to question the sanity of those who worship Kurt Cobain/Nirvana?

I must be missing something.

But why is Kurt Cobain such an 'icon'? Why do people think Nirvana are brilliant?

To me, it sounds like depressing nonsense, and I cannot understand what anybody gets from it. And it appears that some people worship Kurt Cobain. What is there about him to worship? From what I can tell, he was a bit rubbish!

But maybe i just don't 'get' it. I have however just been spoken to very rudely by my aunty when I said that the best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl forming the Foo Fighters.

Rammstein are to be forever saluted for America and the penis shaped boat at one of their shows. Bloody love Rammstein Grin

WoTmania · 18/02/2011 16:19

Oh sit down, oh sit down, sit down next to meeeee, sit down, down down down, doowwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnn lalalala Wink

Mirage · 18/02/2011 16:19

Well, that is a revelation. My depression is not caused by a chemical imbalance, but because I have several Smiths albums.Doh!

My cousin said that she wasn't at all surprised that Kurt died young, she reckoned that farm animals sometimes have a 'doomed look' and you know that they aren't going to live very long, and that Kurt had the same look.

DH and I joke that having been brought up listening to The Cure,JAMC,REM,The Pixies,Guns n Roses,Nirvana,The Cult ect,our dds will probably rebel against us by liking bland boy bands and manufactured pop.

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 16:28

ApocalypseCheeseToastie Pulp, and specifically, His N Hers are responsible for my whole life. So I love them too, although a bit resentfully Grin

mozette · 18/02/2011 16:31

PigValentine His 'n' Hers is a FAB album - god I could listen to that on repeat. Pink Glove, on loud, in the car, windows down!

Ormirian · 18/02/2011 16:32

James is brilliant! or was. Don't know the new stuff. Goldmother was good but the earlier albums were better. Stutter is brilliant Anyone else remember Microdisney? DH used to love them - they came to play the student uni in Cardiff once but walked off the stage because people wouldn't stop talking Grin

BachAtTheMoon · 18/02/2011 16:35

Rammstein! Yes!! Sonne here, so loud your ears buzz afterwards!!

Must say though, I enjoyed Nirvana's music but did not idolise Kurt (used to spent break-times with my friend thinking up conspiracy theories involving Dave Grohl and Courtney Love!).

I'd rather that my chidren listen to music that is full of feeling and emotion than run of the mill pop songs that are just basic wank-aids set to music..

mozette · 18/02/2011 16:35

orm is Johnny Yen is on Stutter? Then yes, fab fab album - another song I can play loud and sing along badly too

Ormirian · 18/02/2011 16:38

Erm...don't know. Sorry. Blush

mozette · 18/02/2011 16:38

orm do you have One Man Clapping on CD? Apparently it is mega rare and goes for lots of money on ebay!

Ormirian · 18/02/2011 16:39

God, no! The last albums I have of James are all on vinyl! That's how old I am.

huffythethreadslayer · 18/02/2011 16:41

I lurve Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, though I was a bit old for them really. I can't stick the Foo Fighters. I find them totally derivative and I hate the main guy. The videos are shoite.

I've moved onto the Monkeys now (the Arctic Monkeys that is...not the old Monkee Monkeys...and am definitely too old for them.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 18/02/2011 16:47

I don't think you can claim he STARTED a genre. Mudhoney, Tad etc had all had records out with that kind of Melvins inspired punk sound.

They were the first ones to break big though.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 18/02/2011 16:48

huffy - Dave Grohl is better on other peoples records. Like QOTSA.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 16:51

Not mad keen on the Foos's. They're okay.

Dave Grohl seems like a genuinely likeable bloke though. Definitely very talented and doesn't take himself too seriously.

EdgarAleNPie · 18/02/2011 16:56

love Nirvana, pearl jam, etc.

and QOTSA and radiohead.

comparing rock bands to pop is never going bear fruit. pop was rubbish in the nineties, and is rubbish now. quelle suprise.

although Nirvana reckoned their sound was nothing new it sounded new enough to me..

so KC was not a laudable character. so what.

Nirvanas music has a direct and visceral appeal, speaks very much of that moment i time.

wilfully misinterpreting song titles such as 'rape me' does you no favours. bit's a shame the guy isn't alive to have produced more work, (as in utero is not my favourite) or to explain that now.

lenak · 18/02/2011 16:59

I love the Foo Fighters - I gave birth to the acoustic In Your Honor CD. Literally as I was doing the final pushes, Miracle was playing - both DH and the midwife were in tears.

Only downside was DH wouldn't let me listen to the album for about 18 months afterwards 'cause it set him off crying again.

Bloodymary · 18/02/2011 17:02

Apparently just before Kurt Cobain died, he and Michael Stipe were talking about doing some work together.
Shame it didnt happen Sad

spatchcock · 18/02/2011 17:18

I'm not a big fan of the Foos either, but I saw them live at Reading one year and they were AMAZING. Easily one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Since then have tried to listen to their stuff but can't get into it at all.

LessNarkyPuffin · 18/02/2011 17:21

Mozette- was being tongue in cheek.

The Smiths rule. And Pulp, James, The Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead up to and inc. OK Computer.

Dave Grohl is very talented. He and Kurt Cobain together made something greater than either of them.

mozette · 18/02/2011 17:29

It was more directed to the OP Wink

This thread has reassured me that there are people on Mumsnet with some FABULOUS taste in music

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 18/02/2011 17:40

Radiohead got better after OK Computer.

It goes

In Rainbows
Kid A
Amnesiac
Hail to the Theif
OK Computer
The Bends

Pablo Honey

I haven't heard the new one yet.

LessNarkyPuffin · 18/02/2011 17:47

OMFG. And The Stone Roses. Obviously.

fedupofnamechanging · 18/02/2011 17:47

The first song my son knew all the words to was Karma Police. He was 3. Brings back fond memories, that does.
