children standing up in trolleys in supermarkets.....

just wondered how other people felt when they see a women pushing a trolley around a supermarket with their sprog standing in the trolley? my point is that i would never have allowed my dd to do that as that is where you/other people put your food (there could be dogs muck on their shoe). have seen this more and more lately. i can understand the odd situation that might require this ie ill child too tired to walk or something tragic like that but the kids i have seen look fine (if not a little spoilt) to me

Hmm
macdoodle · 16/01/2011 23:39

you need some more important things to worry about if this troubles you

SecretNutellaFix · 16/01/2011 23:41

I'm against it, if for the fact I have seen a kid nearly tip the trolley over.

amistillsexy · 16/01/2011 23:41

I too think it's disgusting and always tell my DSs they can't do it because that's where we put our food. They sometimes ask, but are never allowed. Think it's also really dangerous, especially when they're in the small trolleys.
If a child is too big for the little seat, he/she should be walking.

Dolcegusto · 16/01/2011 23:41

I don't let dcs do when I'm food shopping as they have double seats in the trolleys, plus it gets filled up pretty quickly, but I do let dd1 stand up when we go to tesco home store (or whatever it's called) as they font gave double child seats as it stops her whinging.

Don't really see the problem though, surely you wash anything not wrapped anyway?

tigitigi · 16/01/2011 23:42

My ds does this sometimes when he is a little tired. If you don't like it bring sterilising spray when you go to the supermarket.

kelway · 16/01/2011 23:43

i think it is common sense that you don't put feet in a trolley where you put food and i am not someone who is obsessed with cleanliness. someone who thinks this is alright either does it themselves or is a dog lover :)

OP posts:
Dolcegusto · 16/01/2011 23:43

Don't have not font gave

kelway · 16/01/2011 23:44

idea to tigitigi - why don't you put shoes covers on your sons shoes next time he is tired and you go shopping

OP posts:
mutznutz · 16/01/2011 23:45

I never thought about it from a 'feet' point of view but I hate seeing kids do it anyway. Either make them sit in it properly or make them walk with you...not rocket science really.

COCKadoodledooo · 16/01/2011 23:45

Meh. Everything you out in the trolley is so ridiculously over-packaged it's not a problem.

I barely register other people/their kids when I'm shopping, but if I saw it I don't expect I'd think anything more than "there's a kid standing up in that trolley".

COCKadoodledooo · 16/01/2011 23:45

put not out.

onlyjuststillme · 16/01/2011 23:45

Rain, bird poo, leaked food and drink, rats climbing over them - I really dont think a kids shoes are the worst things shopping trolleys have been in contact with. If its safety you are worried about you may have a point but cleanliness???? Wash your food!!!

juneybean · 16/01/2011 23:46

I wouldn't allow a child to stand up for health and safety of the child, not so much about getting dirt in the trolley, I often let my charge sit in the trolley as we go round.

Surely food is in containers???

hmc · 16/01/2011 23:49

Personally I don't give a flying fuck if I see someone doing this - whatever helps the parent and child to complete the supermarket shop with the parent's sanity still intact. My children are way too old for such high jinks now but I do recall what supermarket shopping with a pre-schooler was like (shudder)

Most food is packaged so I don't get the hygience objection

MotherJack · 16/01/2011 23:50

Absolutely - there's a thread around where people are worrying about people behind them putting stuff on the conveyor belt before they have put their last bit of shopping on it. Find that. It's probably right up your street. I've been on it because it's been good humoured and a distraction from my world of shoite.

My son often stands in my trolley - he has Aspergers and a far more sinister condition known as Arnold Chiari Malformation Type 1. He's only just turned 6, but the size of a 8 or 9 year old.

He looks fine, and no doubt down to his Aspergers and people's general perception of it may look a little spoiled too. But if I need food in the house, I need to find a way to do that. People need to find ways to do all sorts of things for all manner of reasons.

Go and find something to really worry about. Or solve the problem for mums like me to go supermarket shopping. Online shopping is not the answer by the way.

zisforzebra · 16/01/2011 23:51

I have let ds2 do this on more than one occasion. He falls into the 'has a illness and is too tired to walk' category and, at 7, is too big to either carry far or sit in the seat.

It's not ideal and I've had looks but since there are some days when he's too exhausted to eat let alone walk I'm afraid i don't give it a second thought.

kelway · 16/01/2011 23:54

i guess sitting isn't the same as standing. what about break rolls!! i have often had the odd bread roll fall out of a bag from the bakery. and i wouldn't particularly like the remnants of a runny dogs poo on the underside of a tin of baked beans. I don't think rats would make it up the shiny metal slim legs of a trolley, i don't mind rain water. not sure about bird poo but where shop the trolleys are underneath right by the door, never seen any birds dare fly that close to the trolleys so doubt they have bird poo, the odd snotty disgarded tissue, yes. petty i may be but i still don't like standing footwear in the trolley. funny thing is that i bet alot of the perpetrators are the type who expect you to take your shoes off when you go into their home (wink)

I see it all the time and it annoys me too. Although its preferable to them running around like tasmanian devils and getting in everyone elses way.

I dont know why supermarkets dont have a creche, they could make a fortune.

Saw a whole family on a trip the other day ... 2 kids in the seat.. two kids in the trolley... no room for any bloody shopping.
Why they ALL had to go I have no idea.. surely the mother would rather do her shopping in peace while the dad took the kids to do something that they might actually find interesting.

The clue is in the name of the item though.. SHOPPING trolley.. its not a buggy.. its for putting your shopping into.

turnipvontrapp · 16/01/2011 23:56

My DS once fell out of a trolley doing this and hit the ground head first like he was diving into a pool. It was a horrible experience and we had to abandon everything and rush to the emergency docs. He was ok but we were both traumatised.

Would never let any of mine stand in a trolley because of this and have to bite my lip not to interfere when I see other kids doing it but sometimes say something just cos I don't want them to fall out like my DS did.

OnEdge · 16/01/2011 23:57

eewwww why call them sprogs ?

dessen · 16/01/2011 23:57

I've no problem with this. I've never done this with my kids as I'd have no room for the shopping.

kelway · 16/01/2011 23:59

Motherjack - i take your point, i apologise for unintentionally offending you

OP posts:
kelway · 17/01/2011 00:00

onedge - why not? just a term i have often used for a child, mine included

YABU. I shop without DD whenever I can but sometimes it is the only way to get the shopping done. Shopping trolleys are vile, not sparkling clean - if you're that fussed, bring something to line the bottom of the trolley. And she has no shit on her shoes because she won't walk anywhere!
