frozen roast potatoes are for emergencies not for Christmas day

I made a double chocolate baked cheese cake for Christmas with the in-laws - they didn't eat it and chose tesco value chocolate cake over my homemade dessert. I had to laugh - my dessert was yummy and dh and dd both ate mine. dh was horrified that his family were so rude and also by their taste buds.

I was alarmed when I went to the fridge on Christmas eve for dd's milk to see no sign of a Christmas dinner. My assumptions were correct - all from the freezer - even the veg including roast potatoes and yorkshire puddings to go with the Iceland roast pork and lamb.

Luckily, my aunt made a fab Christmas dinner on Monday so at least I've had real Christmas dinner.

Don't mean to sound snobby, but I come from a family that enjoys homemade food.

There you are, LeQ. :)

KatieScarlett2833 · 04/01/2011 20:33

FFS, get your man to do Christmas dinner like I do, it keeps him out the way while I am busy achieving rock star status on Guitar Hero. If you get into it, it is possible like me to ignore DS who set himself on fire sitting too close to the candles n pebbly shit.

Yes, what prompted the previous owner to cover up pre-war original hardwood with the aforementioned BOAK-tastic vinyl and a nasty cheap grey-ish carpet I'll never know. Sigh...we are remedying it as quickly as possible.

KatieScarlett2833 · 04/01/2011 20:43

Yes, he dropped and rolled like a true pro. When we all laughed at him his reply was "well being on fire hurts you know". Oh, bless, the memories, would have missed it if I knew how to cook.

FattyArbuckel · 04/01/2011 20:58

What is the point of frozen potatoes?!!

Are they easier or faster or both? or cheaper? I think they would just clog up the freezer and am truly baffled as to why folk buy them.

I would be disappointed to get them for Christmas lunch, OP.

I do believe we have already had that chat LeQueen in fact, I bought a few extra candles and fairy lights in your honour.

FellatioNelson · 04/01/2011 21:16

Fatty how can you still be concerning yourself with the potatoes? Christmas has been and gone, LeQueen is traumatised and Katie's son is on fire. Get a grip woman. Keep up. Angry

LeQ said "lounge" Shock

I am quite envious of stairs leading off the kitchen though. Only lovely houses have such an original feature, silly previous poster knows nothing. Nothing!

Mists · 04/01/2011 21:20

Has anyone considered basting Katie's son in goose fat yet?

KatieScarlett2833 · 04/01/2011 21:23

No, he's a bit wiry, not much fat on him. I will recommend dressing child in a poly/nylon combo hoodie before setting them alight. It was spectacular, went right through his new COD T shirt too.

YABU for the first time this year we decided we we're going to put our family first and stay at home for christmas.

To make it so I didnt miss most of it slaving away in the kitchen, we decided to have a ready-made christmas, whereby everything came from M&S pre-packed range and all I did was shove it in the oven at the appropriate time. I love a good old fashioned home cooked from scratch meal myself but on christmas day, Id rather watch my kids open their pressies Grin

FellatioNelson · 04/01/2011 22:28

Another one who can't do both. Tut. Hmm Those of us who actually manage to pull off this monumental feat must be extraordinarily talented.

babeinthewood · 04/01/2011 22:39

Ive done it before and hated it! I have some friends who do the dinner on Christmas eve so they dont have to miss out.

Its a national holiday and that includes ME so stuff whats 'proper' I will kick back and have a relaxing christmas day thanks very much, its not like Im asking anyone else to eat it......and there are children starving in africa who would probably eat it regardless of wether it had been frozen or not! frankly in the grand scheme of things it doesnt matter! Grin

babeinthewood · 04/01/2011 22:48

oh and btw frozen veg are actually better for you because they retain alot of the freshly picked vitamins they lose when you buy unfrozen Grin

FellatioNelson · 04/01/2011 23:22

Well starving children in Africa generally eat sloppy maize gruel, but I'm not planning on having that for Christmas dinner just beacuse they do.

And (most) frozen veg may retain more nutrients, but they taste like soggy shite.

FellatioNelson · 04/01/2011 23:23

Seriously - have you ever had frozen sprouts?

there is never a situation where frozen roast potatoes should even be considered.

If you want to keep the vitamins in your veg steam them rather than boil. When they are still firm take them off the heat and more nutrients will stay in, as long as the lid is on they ill continue to cook in their own heat.
