... to think that most MNers live in a bubble?

Seriously, the amount of times I read on here about "oh we earn 70k a year but we're really struggle to provide for little Jacob's polo lessons this year" (or some other such shite).

In real life, the average income of my family and friends is probably circa the national average. I know for a fact that my BIL is on around £6/hr and works 42 hours a week, I know that my best friend's total family income is about 22k because she was talking about mortgages a month ago... I'm talking about hard working people who go out come rain or shine and do their day's work, to provide for their families.... and then I log on here and find out MNers are posting trivial shit about being unable to afford XYZ and feeling hard done by on their incomes of "only" 3x the national average.

I don't know if I've become more sensitive to this crap since starting re-posting on here last year (after a break of about 3 years), but it seems to me that certain members of MN are totally and utterly oblivious as to what the average family is having to endure during this recession.

It's fucking unbelievable, it really is.

In your opinion, why are so many MNers out of touch with reality? Does this site cater to a different class than me? Are avg MNers just generally deluded - do I even belong here any more, with our 21k combined income, worrying about where the next school trip fee is coming from despite the fact that both of us work?

Christ.

Our total income is around the same as yours. 70k is just mind boggling to me.

Newgolddream · 16/01/2011 01:17

No you sound just like me and my family.

i couldn't begin to imagine what i would have to do to earn 70k.

frgr · 16/01/2011 01:19

Imarriedafrog, you're right. I should have said "some". It's clear from replies to this post that I'm not actually alone in this (despite how it feels when I read yet another of those "oh man we only earn 4x what (the reader) earns, how will we cope" threads. It was unfair of me to classify such a large chunk of Mners into that category. It is frustrating, though!

I know exactly how you feel, I occasionally look in on here, but really I feel its not for the likes of me.....very ordinary family, living in a northern town, earnings 25k combined. would love not to have to work, but no choice if I want to clothe/feed/take my kids on a camping holiday.

I think that the fact that the advert on the page next to me as I type is for Boden says it all really Confused

cantspel · 16/01/2011 01:20

I would love to have a family income of 70k but alas i live in the real world

Blackeyeddog · 16/01/2011 01:20

No I promise you we are skint! We work hard and DP is brilliant at his job but these are tough times for us.

ChippingIn · 16/01/2011 01:21

There are posters on here from all income brackets - everyone is entitled to be heard! It's not just for those struggling on the the national average....

There are plenty of posters who have lost their jobs/homes etc and who are struggling to feed the kids.

scottishmummy · 16/01/2011 01:24

scottishmummy · 16/01/2011 01:33

some folk earn diddley squat and are tits.such is life

Geocentric · 16/01/2011 01:35

I agree with SM - I always got the idea that there are all sorts on here. Just look around and ignore the threads that have nothing to do with you, its what I do.

Catnao · 16/01/2011 01:35

I am so glad this thread exists, because whilst I know I should not take an internet thread seriously, or be bothered about it - the idea of earning £70,000 per annum and STRUGGLING made me do a sort of Shock face!

I can't WAIT til I am struggling on £70k a year. I dream of it. Before that thread I was worried I was an ungrateful bitch, you know, working full time, partner working full time, living in a nice place, etc, can't afford holidays abroad...now I know I am actually a saint, and struggling terribly.

Turns central heating up, which I can cos I can afford to, and thinks about raised beds for the garden God, we're deprived!

LadyWellian · 16/01/2011 01:35

I'm afraid we fall into your £70k + bracket but I can assure you I live in the real world.

i read THE THREAD. they fall into the 'tit' category.

probably pleasantly so but still... they will never 'get it' so don't waste your energy.

LadyWellian · 16/01/2011 01:37

Am not complaining about anything, btw. Just a bit Hmm at your idea that I'm somehow living in cloud cuckoo land because DH and I work bloody hard and get a good wage for it.

blinks · 16/01/2011 01:38

bit defensive there ladywellian considering noone mentioned you in any way.

Catnao · 16/01/2011 01:40

But LadyWellian - I thought my partner and I worked hard and earned a good wage....

Oops!

I've got loads of friends who are loaded comfortably off....I haven't seen them moaning about it, so they don't annoy me - I just like going to their nice houses for nice drinks and fun...I think it's the idea (from the other thread) that £70k a year can be DIFFICULT, that made me Shock !

stop bellyaching about other folk.

LadyWellian · 16/01/2011 01:41

Not me personally, no, but there was a general assertion that people on £70k + household income were not 'living in the real world'. We're not struggling but we're not aliens.

Catnao · 16/01/2011 01:43

But LadyWellian - the thread I think this came from suggested the OP there was struggling somehow on £70k!!
