Tar for the cat

Sorry for another cat thread but I found this highly amusing and see it as justice done.

I returned from holiday on Sunday and was accosted by my neighbour who complained that her cats had walked roof bitchumen (tar like stuff) from the roof of my extension (we had it done just before going away) all around her house and had marked carpets and bed linen.

she said I should have informed her the roof had been done. As I have asked her on several occasions to keep her cats off my property I dont see she has a leg to stand on.

Our homes both have extensions and she leaves her rear upper window open for the cats to come and go.

OhFor. why would a vet put a healthy cat to sleep?

Its a speculative question not an statement of intent. If a cat is not owned then anyone can "claim" it

So to summurise, cats have no owners (learnt something tonight). No one is responsible for any cats actions.

Cat "owners" are mostly selfish because they dont care how much of a nuisance "their" cat is to others or the damage/mess they cause because cats cannot be controlled and they are happy to let "their" feline shit machines roam where they will doing what they want.

Newwave Cats do have owners.

There are no laws regarding cats and fouling. A cat holds a unique position in law in that the owner of the cat is not held to be responsible for the consequences of any trespass by the cat. It is an offence to put down poison or set snares for a cat

Cat owners aren't selfish at all - they are homing an animal that is legally allowed to roam free.

The owners don't let or not let the animal defecate - the animal chooses where to do that, it is not possible to make your cat only defecate in a specific place without unduly restricting the animal's freedom to roam.

It is no different, than say, you parking your car legally but in front of your neighbours house and not your own. They might not like it, but you aren't doing anything wrong/illegal.

If you don't like the law do something about it (or move to another country where that holds the same views as you) - in this country it is against the law to maim or kill an animal by throwing bricks at it - something you might like to bear in mind.

I don't like cats urinating under my evergreens out front, but to kill, or hurt one? Never. I put a lot of bark nuggets down as ground cover and they don't seem to urinate there now, it is soil I believe, that they like. My own cat has used my larger plant pots for a litter box, until I added the bark nuggets on top of the soil. I suggest you go buy some some and see if it works, they keep weeds and the need to water down too. I have an indoor cat myself.

Perhaps if you plant some prickly plants around area's that you want to keep cats out of?
As for the tar, that is the neighbors problem. Nobody around here knocks on doors to let cat owners know their driveway has been blackened, or a deck stained.

LaraJade · 15/02/2011 04:05

I remember newwave saying she intended to throw bricks at cats a few months ago.
Yet she clearly hasn't which suggests this thread is just a wind up.

I hope while newwave slept the cat pood in her garden. I had sympathy for you about the cat poo right up until the brick throwing, and the lack of any contrition about that stupid comment. Now I'd like to collect all the cat poo in my neighbourhood and dump it on your lawn.

WoTmania · 15/02/2011 07:27

Maybe I should Tar the tops of all my fences and the surrounds to my raised beds Grin

LaraJade · 15/02/2011 08:17

Anyway bricks wouldn't deter cats - in a cat's eyes bricks do not smell, look or sound like a threat. In fact most cats would think you are playing a (slightly deadly) game - and relish the attention. Even negative attention from humans is still attention in a bored cat's view. Face it newwave - the only way to keep out cats is to get an aggressive tomcat of your own!

woollyideas · 15/02/2011 08:47

Newwave you sound like a nutjob very unreasonable. If you're so against cats coming into your garden why not use lion poo or a water pistol? Why is your first resort a brick? I hope someone reports you to the RSPCA.

How do you feel about foxes, badgers, hedgehogs, etc. Are they allowed to wee and poo in your precious garden? Do you allow greenfly? Or bumble bees? Squirrels?

FFS woman.

WoTmania · 15/02/2011 08:53

I love all these 'why not use Lion poo' comments. Like it's the easiest thing in the world to get hold of. Just pop into your local sainsburys.

woollyideas · 15/02/2011 09:09

Most garden centre pet stores sell lion poo. It's in pelletted form, by the way - not steaming piles of the real thing, freshly shovelled from your local zoo.

I've used it and found it very effective.

But a water pistol would also scare cats off and wouldn't hurt the animal/risk the wrath of the RSPCA with frankly the OP deserves.

CalamityKate · 15/02/2011 09:15

Bricks?!

Nice.

whysolate · 15/02/2011 09:25

Loose cannon alert!!!!

namechange100 · 15/02/2011 09:40

I dont see how she can complain about the mess as surely this is one of the perils of having cats and to some extent dogs as they dont wear shoes to take off when returning from a walk.

If she had known would she have kept the cats inside completely for a day or two (I dont know how long that studd takes to dry?)

I dont think her cats behaviour is your responsibility. Ideally it would have been neighbourly to let her know.

However animal curelty is a punishable offence and I wonder what she would do if she caught throwing a brick - be careful you might get caught on CCTV like that wheelie bin women did.

Ormirian · 15/02/2011 13:03

She's mad for whingeing at you about it but may I just say if you chuck a brick at my cat and hurt it, I'd chuck one through your frigging extension window.

BaggedandTagged · 15/02/2011 13:05

I bet the cat did it on purpose- saw the roof getting tarred and thought "Excellent. A new way to torture my owner"
