to think that Off The Beaten Track was a mistake

this isn't a thread about a thread, it's a thread about a topic, and some of the threads in it

so hopefully not bad form

I think it was amistake - it seems to be used for all the wrong reasons. For example the shiney crew feeling they ought to post on there because people were complaining about them being a clique - that seems wrong to me, MN is public and nobody should feel they have to retire to a private area. And the BoM thread which is full of personal attacks and insults - people seem to retire onto that thread to make the sort of remarks they wouldn't make on the main boards

I think it should be got rid of. What does everyone else think?

It's not just the shiney and BoM threads in there. There are other ongoing chat group threads in there too. They're certainly not about bitching.

penelopestitsdropped · 28/01/2011 20:32

do you think so? i thought that it was just the name of the person that first started the thread and so the second thread was a continuation and so on and so forth. the "shiney" was kept to identify that thread as their own.

like i say, no different to the "lighter" or "wise and avid" or "lissies tea room" when we had it.

maybe i am missing the point.

southeastastra · 28/01/2011 20:33

i don't like the fact that some of the threads on there are sort of bitchy 'ooh look aren't i witty i started this trolling thread' type thing

er yes we all know now. Hmm

was probably good in theory

TrillianAstra · 28/01/2011 20:33

Facebook is shit for long multi-person conversations.

southeastastra · 28/01/2011 20:34

msn is good for that surely

anyway people can posts what they like i don't care - but don't be a two faced arse about it

penelopestitsdropped · 28/01/2011 20:35

damsel - the BoM thread is awful.

It is literally ALL about out and out bitching. they even name change to parody other posters.

then go and call upon each other to go wade into arguments.
(which i am fairly sure i have seen the shiney lot accused of)

i only skimmed the thread but i was shocked at just how full of bile they are about the main boards. There were a lot of acronyms that i didn't understand though.

missalien · 28/01/2011 20:35

Havent a bloody clue what you lot are talking about. I thought shineys were some prize from the tweenies .

Shall we have a bitch about M Royalty again then?

I don't see what the problem is with OTBT. If you don't want to use it, don't use it.

GypsyMoth · 28/01/2011 20:38

i still don't know what BOM stands for.....i get its bitchy,is that the 'B'????

BitOfFun · 28/01/2011 20:39

I haven't got msn. Too complicated for me.

OTBT feels safer for some people to discuss personal stuff, that's all. It is possible for others to view it, but it won't get casually clicked on as it might in Chat.

BitOfFun · 28/01/2011 20:40

But the BoM thread sounds fascinating now...

bibbitybobbityhat · 28/01/2011 20:41

Gosh! just glanced at BOM thread. No, its not nice. But that doesn't mean otbt was a mistake.

Get on the thread and report it or object to it in person if it bothers you a great deal. Personally I am not going to bother reading it in detail because if you are reduced to starting a thread in which your major preoccupation is bitching about your fellow forum users, in the hope that you are somehow doing it in private, is beyond pathetic and can just be dismissed as extreme stupidity and silliness.

Imo.

Gleekfreak · 28/01/2011 20:41

From what I understand, though am a newbie so still learning, a BoM is a Bonus Mum, ie a step mum-apparently a disliked term with connotations of Cinderella etc ;)

penelopestitsdropped · 28/01/2011 20:41

bitches of mumsnet??

I have no idea. there are a lot of "sp" "bd" "bs" on there that i have no idea what they mean.

traceybath · 28/01/2011 20:41

Hands up how many people now scanning the BOM thread Wink

TrillianAstra · 28/01/2011 20:43

I will be in a sec!

penelopestitsdropped · 28/01/2011 20:44

bibbity - agree. I only skimmed it but was stunned at how angry they seem.

I think maybe they are under the misunderstanding that OTBT is somehow secret and taht the main boards do not have access to it? i can;t understand how they thought they would get away with being so nasty without being noticed

HecateQueenOfWitches · 28/01/2011 20:44

So... people post on a totally accessible area of mumsnet as though it was a private area and nobody can read what they are saying on a thread? because you can't google it?

But everyone who is a member of mumsnet can read it.

But they're bitching about other mumsnetters?

Well that's very stupid, isn't it?

But I supposed it's a calculated risk, since most mners don't seem to use it or indeed know it's there.

penelopestitsdropped · 28/01/2011 20:45

that seems to sum it up nicely Hec Grin

GypsyMoth · 28/01/2011 20:46

i did tracey!!!

think its what penelope said..

LadyTremaine · 28/01/2011 20:47

Oh for god sake, just don't look!!!!

I have needed to vent n the 'company' of people in a similar predicament to myself and when i have done so been judged by people who have no concept of my predicament and so it's good for venting with likemindd people. What's your problem?

bibbitybobbityhat · 28/01/2011 20:47

Its quite funny in a way. I guess its all going to go mad in a minute.

Perhaps op should have just said "AIBU to think the BOM thread on OTBT is dreadful?" and we could have cut out all this shillyshallying around.
