to ask how you have your steak?

I went out for supper with friends, and the Mrs friend ordered her steak "super well done, without an inch of blood or redness", Mr Friend ordered it "blue, just a flash in the pan". I ordered it "medium rare".

How do you eat your steak? I can't understand why you would order it well done...?

In fact stick it in a tutu, I can floss at the same time.

Can I come round for dinner?

CilantroLarry · 10/02/2011 22:30

I'm enjoying his limbs. He deserves to see he isn't dying in vain.

piprabbit · 10/02/2011 22:30

Cilantro, you eat the head first to put them out of their misery as quickly as possible. Imagine the horror of being slowly consumed from the feet up Shock.

LadyOfTheManor · 10/02/2011 22:30

cilantro obviously you eat the legs first, you want the gingerbread man to SEE how he's being tortured.

I have never attempted steak tartare.

I would only ever eat it in France, as you can trust it would be more popular there, and therefore better prepared/fresh.

CilantroLarry · 10/02/2011 22:31

It's arms first acksherley. Left one first to be precise.

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/02/2011 22:32

I meant I have never attempted to cook (not that you cook it) steak tartare at home.

huddspur · 10/02/2011 22:32

I like it well done. I think there's a bit of a north-south divide though.

HelenBa · 10/02/2011 22:35

rare to medium rare (depending on quality) but rested so there's no blood - it makes everything else go soggy which is horrid

vintageteacups · 10/02/2011 22:37

I am not normally a food snob however, I do think the french cook steak better than over here (I'm not french!).

Whenever I've had steak over here, even in really good restaurants, it still never tastes as it does in Paris Wink.

So in France, I'd have rare but here, medium rare/medium

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/02/2011 22:39

I agree Vintage - nothing ever compares to the steaks i have had in France.

vintageteacups · 10/02/2011 22:41

I wonder why that is?

vintageteacups · 10/02/2011 22:42

Even their average steak and fries in a little beach cafe tastes divine!

Tigerbomb · 10/02/2011 22:43

I love steak. Just threaten it with an unlightened match and that's good enough for me

I like to have it with a large spinach salad that has had a dribble of balsamic vinegar and olive oil poured over it.

mmmmmmmmmm

The French are big on letting it hang for years longer than us. Especially with the shite in Tesco which is so readily available

I think its how the lovely cows are raised and subsequently treated - the very best steak i have EVER bought was from a farm shop in the Lake District who raise and slaughter their cattle on site and sell in the shop - doesnt matter how you cook the meat it still tastes sublime and thats from my whole family who have it cook several different ways.

It is so good that every year when we go for our annual holiday we all buy enough to pop in the freezer to last us all year - a red letter day indeed if its a Lakes steak night Smile

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/02/2011 22:54

I don't know why it is better - it just tastes far better than anytning you would get in this country I find.

kaid100 · 10/02/2011 23:07

Medium Rare, which my vegetarian BIL says is the most boring. DW has well done, she can't stand any redness at all.

LadyOfTheManor · 10/02/2011 23:23

It's not so much the leathery texture I hate so much on a well done steak, it's the lack of flavour and the eternity to chew it. I barely chew my food, I tend to inhale it...which is restricted if it's cooked too much.

I used to have mine very very well done (BTF as one restaurant called it).

Then I tasted medium rare and have never looked back.

LadyOfTheManor · 10/02/2011 23:43

I might start a bus like Jamie Oliver does and go around with medium/rare steaks and force invite people to try it and see if I can get them onto the dark side.

I just KNEW that MNers would generally like a good rare steak.

Just like you would all probably eat decent (non plastic) cheese, proper bread (except for retro/kid purposes), stonking wines, a decent malt whisky and nice ham (of course). And serve up a lovely plate of delicious tapas or antipasti to visitors.

I bet the Nethuns eat mild cheddar, plastic ham, Blossom Hill, lambrinis, sliced white and offer up a bowl of Quavers or Skips. And think they're being adventurous if they go for a medium rump in a Berni Inn of a Saturday night.

LadyOfTheManor · 11/02/2011 00:00

Well well, how stereotypical.

Although from your description I'm glad I'm a MNetter and not a NetMummser.
