to think that food from the majority of UK Chinese takeaways is vile?

I just think that half the time it's not worth spending the money and I would be just as happy with cheese on toast.

Do chinese takeaways have one basic standard menu which most of them adhere to?

I went to my aunt's house in Chigwell last night, we had achinese takeaway. The same crappy old boring list of food like I have ordered from any other chinese in any other town in which I have lived.

Kung Po chicken in glutinous, sticky sauce.

What kind of napalm juice do they put in the sweet and sour sauce?

Dessicated and tasteless crispy duck.

Mongolia chicken made of chickens from the original mongol hordes, it seems,

Hot and sour soup made of pva glue.

I have eaten lovely chinese food in chinese restarurants, but takeaways are never worth it I don't think.

Hang on a min - the address is Barrow in Furness, not Ulverston. Why is it called the Ulverston restaurant then?

OpenToLawSuits · 03/01/2011 18:17

They may eat in the restaurants, but I bet your bottom dollar they get stuff that isn't on the menu. the sods.

thenightsky · 03/01/2011 18:17

~Riven.... DS's nearest supermarket in Lancaster is Booths... they are THE most spoiled students in the world Grin

EdgarAleNPie · 03/01/2011 18:17

well, the best chinese food i had was in china and very different..

but i have to sya, thee's nowt wrong with a bit of a chinglish blow out. MSG-coma inducing though it is.

LetThereBeRock · 03/01/2011 18:18

They were eating from the standard buffet when I saw them.

TheSmallClanger · 03/01/2011 18:19

YANBU. I don't like Anglo-Chinese food at all, particular in take away form.

In my old job, I kept having to go to functions at this large, pretentious Chinese restaurant. I used to carry a bag of Mini Cheddars and a Mars Bar in my handbag so I didn't pass out.

TrillianAstra · 03/01/2011 18:19

I want Chinese crap for dinner now, not the stew I've made.

You bastards.

It's not even open on Mondays.

No decent chinese takeaways around here, there is a fabulous one near my dad though, it's attached to a restaurant.

We have a nice indian takeaway, where the owner has a few restaurants as well.

Fish and chip shops, the local one is disgusting with the most miserable staff ever. There is an amazing fish and chip shop in Amble though, worth the 45 minute drive just for that! DS2 loves fish but hates the batter so he just has the cod coated in flour and deep fried.

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/01/2011 18:22

Grin trillian

My dd loves chinese takeaways, she is never happier when she is eating black bean sauce crap, whilst I sit there hatchet faced.

I miss Squires fish and chip shop in Braunton.

Oh GOD I want haddock, chips, mushy peas and vinegar NOW.

TrillianAstra · 03/01/2011 18:24

Yes but your DD also wants to eat curry with yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes, IIRC Grin

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/01/2011 18:26

Yes that is TRUE.

She is a teenager, she knows nowt.

I found out this weekend that dd ate matteson sausage and jam sandwiches last week Hmm

YEARS I have spent slaving over the stove making nutritious food for my daughter, and she eats matteson sausages. With jam.

I may as well have given her heinz jarred baby food from birth.

TrillianAstra · 03/01/2011 18:27

No idea what a matteson sausage is, but I do read the backs of sausage packets looking for meat content, and would never eat sausages with jam anyway!

ProfYaffle · 03/01/2011 18:35

Our local Chinese take away is lovely, all made from scratch, fresh, colourful lots of crunchy veg. The Thai and Indian are great too.

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/01/2011 18:35

I don't think there is any meat in mattesons sausages.

It is not something I buy, dd ate it at a mate's house and promptly threw a couple in the trolley in sainsbos 'mum I had those in sandwiches at Sophie's house, with jam, they were lovely' and then pointed and laughed at the look on my face.

Our only local takeaway is a Chinese and it is truly, truly vile. However, we, along with everyone else in the village still order from there in occasional desperation and thinking that surely it can't be that bad?! Only, it is. Only certain dishes are even edible, a lot of them taste the same and I have had off prawns from there on at least three occasions.

I find most chinese takeaways edible, although some are much better than others.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 03/01/2011 18:46

Respect to honeydragon choosing holidays based on good chinese grub

Blush @ me tho, i'm on first name terms with the owners and can be found holed up in there at least once a week, they even bought me a birthday present Blush

expatinscotland · 03/01/2011 18:48

YANBU

JaneS · 03/01/2011 18:55

Prof, you miss the point as far as I'm concerned. I don't want fresh veg for a takeaway, I want delicious unhealthy food!

Mind you, one of my formative experiences was when very few Chinese were allowed to travel to Britain, and my dad ended up hosting a Chinese colleague who wanted to cook us all a big banquet. He cooked the most delicious food (though he assumed any household had soy sauce - not the case!). He came from Northern China and he explained that in their cooking, vegetables are often pickled or cooked in pork fat, and one of the usual things to eat are dumplings made of pickled veg and pork, dipped in a mix of vinegar and soy sauce.

They are the most unhealthy, un-fresh, fatty things. And totally authentic, and delicious.

Normanshormones · 03/01/2011 18:55

Our local Chinese takeaway's food is delicious with lots of choice of dishes.

Only thing is, they add so much MSG my head feels as if it's in a vice 30 minutes after I've eaten - very strange sensation! I don't buy from there any more.

Our local Indian cook fresh ingredients (nothing artificial added) from scratch while you wait & watch and their food is gorgeous.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 03/01/2011 18:56

They have one in Barrow and one in Ulverston thenightsky, the one in Barrow has a very good buffet, the one in Ulverston is smaller and dosen't have a buffet but my LORD the food is so fresh, really fab.All food containing MSG is labelled and will do an MSG free version if asked

We prefer the ulverston one, better pubs to slope off to but the foods good in both. And they have a chocolate fountain.

Went to an awful one in Preston recently, the food was bloody cold and I was very luckey not to get poisoned by eggs which smelt of rotton fanny, told me mate not to go in, it was the only place not busy for a start, not a good sign as it was cheap, and would she listen ?? No she would not. Cheesey knows a good takeaway when she smells one and thattun didn't smell right !!

And yes to Booths bread/Butchers Riven, we're very luckey in the sticks Xmas Grin

TheFeministParent · 03/01/2011 19:02

I used to go to one in a tiny village in Somerset, it was by far the best ever. Also another in a town called Street that had a fabulous take away. Alas now in Bristol it's all yucky.

Remotew · 03/01/2011 19:05

The Jade Fountain, is there one in Barrow and one in Ulverston? I'm Confused might be worth a visit next time I travel through.

Remotew · 03/01/2011 19:08

X post, thanks Cheese, must make a mental note.
