children standing up in trolleys in supermarkets.....

just wondered how other people felt when they see a women pushing a trolley around a supermarket with their sprog standing in the trolley? my point is that i would never have allowed my dd to do that as that is where you/other people put your food (there could be dogs muck on their shoe). have seen this more and more lately. i can understand the odd situation that might require this ie ill child too tired to walk or something tragic like that but the kids i have seen look fine (if not a little spoilt) to me

TBH if your dc sits in the trolley they can't do as much this

DanceInTheDark · 17/01/2011 20:47

chippingin I often do shop online but i don't buy fresh stuff there any more (fruit/veg/meat) because i got fed up of it being almost off or the meat being obviously full of water Hmm. Strict budget = strict shopping rules!

TBH DH is usually there as well - I don't drive but it's like having another child HmmGrin

MsKLo · 17/01/2011 20:51

ooooops! i let mine do this and havent given it a moment's though! Confused

tazmosis · 17/01/2011 21:05

But shopping trolleys are stored outside...they're not exactly sterile to start with.

I sometimes let DD sit in the trolley if the supermarket is really busy or if she is tired. I care not a jot what anyone else thinks about it. They would be far more upset if I made her walk. DD is a fiend when tired. Could be worse. My DM used to let me ride on the front of the trolley and DB and I used to fight over it.
I even got taken home drunk in one on my 18th Blush

Habbibu · 17/01/2011 21:38

"surely the mother would rather do her shopping in peace while the dad took the kids to do something that they might actually find interesting."

Why doesn't the mother get to go and do something she might find interesting? I know trhis was ages ago upthread, but it's irked me.

Only read first page.

I'm with the you have a nice life if this is the biggest thing to bother you brigade.

My boys do this (3 and 4). Not often as usually the trolley is too full. Ds2 did it this pm in fact!

Food is packaged or there are bags to put the fresh stuff in so the hygeine thing is a total non issue in my book.

Yes its probably not as safe as sitting in the seat but I make a judgement that they are sensible enough not to lurch about and they know that if they do they will have to go in the seat or walk.

And for sure they are old enough to walk. But they like doing this, its fun, and I'm not about to stop for any of the (non - imho) reasons on the first page of this thread.

ivykaty44 · 17/01/2011 22:08

Alicet - you need to go back and read the thread and see my posts Sad otherwise I will be sad

Changeisagoodthing · 17/01/2011 22:13

I used to work for a major supermarket and check the accidents nationally. I saw the injury pictures when children had fallen standing in trolleys.

Please please don't ever let your choked do it.children were racially scarred for life even after surgery, they had fingers amputated etc

Changeisagoodthing · 17/01/2011 22:14

Whoops. They were facially scarred.

Choked is child!

Changeisagoodthing · 17/01/2011 22:24

The most common accident was to have teeth knocked out ( sometimes final teeth). They fell forward and hit the handle sometimes when the trolley ran into something.

I have also seen where teeth have come through the lips and skin (horrible scarring even after surgery).

I child who fell on something in the trolley that went through the soft palate- a mop I think but can't remember.

Lots and lots of amputated finger tips. Accidents where a child sitting in a trolley stuck there fingers out through the sides and they caoughtbon something or they grabbed another trolley- broken fingers.

Lots of broken legs and collar bones from accidents.

Some idiots not only sit their children in trolleys but then let another child push it.

I also witnessed a horrific trolley accident in another store. Again child standing in trolley- fell and smashed out teeth on the metal. Blood everywhere and the skin very cut.

mommmmyof2 · 17/01/2011 22:28

I have read through a few of these posts, some have made me laugh but some have valid points. It is easy to put your child in the trolly sometimes (sitting down) than having to watch their every move in a busy supermarket.Especially when it is just you and 2 or 3 children with you.
Some children have problems that you would not no just by looking at them.
I agree it can be dangerouse though and there have been times I have done this with my dc but as soon as they stood up in the trolley they were out!
But only for safety reasons, the poo thing really did make me laugh as why on earth would a mother just ignore the fact her child has poo on their shoe, being in a shopping trolley or not Hmm
So really speaking you cannot be that annoyed as the child is not your responsibilty so no need to worry about safety, and also I doubt any mom would put their own shopping in a trolley with poo lmao

rupert1 · 17/01/2011 22:32

Its just horrible unhygenic and dog poo is the obvious danger here especially on things you dont wash ie corn flake box etc.luckily the type that put their children in food compartment is very few,not much you can do about Rif raf.

mommmmyof2 · 17/01/2011 22:35

yes dog poo is disgusting and unhygenic but I cannot see why a mother would ignore it and put them in a trolley anyway, it just amused me a little.

ramblingmum · 17/01/2011 22:36

I do not let dds stand in the trolley when we are going round. But dd1 likes to help unpack the trolley at the till so she stands in then. When I was pregnant with dd2 I had to let her do this as I coudnt reach the bottom of the trolley ( short with big bump)

hmc · 17/01/2011 22:39

Do you mean riff raff?

hmc · 17/01/2011 22:41

I don't generally pick people up on spelling (bad form), but I made an exception for you Wink

SycamoretreeIsVile · 17/01/2011 22:50

Really? You are worried about a child's feet mucking up a trolley when trolleys are left outside in the rain all day and night with birds shitting on them, ill people coughing on them, rainwater spattering them, cars chucking up their spray on them, dust blowing on them from the street, insects dying in them, spillages that are "more or less' cleaned up festering in the nooks and crannies the Saturday kid couldn't be arsed to wash properly.

Do you really imagine, but for the dirty feed of my DC's your trolley is some kind of sterile environment fit to cleanly house your groceries?

Methinks you are deluded.

The safety issue is something else. But that's a decision for each parent to make, based on age and responsibility of child.

PussinJimmyChoos · 17/01/2011 22:57

I put DS in the trolley and make him sit down for safety as it is too unstable for him to stand. I have tried the walking around the supermarket with him but am 7.5mths pg and trying to hold his hand and steer a trolley full of shopping is a nightmare

Also, I am profoundly deaf and while other parents can rely on still hearing their children chatter away as they walk to the middle of the aisle, to the end of it or even hear them shout mum if they accidentally wandered to the next aisle, I don't have this luxury so I'd rather be over cautious and have him in the trolley

I have tried the wrist strap but it just kept getting tangled up with the trolley!

kelway · 18/01/2011 08:36

idiots, people OFTEN ten dog shit on the underside of their shoe/tread in spit and don't realise (until in an enclosed space and then smell it). i still stand by my view that i don't like kids standing in food trolleys unless they have genuine reasons that i have read alot of above, fair enough, but some of the mothers here have what i consider to be lame excuses, i bet they are the ones who insist you take your shoes off when you go to their houses, double standards

WHo are you calling an idiot?

Just because their opinion is different doesn't mean it is wrong.

This thread is crying out for a link to the cube of poo thread but i can't find it:(
