I find I can get away with being a bit thick because I look good.

AIBU and what would you rather be?

How depressing. There are actually people who think it is better to be beautiful but stupid Shock. Far rather have brains. Beauty is only skin deep.

pranma · 14/01/2011 11:06

I would much rather be ugly than stupid-in fact I am neither but I'd never miss all the froth that seems to go with pretty girls who are also stupid whereas I'd hate not to be able to have a good conversation, read a decent book etc.Not even sure why I am bothering to respond...maybe I am a bit stupid :)

BuzzLightBeer · 14/01/2011 11:26

Can't you be both?

expatinscotland · 14/01/2011 11:28

YANBU.

I'd rather be stupid.

Ignorance is bliss often enough.

If you add in looks and youth, it's not a bad combination.

Brains are over-rated, IME.

expatinscotland · 14/01/2011 11:30

'Beauty is only skin deep.'

Not true at all.

I've met many people who are beautiful to look at and good, sweet, thoughtful people inside.

duchesse · 14/01/2011 11:33

We're all different. Some people are beautiful but stupid, some ugly but clever, some ugly and stupid and some are beautiful and clever. Some people are stupid and kind, some stupid and horrible. You get the idea.

On the whole I would prefer to be ugly and clever.

Punkatheart · 14/01/2011 11:33

Honeydragon, I doubt if you are ugly and stupid.

But you are funny. Grin

As someone who has lost their hair with chemo several times and been ugly - I coped. My brain much more valuable. I would hate to bore myself...where would I go?

kepler10b · 14/01/2011 11:35

it always amazes me the number of women who think using good looks to snare a husband is a top plan and are then surprised when the same man goes off with a more beautiful version or has an affair. men who are completely won over by looks alone are of the shallow fickle variety.

better to be with a man who finds you beautiful enough but loves you more for your personality / mind.

unless of course you are just planning on using a good divorce lawyer and don't really care if the marriage lasts. then you are both shallow and deserve each other.

Punkatheart · 14/01/2011 11:38

Spot on, Kepler. My man has been with me through ugliness and not. He is a keeper. Look for depth.

WinkyWinkola · 14/01/2011 11:38

I can't decide!

If you were stupid and good looking, you'd be easily entertained and wouldn't need much by way of occupation. Presumably your pretty face would provide you with hours of fascination. I reckon you'd be quite content and not really thinking about stuff of any great importance.

If you're clever, it does have its advantages, of course. But perhaps one can think too much on things, be too aware and informed of the misery in the world, be mindful of one's own failings etc.

I don't know.

MainlyMaynie · 14/01/2011 11:38

Choosing beauty over brains because it might make people treat you nicely means choosing a life centred around what happens to you, rather than the positive impact you can have on the world. Which is pretty stupid in itself.

FellatioNelson · 14/01/2011 11:41

Am I the only person on this thread to be merely slightly above average in both beauty and intelligence? I scrub up ok on both counts but I'm not winning any prizes in either discipline. Grin

I think on balance I'd plump for being pretty but stupid. There are more very rich women who are pretty but stupid than there are rich women who are clever but ugly. And I want to be very rich. The great benefit of being stupid is that you rarely realise it yourself. Ignorance is bliss. Whereas if you are clever but ugly, you definitely know about it, and can get quite fed up and bitter if you give it too much thought.

elmofan · 14/01/2011 11:49

Beauty is only skin deep but ugliness goes right to the bone Wink

I'm not saying it is better (for you or for the world) to be pretty and stupid rather than clever and ugly, I'm saying that I think you would be happier because you wouldn't think too much and I believe that thinking is a prime cause of unhappiness.

TrillianAstra · 14/01/2011 11:54

Reality have you peed on anything interesting yet today?

I would hate to be thick, I wouldn't relish being ugly either but would opt to be plain and clever rather than beautiful and vacuous. Looks fade (so does intelligence, but more slowly!)

lady007pink · 14/01/2011 12:01

I'm an Aspie (not diagnosed, but I know i am), so I always came across as thick.
But I thank the Lord I was blessed with reasonable looks!

Trillian - I agree that thinking is the prime cause of unhappiness. Sometimes you just cannot stop the chattering monkeys.

TrillianAstra · 14/01/2011 12:04

Do you have a thread for it? We need a dedicated threaad...

I am very ashamed to say that I think I would swap 10-20 IQ points for longer legs! I'd still be bright enough (and maybe have learnt earlier how to work hard as I used to coast a bit) but I would have so many more clothing options and would run like a gazelle instead of a hippo.

I think that most of our beauty criteria are under our control (not referring to plastic surgery - more the things that make you look healthy and clean). There are very few "ugly" people that couldn't scrub up well, given enough time, to be considered pretty.
