I hate soap snobbery.

It's like football snobbery. Or 'anything really popular' snobbery of any type, really.

It just makes the 'hater' appear thick.

AbsofCroissant · 06/01/2011 17:03

Not necessarily thick, but, IMO either really, really depressed, or wanting to be really really depressed. How can you watch such hideous looking people shouting at each other and being dim for entertainment? I don't get it.

But then, I've been more of the American Soap fan myself, like Sunset Beach, Days of our Lives - ridiculous, shallow and stupid, but not pretending to be anything else.

JakeBrake · 06/01/2011 17:03

You interpret too literally. Intellectually aspirational

I am a doctor and have watched EE since I was 14! I love the characters and use it as a form of ecsapism - in the same way as when I read Heat or watch X factor.

I have enough high brow at work!

AbsofCroissant · 06/01/2011 17:05

Ages storylines like this
or this

Fun times!

ItsGraceAgain · 06/01/2011 17:06

Apparently Ronnie's resigned because she was so upset by playing that episode. It's a good thing she's never going to get a part as Lady Macbeth, isn't it? She'd be scarred for life.

Think she might, just possibly, be in the wrong job ...

JakeBrake · 06/01/2011 17:06

High brow? Gamny legs and swine flu?;)

OP posts:
AbsofCroissant · 06/01/2011 17:07

See, now I also have lot of highbrow stuff at work, and also some emotionally draining and downright shocking stuff. So when I want to relax, I don't go and watch a TV show about people being murdered, having severe mental problems and sexual abuse to unwind. Maybe I'm just special ...

fallot · 06/01/2011 17:07

I am a neurologist! Grin

SixtyFootDoll · 06/01/2011 17:09

I dont like any of the soaps, I get enough of moaning miserable people all day at work.

Does this make me intellyjunt?

Confuzled · 06/01/2011 17:09

Of course it is "lowbrow" to watch things with melodramatic plots like this Hmm

Puffykins · 06/01/2011 17:12

I think you're all giving EastEnders too short shrift. It is aspirational, in some ways. Look at Bianca: raising 5 children - Whitney isn't even hers and she long since split with Whitney's father (maybe he's dead) - with no money except child benefit and what she earns in the caff. But they're not short of love. Look at Darren, giving up going to the World Cup to keep a baby he had as a result of a one night stand in nappies. And Dot, who always has a biblical verse, cup of tea and a biscuit for a troubled soul.
I watch Eastenders because, if you take away the murders/ rapes etc., it kind of restores my faith in human nature. There are strong themes - the importance of family being the key one.

WadyaFink · 06/01/2011 17:14

Just realised where you've come from, Jake. Your usual playground has started to charge admission so you've come to play with us!!

Yay, - noo friends!!

Jackin · 06/01/2011 17:14

It's so relentlessly depressing. All the soaps are. I can't be bothered with it. I don't have time to watch much tele as it is let alone this depressing bollocks

usualsuspect · 06/01/2011 17:18

I wish they would bring back Sons and Daughters ...my favourite soap ever

JakeBrake · 06/01/2011 17:19

Playground admission? No idea of what you speak
Lol at cat. And fallot

2shoes · 06/01/2011 17:23

I think the op is slightly thick.
or a wind up merchant.
but hey ho

BuzzLightBeer · 06/01/2011 17:23

Not snobby about it but I've never understood how people can devote so much time and attention to soaps? Some people watch all of them, how can they watch it for so many hours without wanting to kill themselves? And how can you keep track of all of the different people and the storylines?

Too. Much. Effort.

JakeBrake · 06/01/2011 17:25

Agree. Used to watch coronation street to empathise with proletariat. Then not enough time
