children standing up in trolleys in supermarkets.....

just wondered how other people felt when they see a women pushing a trolley around a supermarket with their sprog standing in the trolley? my point is that i would never have allowed my dd to do that as that is where you/other people put your food (there could be dogs muck on their shoe). have seen this more and more lately. i can understand the odd situation that might require this ie ill child too tired to walk or something tragic like that but the kids i have seen look fine (if not a little spoilt) to me

kelway do you really think your shopping trolley would otherwise be "clean", apart from the soiling caused by the odd kid standing in them?

I've never seen a trolley being cleaned, I've never seen a supermarket with a steam bath for the trolleys etc. I doubt they are ever cleaned in their life, unless they were really visibly & obviously dirty.

ivykaty44 · 17/01/2011 16:18

I wouldn't want to put my food in this trolley

ivykaty44 · 17/01/2011 16:21

see I said it would look silly

Figgyrolls · 17/01/2011 16:28

Well sometimes it is the only way.

Incidentally I just wonder why dc's shoes in the trolley (where the food is usually immensely over packaged, there is usually something spilled and stickly, stuuuuudents use them when pissed as cars Hmm and there are usually creatures that have crawled or flown near them) is comparable to being asked to take your shoes off in someone's home Confused, I would be more worried about what dd would catch from the trolley than from what she would leave behind.

duchesse · 17/01/2011 16:36

I have probably the wriggliest and tiniest 16 mo in the world, and she can wriggle out of the straps on the seat on the tightest setting in a second and stand up in the seat, meaning that I cannot do any shopping at all as I have to watch her all the time to stop her from falling 1 metre onto the ground. The only way to keep her corralled is to pop her in the body of the trolley where she "helps" sort out the shopping for me. I feel it's the lesser of two evils. It's not ideal even for me as she tends to disappear if I have to do a big shop, and attempts to crush everything crushable while she's riding with it. It's still better than brain damage from a fall onto concrete.

Ecoworriermummy · 17/01/2011 16:40

My son's 2 1/2 and I do this. Its the only way I can get all my shopping and not have to run around shouting after him! I would never put him in the small trolleys though!

It doesnt bother me and I couldnt care less if it bothered anyone else. It keeps me saine with one less thing to worry about! Ds screams and kicks his legs around if hes put near the seats Confused and its not as if hes asking to be put in the trolley because he quite often does the same when I try and put him in there but its much easier for me to get him in and he soon clams down!
I know birds fly over the trolleys because Ive had to trawl through trollies to get one that hasnt got mess on it! And you'd be suprised where rats can get to! I once watched a rat (a big one) crawl along a wire the size of a telephone wire onto someones roof! (Ewww!)
Why not take reuseable bags, place them in the trollies fill them up and then transfer to the till and back to the bag?

MrsTumbles · 17/01/2011 16:40

Oh no, just come back from Sainsbo's and read this! My DD (2.4) is really well behaved and will hold my hand happily going round the supermarket. Unfortunately some knob heads people are so wrapped up in their own little worlds they don't notice little people like my DD and I have lost count of the number of times she is in tears because someone has barged into her and knocked her over.

Even if I hold her hand I can't have my eyes on her at all times. If she stands/sits in the trolley I have one hand on her all the time and she is quiet and still, she won't sit in the seat, and I get more 'tuts' off people if she is screaming her head off for the whole shop than I ever have if she is stood in the trolley.

Seriously if it?s a hygiene issue, just think of all the people who go to the loo and then handle the fresh bread/veg without washing their hands Shock

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 17/01/2011 16:42

I let my kids in the trolley but they have to sit on their bum
as soon as they dont stay on their bum they are OUT and not back in

TheVisitor · 17/01/2011 16:42

I'd rather see a kid standing in a trolley than listen to them screeching their head off.

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 17/01/2011 16:43

yes I agree its not a hygeine issue but fdefinietly a safety issue, I'm aware of people looking at me and not agreeing with it but I feel if they are sitting they are safe and |I'm ok with that

they each only had one maybe two tantrums when small about being taken out when they dont stay sitting but them they got it

makes the shopping quicker too

they dont do it all the time though just occasionally when tired

Figgyrolls · 17/01/2011 16:44

Mrs Tumbles, I have just been a little bit sick in my mouth. That image ain't going anywhere quickly Grin

Figgyrolls · 17/01/2011 16:46

Ooh, Hi trinity! Hope its all going well for you at the mo and you had nice xmas and new year.

Will stop hijacking and go back to nodding and shrugging with thread about standing trolleys....

Swedes1 · 17/01/2011 16:49

I only do it while they're eating grapes.

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 17/01/2011 16:49

Figgyrolls · 17/01/2011 16:51

Actually no might about it! Grin Smile Grin

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 17/01/2011 16:51

lol swedes is that whilst you're in the disabled space and buying everything nestle make?

2shoes · 17/01/2011 16:52

I used to care about this, I got over the hygene issues on about thread number 2.
I still think it is dangerous, but as it isn't my child I now don't care.

SantosLHalper · 17/01/2011 16:52

I do it when supermarket is busy or dd is knackered. I am fairly sure people who are worried about it should get a grip!

MrsTumbles · 17/01/2011 17:07

Oh dear, sorry Figgyrolls didn't mean to make you sick! Just be thankful you haven't seen the training video I had to watch when I worked for a bank, it was enough to stop me wanting to use cash ever again! People can be disgusting.

I was just trying to get the point across that lots of disgusting things could touch our food before its even had chance to be contaminated by something on a Childs shoe!

usualsuspect · 17/01/2011 17:12

I couldn't care less ...anything that makes a mums life easier while shopping is fine by me

DeidreBarlow · 17/01/2011 17:13

I do it all time if I am just getting a few bits. If its a big shop then DS (2.2) sits in the seat, which he can get out of, even if strapped inHmm

I was once told off by a lady in Tesco for putting him in the body of the trolley. I stood next to her while she stacked her shelves for 5 minutes trying to wrestle DS into the seat while he screamed loud enough to shatter glass. I then popped him back into the body of the trolley where he promtly shut up and I carried on my way. You could say I should have perservered and put him in the seat. But I only needed a few bits and its preferable to him screaming all the way round the shop.

Also considering the amount of trolleys taht have discarded tissues/wrappers/crap in them anyway I don't think hygiene is really an issue.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 17/01/2011 17:15

DS2 is 3 and v healthy, but has ASD and its the only way we can get round without him running away from me. He wont fit in the seat part any more.

I would only be shopping with him for emergency items/small qty of items... if I need a big shop then I wait till I can leave him at home or have it delivered.

I age visibly whenever I have to take him shopping Shock not tantrums or any such like, just his sheer determination to pelt off through any available door/ turnstile/gap in the time-space continuum Wink

SlightlyJaded · 17/01/2011 17:17

If I can find a 2 seated trolley without having to remove ten million ones in front if it, we tend to use this.

If I can't, then DD goes in the seat and DS sits in the trolley bit.

Otherwise they would either:

a) Get barged / knocked over by people wearing 'see-no-child spectacles' - there are lots of these where we shop

b) Get scowled at for running down aisles. There are only SO MANY TIMES you can say 'stop running' before your brain actually implodes

c) Sneak Fruit Shoots and Sausage Rolls into the trolley

We once actually accidently bought a whole £10 Barbie Birthday Cake for no reason other than it had been snuck in. By the time we got to pay and pack, I was so mind numbingly desperate to leave, I didn't even notice. DCs would have high fived if they were old enough.

Figgyrolls · 17/01/2011 17:17

mrstumbles you're alright - still feel queasy about peanuts on a bar tbh so just constantly blank what revolting things could happen - on a sliding scale feet in the trolley is about a 1 so nothing to worry about Grin

preghead · 17/01/2011 17:33

I have no issue with it, given that everything you can buy in a supermarket comes wrapped in several layers of cellophane, cardboard, plastic bags and other unecessary wrapping.
