I mean it's so clearly such a great stinking heap of horse shit, how can anyone actually believe it?
Another mum at playgroup today was telling me what kind of personality my 9 month old will have based solely on her star sign.
All pleasant enough stuff but she actually believed it.
What's wrong with people?

Yep, moon in capricorn - in opposition to my sun, as it goes. So you say anybody with Capricorn wouldn't have anything to do with it? That's interesting - what's the explanation? Are you saying there are no astrologers with strong Capricornian aspects in their charts? How many would it take to disprove your theory?

Lamorna · 02/02/2011 16:56

I never said I was an astrologer-I was merely answering OP -I think it should be rubbish, but it works to my satisfaction. I discovered this 15yrs ago. I might take it up some day, I haven't the time. I don't live my life by astrology-I never give it a thought in day to day life but I think that it gives a very accurate reading of character.

UntamedShrew · 02/02/2011 16:57

Can't really tell with babies? They are now nearly 2 and able to speak for themselves and it reinforces what I always knew. They are very different. One boy walks around with baby dolls, scares easily and is very sensitive to others' moods. The other boy likes to hit things, throw things and make loud noises and has been known to bite.

One was born 10.20 and 10.21 in the morning.

That would be a very quick change of cusp, no?

I don't mean this to sound as confrontational as it looks on screen by the way - genuinely interested to know your point of view :)

UntamedShrew · 02/02/2011 16:59

HullyGully yes please do a handstand and post a photo.

I am a libra, it means I take people up on all sorts of silly offers maybe?

Hullygully · 02/02/2011 17:00

For Untamed

Lamorna · 02/02/2011 17:00

I have never met an astrologer with a much Capricorn-you find me one and it will disprove it, but I doubt you will.
I have never met a Capricorn who wouldn't say it was rubbish, it is a common sense earth sign, they need to see it to believe it.
Do you know for a fact that you have a Capricorn moon? You must have taken a bit of interest at some point to know that!

Lamorna · 02/02/2011 17:02

I find it interesting Untamedshrew-unfortunately must start cooking a meal, I will get back to you.

PlentyOfParsnips · 02/02/2011 17:04

Yes, I did my chart years ago. Also used to do tarot, crystal 'healing', 'psychic' readings and all sorts of other hokum, but I'm better now Grin

GORGEOUSX · 02/02/2011 17:09

YANBU - Utter Tosh and Codswallop - not unlike religion.

"If you're 23/24 etc I would suspect that at some point you have engineered your own fertility/contraception through the pill etc. etc."
Penelope No I've never taken the pill for more than a few months at a time. I've tried it about 3 times and had to give up for various reasons - and it made me even more mardy than normal. I prefer LeQueen's MIL's explanation.

I do think it is rubbish and that it's irrational to believe in this stuff, too, just like religion.

I have not read the whole thread, but somebody said above that astrology is harmless. My parents come from a culture (Hindu), where astrology is taken extremely seriously. Arranged marriages can be determined by astrological compatibility. It's frightening.

My own crazy mother used my star sign as a rod to beat me with growing up, consistently using astrology as a weapon (eg, if I asked her to stop shouting) and labelling me with the "qualities" of my sign, which aren't particularly flattering. It's damning to be told you are critical, fussy, boring, graceless etc etc day in day out for no good reason other than she could and knew it would shut me up.

I started to believe it and it took me a long time to realise I was a lot of things and not simply a set of generic attributes that magically flew into me the minute I was born. She did this to my siblings too. Certainly, 2 of us will not even talk about our own children's star signs, we don't want them labelled like we were.

That's a rather rambling way of me saying that any belief, taken to extremes, can be dangerous, even something as seemingly innocuous as astrology. And imagine you are in a culture where you are not allowed by your family to marry the person you love because they don't think you are compatible.

reluctanthomosapien · 02/02/2011 17:30

Sorry, that last bit should have said "compatible astrologically".

MardyBra · 02/02/2011 17:49

Thought-provoking post reluctant.

MillyR · 02/02/2011 17:53

My face hurts from laughing about Lequeen's MIL saying the astronauts did not land on a full moon.

OP, you do realise that people born on the Sabbath day really are bonny, blythe, merry and gay, don't you?

BalloonSlayer · 02/02/2011 17:56

balloon!

of course I don't mind! And deeply flattered at you calling me a well-known poster Smile

I was puzzled the other day when I saw someone saying "Balloon, I couldn't agree more" and I thought "Huh? I didn't post on this thread!" Then I scrolled back and saw you. Grin

balloonballs · 02/02/2011 18:05

Thanks, I like my new name!

poshsinglemum · 02/02/2011 18:20

YANBU; along with palm reading, reiki, christal healing, etc, etc.

edam · 02/02/2011 18:25

Um, I don't hold any particular brief on astrology, but afraid it is plain wrong to say there is no evidence for acupuncture. It is recommended in the NICE guidelines for low back pain. And there is clear evidence from MRI scans that acupuncture does have an effect on the pain mechanisms of the brain.

Even if it was only a placebo effect, that's fine if it helps people feel better. That's how much of conventional healthcare works anyway - people visit the doctor, feel someone has listened and go away slightly happier. Even if they are clutching a scrip for something that is no better than placebo.

(As a rough rule of thumb, when a new drug is released there are tons of studies saying how zippy it is. A decade later, there are loads of studies saying it is no better than placebo. Partly due to publication bias but there are other factors.)

GORGEOUSX · 02/02/2011 19:09

Reluctant that's so sad - and I've learnt something new - didn't know that about Hindus. Did you have to marry someone who was "astrologically compatible" to you?

balloonballs · 02/02/2011 19:12

Had acupuncture been mentioned? I'm happy to keep it in the non woo category anyway.

Lamorna · 02/02/2011 19:15

'I was a gymnast 30 years ago. Would anyone like me to nearly do a handstand for them?

I expect that you could do a better one than me,I never could do one. I haven't set myself up as an astrologer, just that more people use it than you would think and that it works for my satisfaction, nothing more.
Labelling children is madness. I just think it is interesting.
I have had a look at the twins UntamedShrew and one minute is so close that there is really no difference. All I can say (and the scoffers will say it is a complete cop out, but I have my tin hat on) is that one boy is using the Aries sun, and he is the noisy brave one, and the other is using his Pisces moon and his Cancer ascendant (both water signs)and is softer and more timid. The scoffers should be pleased as it shows that you are not just at the mercy of destiny. (all have a field day now and ridicule to your heart's content Grin)

GrimmaTheNome · 02/02/2011 19:18

Lamorna, it spoils the fun entirely if you admit its a cop out Grin
