to think that food from the majority of UK Chinese takeaways is vile?

I just think that half the time it's not worth spending the money and I would be just as happy with cheese on toast.

Do chinese takeaways have one basic standard menu which most of them adhere to?

I went to my aunt's house in Chigwell last night, we had achinese takeaway. The same crappy old boring list of food like I have ordered from any other chinese in any other town in which I have lived.

Kung Po chicken in glutinous, sticky sauce.

What kind of napalm juice do they put in the sweet and sour sauce?

Dessicated and tasteless crispy duck.

Mongolia chicken made of chickens from the original mongol hordes, it seems,

Hot and sour soup made of pva glue.

I have eaten lovely chinese food in chinese restarurants, but takeaways are never worth it I don't think.

Totally agree with you. I tend to get M&S's Chinese stuff as slightly better than takeaway.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 03/01/2011 17:10

May I direct you towards the worlds best hot and soup and good menu

And may your face go Xmas Envy

T'is my local, they don't do freebies tho Xmas Hmm

borderslass · 03/01/2011 17:10

I quite like our one

NormalityBites · 03/01/2011 17:11

There are some horrendous ones, I agree. Thankfully we have the best Chinese restaurant in town less than a mile away and they do takeaway (though at restaurant prices) but in exchange you know you're getting very good grub. Fresh, nicely spiced, colourful and without lashings of MSG Grin

We've tried several others, gelatinous, deep fried and unimaginative seemed to be the themes of choice.

I love the food but it's definitely getting more expensive

Hullygully · 03/01/2011 17:12

Unspeakably vile. Tasteless, glutinous MSG slop.

FabbyChic · 03/01/2011 17:12

Love chinese takeaways.

Hullygully · 03/01/2011 17:12

And in restaurants.

meantosay · 03/01/2011 17:13

YANBU. I never buy chinese takeaways anymore. They all taste the same and you would have a bit of chicken stir fried in some ginger, soya sauce and chinese 5 spice in no time and it tastes much better and healthier.

Honeydragon · 03/01/2011 17:14

My Word!
ACheese that's one of my favourite places....dh and I used to book holidays purely as an excuse to go Grin

LetThereBeRock · 03/01/2011 17:15

YABU.Our local(ish) restaurant is lovely.

Of course there are bad Chinese restaurants out there, but they aren't all like that.

And personally I love the gelatinous Kung pao chicken.

Lovecat · 03/01/2011 17:20

Chigwell? Which one?

My ILs live there, but not in the posh bit, The Garden is their local one and it's lush. Pancake rolls the size of a baby's arm...

DorisVinyard · 03/01/2011 17:21

Agree with Hully. Chinese food, Boak.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/01/2011 17:25

I used to go to Yeungs at the Cattle Market a lot, can't remember if they do takeaways; anyway, bang bang chicken om nom nom

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/01/2011 17:25

Oh I am glad that lots of you agree.

Lovecat - I have no idea what it was called.

I always feel a bit doom laden when you go somewhere/someone comes round to yours and somehow it is agreed that you will order a takeaway chinese/indian/pizza.

Takeaway pizza is vile as well, and I can cook a better curry than most takeaways, so end up with chinese food more often than not and it invariably disappoints.

I would rather eat out rather than fork out £££ for shite food. And then you have to do the bloody dishes.

HeroShrew · 03/01/2011 17:26

We don't order it as it gives DP the shits. Assume it's the MSG... Vile stuff. Why is it not banned?

Shame as I like the cuisine itself. I once ate in Hakkasan which has a michelin star and I was in absolute heaven.

BuzzLightBeer · 03/01/2011 17:27

then don't eat it? or is that too obvious?

LetThereBeRock · 03/01/2011 17:27

Why would it be banned? Not everyone reacts to it.

LetThereBeRock · 03/01/2011 17:27

I do agree re takeaway pizzas, unless you order them from an Italian restaurant.

TrillianAstra · 03/01/2011 17:29

Depends if you like Chinese takeaway I guess.

We have a v nice one, used to be in walking distance, not any more sadly (we moved, it stayed where it was) now we are close to a lovely Indian takeaway place instead.

Takeaway pizza pointless when we live near Asda, and the one thing Asda is good at is the pizza counter.

TrillianAstra · 03/01/2011 17:30

Most people have no reaction to MSG.

Same way most people have no reaction to peanuts.

You don't see any sane people with nut allergies saying that nuts shouldn't be allowed to be in food.

Do you get headaches when you eat parmesan by the way?

SantosLHalper · 03/01/2011 17:39

We have a very nice Chinese takeaway locally and as MSG causes me to have migraines they kindly leave it out at my request.

So YABU. If you don't like Chinese food, don't buy it.

porcamiseria · 03/01/2011 17:41

agree!!! somehow thai manage it, but chinese usually rank, takeaway i mean

AuntiePickleBottom · 03/01/2011 17:51

the one i order from is lovely, could do with one now mmmmm

Lizcat · 03/01/2011 17:51

I live in a town with no less than 8 chinese takeaways there are rubbish ones and excellent one just like any other food.
