To let my child eat fast food!

My daugter has a party this week and the mother has decided to get all the kids there amcdonalds happy meal.

All the other mums have agreed.

My daugter is just about to turn 2 and i think this is just unacceptable food fo a child that ytoung.

I wont let her be having it.

I dont feel like im being unreasonable.

Would you let yours? Even if it is just a one off?

OP, I used to be you.

My DC's would eat my lovingly prepared nutritious cooked from scratch meals. I judged massively other mothers for letting their precious angels eat crap.

And then, they went to secondary school........

DS now lives on Pizza and Irn Bru
DD now lives on fags Greggs

You said earlier that you were worried about the salt content.

Then someone pointed out the menu options up the thread, and pointed out that one Happy Meal would be 26-27% of your daughter's RDA for salt. And a similar amount for fat.

So does that make you happier now?

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 10/02/2011 18:14

I would love to know exactly what some people think is in McDs food?!?!

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 10/02/2011 18:17

I am weaning my PFB on blended cheeseburgers, AIBU?

thunderbird69 · 10/02/2011 18:20

It's not just what is in the food, but the whole fast food culture and Mcd's in particular that I find unpleasant.

AgentZigzag · 10/02/2011 18:27

Not if you're putting ketchup in it too allsquare, they have to have their fruit Wink

weefriend · 10/02/2011 18:29

Casserole I think some people have just decided that they are salty and fatty and unhealthy and don't actually care about the facts. No it's probably not the healthiest food out there but it really isn't that bad. As I pointed out before a Happy Meal is about a quarter of the daily guideline daily amount for salt and actually much less for the fat. I'd love to see how that compares to the normal meals the child eats. Children do actually need salt and fat in their diet...

BuzzLiteBeer · 10/02/2011 18:34

do none of you remember kids parties in the 70's and 80's? fucking hell mcdonalds would have been a damn sight better than the shite we ploughed into.

OP I can't imagine caring as much about one meal. Take the stick out of your arse and get a grip.

Bubblerapped · 10/02/2011 18:42

Unless you go to a carvery, or a family run restaurant, any other place you eat out is "fast food".

The vast majority of it is pre-cooked, with additives to preserve its' fridge life, and in most cases probably less nutritious than a cheeseburger from mcdonalds.

To all those who turn their noses up at McDonalds I suggest you look on their website and check out the nutrition facts.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 10/02/2011 18:46

Ah, there IS ketchup in it, but I do take the pickle out :)

That's exactly it, people assume its shit because they are under the impression that all fast food will kill you. McDonalds have spent A LOT of money improving their menu over the past 10 or so years, and for a few years I practically lived on it (3 meals a day, 6 days a week - don't ask, lol).

But hey ho, if you want to be a paranoid freak that's your prerogative.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 10/02/2011 18:49

PS, the shit they serve in JWs is a lot worse than the food in McDs. And requires a lot less skill to cook.
And that's saying something!!

Gargula · 10/02/2011 18:51

I'm pretty surprised at the level of abuse and scorn aimed at OP.
I have never taken my DS (3)(or my 10 month old DD come to that) to a McD's, mostly because we don't eat meat or fish so there's not much option for us. Does this mean I'm a freak, nutter, my child is destined to be a social outcast and have eating disorders?
Is this the kind of scorn that I'm going to be subjected to by other parents for choosing to be vegetarian?

Bogeyface · 10/02/2011 18:53

Children do actually need salt and fat in their diet...

I think it was posted on here a while back about children suffering from malnutrition because they werent eating enough fat? I am sure there was a thread about it but I cant find it!

It centred around an article where a mother was so careful that her dd only ate what she classed as a healthy diet ie limited carbs, and fruit veg and meat with as little fat as possible. She ended up on a special diet as she was ill and lethargic etc due to the lack of fat in her diet.

Bogeyface · 10/02/2011 18:54

Gargula....WTF?!

That is so far from the point being made that I am not sure you are reading the right thread! :o

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 10/02/2011 18:55

Gargula , I am vegetarian, that would have been a valid arguement IMO. Though McDs do serve vegatarian food.

However the OP was going on about it being unhealthy as if it were poison. Which it isn't, it's not even that unhealthy.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 10/02/2011 18:57

Need to pay more attention to my typing and less to my DS methinks!!

Lucky it wasn't vagetarion though Grin

Bogeyface I just had pizza. Bought from a shop, not homemade. And my DS had some of my garlic bread.

Hullygully · 10/02/2011 18:58

They won't mind if you send her with her own food. Why not make up a couple of other discreet little baggies in case other kids pprefer not to despoil their innards with the devil's own filth?

toeragsnotriches · 10/02/2011 18:59

It's a party. YABU.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 10/02/2011 18:59

Hullygully · 10/02/2011 19:04

Anyone who says Cheeky Mare should be taken out and shot.

Chaotica · 10/02/2011 19:06

I'd have been on your side, OP. (But my children are veggies.) If she eats meat/fish already, I'd let her for one occasion.
