To think sleeping without a top sheet is minging?

DP likes to sleep with a sheet covering the mattress (obviously) and then just a duvet on top.

I think this is skanky, esp since DP doesn't wash his duvet cover every week (Hmm) and so it gets really sweaty. I also think it's weird and wrong to not have a sheet above and below you.

Are you sure you're not American? Apparently this is more common in the states.

southeastastra · 20/02/2011 21:00

we had top sheets before duvets

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/02/2011 21:00

OP admit it you have plastic covers on your sofa dont you? Wink

Newgolddream · 20/02/2011 21:00

Could you clarify if your DP has a duvet cover on duvet - because if so then you are most VUB? Who on earth has a sheet below a duvet?
But if hes just got a duvet without a cover...

caughtinanet · 20/02/2011 21:00

Obviously I've heard of a top sheet but only in conjunction with a blanket and bedspread (showing my age now Smile) never with a duvet.

I have a top sheet sometimes!

Usually in the summer so I can hurl the duvet back but still have a cover.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/02/2011 21:04

Stockett · 20/02/2011 21:04

Don't know about minging but very draughty, oooh I do like a top sheet me!

caughtinanet · 20/02/2011 21:08

Yes, ABF what ever happened to candlewick ?

EleanorJosie · 20/02/2011 21:10

I change bed linen when it gets skanky rather than religiously once a week. And get the duvets dry cleaned about once a year. There, I've said it.Smile

BornToFolk · 20/02/2011 21:10

I tried a top sheet once. I bought a set of bedding that included it so I gave it a go. It lasted approx 5 mins before I had to get out of bed, unwrap myself and re-make the bed without it. Fucking annoying.

Engelbert, how are you supposed to air the duvet before making the bed? Does it count if you leave the duvet in a scrumpled heap for a bit?

Catsmamma · 20/02/2011 21:11

Candlewicks are lovely too...I had one from the charity shop for the dog, it was beautiful!

very seventies, white with an orange and yellow starburst on it!

I used it on the guest bed for ages before I gave it to the dog.

AgentZigzag · 20/02/2011 21:11

We used to have goose feather eiderdowns mmmmmm prickly, but made you feel safe under the weight of it Smile

piratecat · 20/02/2011 21:12

yes candlewick,at my nanna's too.

a blanket and nylon sheets!

top sheet was deffo back in the days before duvets. I remember the day we switched to duvets, in our house. It was so so exciting, the quilts came from M&S in a box, must have been 1978 ish. I still have that single duvet on dd's bed. !!

piratecat · 20/02/2011 21:14

i just turn my duvet over completely to air on the bed for a few hours.

FabbyChic · 20/02/2011 21:15

I have never used a top sheet with a duvet. Ever.

Katiekitty · 20/02/2011 21:17

I have lots of candlewick: orange, purple, yellow, yellow with flowers... they're on rotation for snuggling under when I'm watching the telly

(old gimmer)

(curtains always drawn, lest the neighbours should see)

Sarsaparilllla · 20/02/2011 21:19

My nan used to have layers and layers of sheets and bedspreads and god knows what tucked in all really tightly and I still remember now the horror of waking up in the middle of the night, trapped upside down unable to move under it all :o

I have a bedspread over my duvet in the winter when it's cold

Catsmamma · 20/02/2011 21:19

now for another confession...

We have two pillows, one plain one fancy and dh is NOT ALLOWED to sleep on the good pillow

Men make white bedding go a skanky yellow, even if you boil wash!

The3Bears · 20/02/2011 21:19

I just use a flat sheet in summer when its too hot for a duvet I didnt think it was odd to not use one under the duvet, i wash bedding every sunday :)

oopslateagain · 20/02/2011 21:22

I do have a top sheet under my duvet. On the spare bed in the spare room. Then when we have visitors I don't have to bugger about taking the duvet cover off to wash it when it's only been slept in once. Grin
