christian lady has written a book claiming jesus can cure homosexuality

I'm not getting into the debate of wether there is a God/Jesus etc. It just this has really mad me angry, how can you cure something that is NOT an illness. I find this extremely insulting and judgemental.

TBH I like the very lightly moderated nature of Mumsnet and I would keep the status quo, pretty much. Tightening it up would limit a lot of discussions, and setting standards anywhere other than legal/illegal is a minefield.

But I still think that is Mumsnet's choice and not a free speech issue.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 04/03/2011 10:06

Though that is probably as being neither Gay nor Religious the worst I am usually accused of being is 'a blind believer in authority'.

I wouldn't go that far, swallowed.

But if someone finds that societal norms have evolved away from their beliefs, and that many adherents of their own religion now accept this norm - I would urge serious reconsideration.

There are many things written in scriptures which nowadays are not acceptable. If you believe the bible, Jesus explicitly negated certain aspects of what was laid down in OT laws - for instance 'an eye for an eye'.

People used to commonly believe that the inferiority of women was mandated by the bible. That has been reconsidered and now nearly everyone would refute that.

LadyOfTheManor · 04/03/2011 12:07

For what it's worth I don't believe women should be leaders in churches either.

and to be blunt if you think homosexuality is wrong and abnormal and shouldn't be allowed - tough, too late, this society has taken a different stand.

By "this society" I presume you mean MN (an internet forum) because obviously in real life anyone can speak against anything (and quite rightly so)

It's remarkable that there are so many homosexual apologists.

Rhian82 · 04/03/2011 12:15

But 'in real life' society has taken the stand that homosexuality is allowed, so if you disagree, then tough. You're free to disagree but it's still legal.

'Homosexual apologists' - I can't get my head around someone who would use such a phrase. Quite why people of any faith should be so obsessed with who other people sleep with is bizarre to me. And how anyone can consider themselves a good person while being such a bigot is completely beyond me.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/03/2011 12:15

There's a suprise Grin - but that can be viewed as being about function, you surely don't think women are actually inferior.

It's remarkable that there are so many homosexual apologists.

Is it?

5DollarShake · 04/03/2011 12:22

What exactly is a homosexual apologist?

Oxford dic definition of apologist: 'a person who defends something by argument'.

Its not a derogatory term, though it sounds a bit that way - e.g. C.S. Lewis is referred to as a Christian apologist.

So I assume LOTM means 'people who defend homosexuals by argument'

Can't imagine why they'd be thin on the ground.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 04/03/2011 12:34

It's someone " defending a position (usually religious) through the systematic use of reason. " who is also gay.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 04/03/2011 12:35

HANG ON.

Is LotM calling me a puff?

Homosexual apologists? Women not being leaders in church???

As a Christiam myself, LotM, I was calling YOU and YOUR attitudes narrow-minded some way back up the thread. Don't try to say I'm attacking all Christians.

Jesus is love, and I don't think you have displayed much of it on this thread.

Actually I'm going to follow TCNY's advice - there really is no point in talking to you. You're going to keep being ostentatiously offended, while spouting deeply offensive nonsense. No gays in heaven? Go away.

5DollarShake · 04/03/2011 14:13

I know what an apologist is. Grin

Was just keen for, err, 'Lady' of the Manor to elucidate herself...

supergreenuk · 04/03/2011 15:52

Why oh why are Christians constantly labelled homophobic. We are the last people who are this way. We are tought to love our neighbour. Come on....hug it out. I actually find a massive amount of christianaphobics on mn but I wouldn't label mumsnet with that tag.

chipmonkey · 04/03/2011 16:01

supergreen, probably because there are a lot of homophobic people who use Christianity as an excuse. It's a pity, as it doesn't do the nice, normal Christians any favours.

supergreenuk · 04/03/2011 16:03

Agreed chipmonkey. It doesn't matter what you stand for there will always be someone there to give it/them a bad name.
