frozen roast potatoes are for emergencies not for Christmas day

I made a double chocolate baked cheese cake for Christmas with the in-laws - they didn't eat it and chose tesco value chocolate cake over my homemade dessert. I had to laugh - my dessert was yummy and dh and dd both ate mine. dh was horrified that his family were so rude and also by their taste buds.

I was alarmed when I went to the fridge on Christmas eve for dd's milk to see no sign of a Christmas dinner. My assumptions were correct - all from the freezer - even the veg including roast potatoes and yorkshire puddings to go with the Iceland roast pork and lamb.

Luckily, my aunt made a fab Christmas dinner on Monday so at least I've had real Christmas dinner.

Don't mean to sound snobby, but I come from a family that enjoys homemade food.

Yorkshire puds with pork and lamb? Shock

Hassled · 30/12/2010 21:58

:o at "I'm struggling the think of an emergency scenario which could be solved by a roast potato".

I'm thinking of some sort of dam-blocking scenario. Maybe pipes? Sometime, somewhere, there will be a hole into which only a roast potato will fit. And when that day comes, make damn sure it's not a frozen roast potato.

Blatherskite · 30/12/2010 21:58

The only thing less forgivable than frozen roasties is frozen Yorkshires!

Tesco substituted some (emergency) oven chips for frozen roasties once. They were vile.

Northernlebkuchen · 30/12/2010 21:59

Ok so it isn't what you would like - but it was food - get a grip and put up with it.

Poppity · 30/12/2010 21:59

Yanbu, it doesn't take much effort to do a roast properly anyway!

Sounds just like my in laws, there are only 2 potatoes each. I am not sure if this is a blessing or a curse.....

When they come to visit us for the day they stop on the way and buy prepacked sandwiches for themselves Shock

ifancyashandy · 30/12/2010 22:00

What if she / he can't cook and know they always burn the roasties?

My mum hates hates hates cooking roasts (so I now do Christmas dinner) and used to use M&S pre-prepared roasties. Not my fave but I glad we didn't have someone like you round judging her.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 30/12/2010 22:03

My Dad did Christmas at his house for the family this year, the first time since my mum died. He bought all of it from M & S (except the Christmas Pud, which DH made). When he told me what he was planning I was a bit Hmm and Bear as he can cook well and I thought homecooked food would be so superior in taste. Thank God I kept quiet. I was so WRONG. It was absolutely delicious. Sod the hours of peeling sprouts and spuds. I'm off to M & S.

Fernie3 · 30/12/2010 22:06

I bought potatoes in a foil tray from sainsburys they had a posh label and everything Grin had much more fun playing with the playmobil princess chest. Maybe they just didn't like your desert?

ClaireDeLoon · 30/12/2010 22:06

Early December I parboiled and froze some potatoes. Christmas Day DH and I lay in bed until noon then I roasted the FROZEN potatoes in goose fat to go with the turkey etc and they were lovely.

BalloonSlayer · 30/12/2010 22:14

Gosh no sorry McCain's Home Roasts are much better than real ones. With real ones there are always a couple that are soggy or burned. And guess who gets those? Ah yes, the person who was last to sit down because they were bloody well doing everything . . . um that'll be ME then. Angry

Aunt Bessie's are cack though. Actually the real reason I don't like them is they've got milk in.

mommmmyof2 · 30/12/2010 22:16

Reading your post made me think, and i was going to answer yes you are right you can't beat home made but it is there choice, but the more i thought about it the more i thought oh my that sounds like me!

I too have in laws that eat nothing but freezer food and when i went ages ago for dinner they served me a choice between boil potatoe out a tin or ...smash.

Now looking at your post i would have been a bit on the fence but i guess you do say things when they are closer to you.I did when the same happened to me Grin

igetmorelovefromthecat · 30/12/2010 22:18

Trying to figure out what kind of emergency would involve frozen roast potatoes.

But YANBU. Frozen veg is yuck.

fallingandlaughing · 30/12/2010 22:20

well my mil hates cooking so I can't begrudge her using all package stuff. When I am cooking I prefer to make from scratch... but when we hosted Christmas dinner it was an hour late, mil is always on time.

It is really up to the cook.

firstforthought · 30/12/2010 22:20

is it me or do frozen roast potatoes taste like homemade roast potatoes AFTER they have been reheated in the microwave? (not nice)

AliBellandthe40jingles · 30/12/2010 22:20

YANBU - frozen roast potatoes are vile.

Yes BoF - I too am horrified at the yorkshire pudding with pork and lamb scenario! For a start, why was there both pork AND lamb. That is weirdness.

BarbieLovesKen · 30/12/2010 22:21

You are being very, very, very unreasonable.

Some people just cant or dont like to cook. I dont think its a crime.

Some, like myself, arent into being the whole domestic Goddess type - I enjoy my career, studying and playing/ caring for/ talking to my dc. Cooking or baking just does not appeal to me, dh does most of that. If I do cook its more than likely from frozen.

How lovely to be invited to someones home for Christmas.

You baked a cake. Good for you.

firstforthought · 30/12/2010 22:21

ps its up to them if thats what they want.

charliesmommy · 30/12/2010 22:21

I would prefer home cooked, but maybe they arent confident cooks, and also wanted to do things quickly and easy so that they could spend more time out of the kitchen and with you.

VickstaS · 30/12/2010 22:22

I made some homemade mince pies and sausage rolls for my in laws one year. They were sneered at and comments made even a year later about how horrible they were. I meant them as a nice gesture and a way of contributing something to the meal. They took it as 'our stuffs not good enough for you so you brought your own'. It wasn't meant like that at all, but as my MIL doesn't cook at all and serves the cheapest stuff she can find, it was seen as 'i'm better than you are'.
Strangely, I haven't bothered to make the effort again. I suggest you don't either OP.

bupcakesandcunting · 30/12/2010 22:22

They probably chose the baggo value cake to put one in the eye of their poncey DIL...

YABVU and very judgemental. Fast forward and see how you would feel if your DIL judged you on your frozen roast potatoes/whatever. It's Christmas. About spending time with family not about spending hours preparing veg.

classydiva · 30/12/2010 22:24

I only ever eat frozen roast spuds.

Had them christmas day too. Aunt Bessies taste just like the real thing I doubt anyone would notice the difference.

We don't.

Each to their own, don't start disparaging those who do use them, some prefer them, we do.

OrangeMarmalade · 30/12/2010 22:24

YUKKKKK

Are your IL's terribly common ??

YANBU, it is the pits and the height of laziness. IMO

Xmas Grin
