to think that some smokers are selfish f****?

so DH and I took my mum (who we rarely see for geographical reasons) and 9-month-old DS for lunch at a pricey restaurant in London today. It was freezing but there were no seats available inside, so at the suggestion of the waitress we sat at a table outside, near a patio heater, and ordered what looked set to be a very nice lunch.
A few minutes after we sat down, a woman in her 50s and her younger male companion came and sat on the table next to us, and both proceeded to light up cigarettes, inches from DS's face (the tables were extremely close together, and he was sitting on my mum's lap, happily eating his lunch). DH very politely asked the man if they would mind not smoking so close to the baby, to which he replied: "It's a free country". His leather-faced companion then gestured to a table at the other end of the al fresco area, with no heater anywhere near, and said: "Nobody's stopping you from moving". DH was quite stunned, and said: 'I think that's quite inconsiderate; it's really bad for the baby", and the bloke said: "I know", before shrugging his shoulders and turning back to his haggard old witch of a friend. I couldn't believe that people could be so selfish; to expect my DS (who had been sitting there before them) to either inhale all of their carcinogens (the fact the guy acknowledged that his habit was harmful to DC was quite shocking) or freeze, just so they could get their nicotine fix. Why the f* did they not move? We did get up and try to cancel our order; it was too late so we had to sit, completely freezing, in the heater-free zone. I have no axe to grind with smokers; if someone chooses to poison their own body it's no one's business but their own. But I would never think that others should suffer just so I could indulge a habit, and if someone were to ask me to stop doing something (talking too loudly in a restaurant etc) I would be so mortified at the prospect of impacting someone's enjoyment of their meal I would stop immediately, as they have just as much right to a nice lunch/dinner out as I do.
People always go on about a 'right to smoke': AIBU to think that right extends only to a smoker's home, or a child-free area? My blood is still boiling over those bastards!

Seems many strangers aren't that considerate to others in London. People rarely look you in the eye there anyway - never mind showing normal levels of politeness. Thankfully i live in somewhere where people are a bit more human.

curlymama · 03/01/2011 23:02

Their right to smoke is not more important than your baby's right to eat his lunch. but it is equal. Your son does not have more right just because he is a baby.

But if he was genuinely coughing between mouthfulls, which I very much doubt, than YABVU to have stayed there just because it was too late to cancel your order. Methinks you may have been exaggerating a tad.

Why was it too late anyway, who were you worried about offending? Or would you have had to pay if you'd left? In which case you are being even more U to put the cost of a meal before your baby's health, seeing as you believe he was being so badly affected.

mutznutz · 03/01/2011 23:03

Can anyone tell me what the OP was supposed to be protecting her baby from...given the fact a bit of smoke blowing in the babies direction in the open air (and yes OP..legally smoking areas have to be open) wouldn't do any harm?

animula · 03/01/2011 23:04

Oi, SkyBluePearl, do not turn this into a Londoner-bashing thread.

It'll just go really pear-shaped.

Vallhala · 03/01/2011 23:06

madmutz, sorry, no can do.

OP - the coughing between mouthfuls - are you sure this was owing to smoke... or was it due to pneumonia the cold weather?

scurryfunge · 03/01/2011 23:07

Is it a bird?

Is it a plane?

No, it's glitzalicious.......it fell into a vat of benson and hedges juices and emerged as our hero-intolerent-of anyone-any-fucking-where.

MumGoneCrazy · 03/01/2011 23:07

There's nothing better than a fag & a cuppa after an afternoon of shopping...ahhh bliss

As I no longer have the right to sit in the warm comfort of a cafe or restaurant while smoking, I will sit as close to a heater outside as possible in these cold months, and if someone who dislikes smoke chooses to sit outside then complain about my smoke and ask me to move then I would be tempted to stick my fag butt right up their....Grin

gordyslovesheep · 03/01/2011 23:08

what Mumgonecrazy said right there - I am an ex smoker but I also have a CHOICE to go indoors - smokers don't :)

MumGoneCrazy · 03/01/2011 23:09

Ok I wouldn't go that far...but I wouldn't move...Sorry Grin

winnybella · 03/01/2011 23:10

But, MumGoneCrazy- would you choose to sit down between two families with babies/young children and smoke?

mutznutz · 03/01/2011 23:11

Loving the name madmutz lmao!!

curlymama · 03/01/2011 23:14

Winniybella, I would, if there was nowhere else to sit. And in this case there wasn't because the restaurant didn't provide any more heaters where apparantly there was lots of space. But like I said, I would hold my cigarette considerately and probably only have one instead of three.

OP should make a complaint to the restaurant if she feels this strongly. They can still choose to make outdoor seating areas non smoking.

I may be wrong but I think London has more than one restaurant as well - and some of them have more than 2 seats!

MumGoneCrazy · 03/01/2011 23:22

I have 4DC myself - If we are outside should I leave them alone while I wander off to have a ciggie?

And before I get flamed....No I am not proud that I smoke around my DC and have tried to quit many a time (trying again tomorrow infact Blush) and do not blow the smoke in their direction but then I wouldn't have my DC outside eating on a cold Jan afternoon. If eating out with DP and DC we always eat somewhere indoors (except in summer) then take it in turns to go outside for a quick fag after our meal.

I wouldn't choose to sit between two families no but then I wouldn't ask anyone to move tables for me..If I didn't like the situation it's my problem not theirs so I would move.

DioneTheDiabolist · 03/01/2011 23:22

Glitz, you ordered or you were eating? If you were eating, did you really up plates, forks, knives, glasses and move?

gordyslovesheep · 03/01/2011 23:24

Gordy - is that prescription or non prescription?

MrsRhettButler · 03/01/2011 23:30

ahhh that explains it... the poor op's in shock! :(

sit down and have a nice cuppa and a fag Grin

winnybella · 03/01/2011 23:31

MumGoneCrazy- I got the impression that the smoke was going directly on OP's baby. I smoke, too and have smoked in restaurants while with DCs-but always make sure I'm not blowing my smoke on them iyswim.

If I was sitting at a table smoking and a couple with a kid came and sat next to me and started to complain, I would be Hmm as they bloody must have seen me smoking, but then I would still make an effort to keep the cig in such a way as to not make the smoke go their way.

gordyslovesheep · 03/01/2011 23:31

I got mine on perscription from my GP - I have quiet a history of being mad but he let my have it :)

My sister can;t have it as she actually proper mad (bipolar) but for most of us it's okay to use and it ruddy well works!

ItsGraceAgain · 03/01/2011 23:32

YABU ffs. I'd have felt extremely tempted to blow smoke in YOUR face, you over-entitled nitwit.

You can breast-feed wherever you like, as far as I'm concerned. Though it would be quite funny if there was a law that said you had to do it outside!
