I'd wager that Tory voters are more likely to do voluntary work than Labour ones anyway, not least because Lefties see the State as the right and proper deliverer of services to people and don't like it being 'crowded out' by private initiatives.

I suspect labout and conservative volunteer as much as each other. But I do think they volunteer for different things. Environmental, welfare rights and asylum seeker organisations are full of left wing volunteers.

There should be a core of public services and voluntary services should be in addition and not instead of.

I am glad people have spare time to do this voluntary work, the people that I know certainly do not. Are there wealthy people sat out there twiddling their thumbs with nothing to occupy their time? Maybe in leafy Surrey or other such suberbs?

I am a natural Tory voter (though didn't actually vote Tory this time due to local issoos). I work. I also volunteer.

I'm with Purits, would normally vote conservative, but didn't this time. I work, and do loads of voluntry work.

What makes you think that Tory voters aren't already doing their fair share of voluntry work?

There are already a huge number of essential servises that are not being provided by the government. They weren't being paid for by labour either. Services that are a hell of a lot more important than librairies.

The poor are too busy trying to make ends meet and the last thing on their mind is helping at the library when you need to feed and clothe your kids. Nothing about oppression just reality

MsFaithless - interesting idea re reading material. I would imagine Tory literature to include things like Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Sebastian Faulks etc etc. Perhaps an autobigraphy of Branson or Murdoch thrown in here and there.

Labour material would be more along the lines of "Speling is eleetist" or "White, Male and Middle-Class? Why YOU are the root of all evil".

Was really pondering if any reading materials at all would be updated due to funding cuts. That would presumably leave yesterdays copies of the DM & Telegraph (unread, no one who buys this actually seems to read it) kindly passed on by volunteers along with a glut of unwanted Christmas books January...

putting my neck on the line here .. but people that think that David Cameron is the devil incarnate do know that the reason the country is having to suffer all these cuts is to pay back the scaryily deficit run up by the Labour government ... don't they?? I don't suppose he's actually doing it just for fun? And I could provide a whole ream of research and information on what would actually happen to this country (the consequences would be far more calamatious believe me) if the country didn't try to get to grips with it as the government are doing. This is not to say that I agree with all their policies .. but there are valid reasons you know!

I do wish someone would spell it out loud and clear how much the UK is in debt, how much interest we pay on servicing that debt, and what the consequences are of what would happen if these cuts weren't made, so carry on Cazza please.

Totally agree - the country is bankrupt - which bit of this do people not understand ???? We have no money ...... Cuts need to be made, no one likes this but hey shit has happened and we have to fight to get out of the mess.

And yes, I vote Tory, I run a 7 day a week business employ 20 staff, and volunteer loads.

I should retract my comment about Guardian readers and say that only people who ONLY read the Guardian and rely on it to tell them what to think should be deported. I come from a long line of such people and find it unbelievably boring, indeed as boring as a Sun reader telling me it was in "the paper" so must be true. I can't think of a nicer way to spend a Sunday evening (it's a working day here) than relaxing in the garden with the Observer, Independent and Telegraph. However, none of these papers define me, I agree with some of the comment and not with others.
I can't vote because I don't pay tax but even so believe that everyone should do something for their community. Just as important is buying into local shops and pubs which I have done in my home village. I have let my house in England, not because I need the money and believe me it would be far easier to leave it emptier and leave it as a base to visit a couple of times a year. I have done this because I genuinely believe that I, as a householder have a duty to not contribute to the destruction of my ex community even though I have absolutely no intention of ever living in the UK again. I could just sell the damn house at a huge profit and buy somewhere where I wouldn't be stung by endless fusspot taxes. I am quite comfortable with my moral views and agree that people should do more. However, to target a particular group such as tory voters is as ridiculous as saying that chavvy drinker/smokers on benefits should be forced to work for free and run the tea trolley round cancer or gastroenterology wards. In your own way, you sound like a daily Mail reader. I made my choice, you make yours.
