to rather be stupid than ugly?

I find I can get away with being a bit thick because I look good.

AIBU and what would you rather be?

Opting to be stupid is a cop out!

Being beautiful is a bonus. Today even a very plain or as you call "ugly" person can make the most of their looks by using corrective make-up techniques & dressing in classic garments that flatter.

True beauty isn't skin deep, it comes from the soul through and is manifested in how they live their lives and how they treat their fellow men.

TheManWhoSoldtheWorld · 14/01/2011 18:59

I am also equally stunning and plentiful in IQ.

I think I would rather be very clever, than beautiful. Actually not clever as such but innovative or entrepreneurial. That way you can actually do something with your ability rather than be just clever.

AtYourCervix · 14/01/2011 19:05

i'd still rather be thin. (see, empty headed fool that I am)

I think it's easier to make friends and have more sincere relationships when you're not stunningly good looking. Like LeQueen said you do get a lot of breaks in life but it can also be a double edged sword... Brains with prettier side of average looks would be your best bet I'd say!

PatFig · 14/01/2011 19:53

I am both and I smell

Grandmar · 14/01/2011 19:55

Cosmetic surgery is available. Brain transplants are not

bishboschone · 14/01/2011 20:02

We have a customer who is properly ugly..think witch..but has a great job(she likes to tell me) she is obviously very bright but jeez my eyes burn when I look at her.
The thing is about ugliness is its actually down to grooming . I dont think anyone is actually ugly but they dont 'try' to be pretty. I mean really who wakes up beautiful??

So i think you can be clever and make a huge effort if you are not blessed in the looks department and viola..happy days!

lovelyopaque · 14/01/2011 20:14

Whether to be intelligent or not (if you had the choice) depends on if you get a large dollop of confidence to go with it! If you are prone to worrying and overthinking, intelligence can be a real downer. It is the blithely unconcerned people I envy in life, especially if they look half ok, and have average brains.

Oblomov · 14/01/2011 20:42

I am more clever than stupid.
More ugly than beautiful.
Am happy with that. Or have accepted it. Not sure.
But I would prefer it to being pretty and stupid aka OP.

yeah but they are 'normal ' people are they? Thats why they earn millions to be on screen.

Oblomov · 14/01/2011 20:59

Actually, I lied. I would trade in quite alot of my IQ to have a bit more Kelly Brook/ Penelope Cruz.
Yeah I lied. I would give up quite alot actually.
Don't that say that the average child turns into the REAL beauty. I think that is true.

FellatioNelson · 14/01/2011 21:04

Very beautifuk babies/children do not always make stunning adults, but sometimes the gawky ugly duckling child really does turn into the swan. That must be a tough lesson to learn if you are a very beautiful child who goes plain once puberty hits.

FellatioNelson · 14/01/2011 21:05

Oh. Beautifuk. That must be a Freudian slip. Grin

Takeresponsibility · 14/01/2011 21:07

Don't be too sure on the Angelina Jolie first thing in the morning theory. We have to see all manner of "famous people" when they enter the country, usually in the middle of the night and they have to be woken up.

Quite apart from the fact that many of them are obnoxious and thick as a plank, they pretty universally look rough without the make up, hair lighting, airbushing etc. It's quite a reality check believe me.

(The really famous ones are usually pleasant though, it's the ones who have had one hit single or been in a soap for five minutes who act like they are the Queen of Sheba)

FellatioNelson · 14/01/2011 21:22

I have heard that George Clooney is the nicest man in the world. I'd forgive him if he looked a bit rough and had morning breath after a long haul flight.

i am v clever and v bonnie.no dilemma

StarlightPrincess · 14/01/2011 22:50

I know looks fade...but I'd still rather be gorgeous and thick than stupid but clever. Luckily, I'm gorgeous with an IQ of 135! Grin

onmyfeet · 15/01/2011 06:53

I'd rather be intelligent.

sparkle12mar08 · 15/01/2011 07:54

I'm rather more than averagely intelligent, and am plain looking. I'm not ugly, I know that, but I'd hardly describe myself as either stunning or even pretty. Yes it's shallow but I often think that if I'd been even just vaguely more good looking then life could have worked out even better. At a societal level it's very obvious that pretty, good looking people do better for themselves, other things being equal, than those percieved as lees good looking. Ultimately I'd like to have a bit more of both, but I settle for what I have and try to live the best I can.

On a sideways note, the most beautiful woman I have ever, ever seen, in every sense of the word, so beautiful that I still think of it a decade later, was an actress in her 60's or 70's. I've tried so hard to remember the show or her name, but I can't. She was hauntingly beautiful, graceful, alive, her eyes had more life in them, more experience and talent to project it, than I have ever seen. She was breath taking. But to some she'd just be any old woman on the telly I'm sure. It's all perception.

LadyOfTheManor · 15/01/2011 08:04

You can't possibly be intelligent if you believe an IQ score indicates your intelligence, over your "test-taking" abilities.

I think you have to be pretty(!) stupid to spend time wondering if you'd rather be beautiful or intelligent-or what "box" you'd put yourself in.

MarshaBrady · 15/01/2011 08:06

The world is usually kinder to beautiful people. One way to counteract it is to be very wealthy.
(flippant)

Being skinny and academic as a child I got loads better looking at 17. Life became more interesting, people are nicer to you (terrible!).

So I say both!

BlackSwan · 15/01/2011 08:25

"Marsha Marsha Marsha"

To quote another source...perhaps this is already somewhere up the thread:

In The Great Gatsby Daisy says of her little girl "I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool -- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."

MarshaBrady · 15/01/2011 09:06

Or if one is extremely intelligent than be surrounded around people that admire this quality. Write uber successful papers, get a Nobel prize! No one will care if your shirt is unironed....
