To not like BIL snooping around our house

At ds's birthday party last month (dh's) BIL refused to use the downstairs guest bathroom & kept going upstairs to use the main bathroom - found this odd but fair enough , everyone else was happy to stay downstairs & use the bathroom . Later that night when everyone had gone home i noticed the attic door was fully open Hmm now this door is high up in the ceiling with no stair access so difficult to open (you would need to stand on the stair banister to get up there or get a ladder and the spare bedroom door was also open (junk room always locked )
We said nothing to Bil but now its DD's birthday party on Thursday & BIl will be here again & i am sooo tempted to bring it up in a jokey kind of manner ( something like "oh we must have some v strong mice in the attic as they are able to open the doors") but dh doesn't want me to .
What do you think ?

6 times in 90 minutes suggests he might have had diarrhoea and didn't want to use the same toilet everyone else was using because he was embarrassed about the smell? Possibly?

Not sure why that would involve going in the attic. Maybe he was looking for more loo roll.....

SparklyMartini · 28/12/2010 15:46

What is he like normally? Wanted by police?

I need you to get to the bottom of this, or it'll bug me!

SparklyMartini · 28/12/2010 15:50

I don't know though; are you sure, absolutely 100%, that it was him? I think you have to be before you do anything. Doors couldn't have been opened in some other way, for some really mundane reason that you or your dh then forgot about?

Or could your dh have opened them and doesn't want you to know why and that's why he'd rather you said nothing? Just speculating, no offense meant to your dh...

FrostyAndSlippery · 28/12/2010 15:52

That is so weird YANBU!

Agree you need to be absolutely sure it was him before making a direct comment - I prefer the idea of following him.

taintedsnow · 28/12/2010 15:52

Bowel issues would be one explanation, but surely if he needed to shit that much, he wouldn't have come to the house? And you would've, presumably, smelt something telling? Also doesn't explain why he went into the loft, most people don't shit there afterall....

Is he the type to be stashing something? Or is it possible he thinks you have something worth stealing up there? If DH doesn't want to confront him, could he possibly know something you don't? Sorry, don't want to be negative, just spinning scenarios!

I also really need to know what's going on here, it's like the mysterious lump of meat from a while back!

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2010 15:56

getting on this thread
Please go with Hec's idea - but warn your DH first!

Lotkinsgonecurly · 28/12/2010 16:01

BIL's are just plain odd sometimes. I managed to have my BIL screaming at me on Christmas Day, threatening not to come to my Mum's because he was feeling too sensitive. ( I was thrilled at the thought of him not coming). Unfortunately he did though. He's just stayed here for 6 days and now gone home, the relief is indescribable!

ledkrsbellyislikesantas · 28/12/2010 16:10

off the subject but ils are weird full stop, sil is currently having a tantrum cos i said she cant bring her massive bull dog to stay 5 days after my baby is born by section.
I dont like dogs, esp around babies and will bearly feel like putting up 3 adults in my small hosue never mind a dog.Aparently i am "putting baby before the dog" um well yeah!
When is the party, can we all come?

SantasENormaSnob · 28/12/2010 16:12

6 times in 90 mins Xmas Shock

is he snorting coke up there? My bil has done this Hmm

ledkrsbellyislikesantas · 28/12/2010 16:12

tainted-tell me about the "lump of meat"

ledkrsbellyislikesantas · 28/12/2010 16:14

but more likely to do coke off the bathroom surfaces than stood with head in the attic.
And 6 times in 90 mins is he pete doherty?

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2010 16:16

make sure you offer round the pom bears

taintedsnow · 28/12/2010 16:17

I can't find the thread ledkr, but it was an MNer who had a roast dinner chucked over the fence, not sure if it was ever resolved though (was very reminiscent of a scene from The Osbournes!).

elinorbellowed · 28/12/2010 16:18

Has your DH inherited an item that he and SIL think should be theirs? Or an item that they've recently discovered is worth something? This is weird behaviour. Is he normally curious?

SantasENormaSnob · 28/12/2010 16:20

My bil is worse than pete doherty unfortunately and his activities are far from limited to bathroom surfaces Xmas Shock

ledkrsbellyislikesantas · 28/12/2010 16:29

tainted-a whole roast haha, people really do funny things dont they?
This is really bugging me now,i almost want soemone to do it in my house so i can do the hanging guy thing.

SantasENormaSnob · 28/12/2010 16:33

Me too ledkr.

Thinking nye Xmas Grin

tulpe · 28/12/2010 16:36

do you think BIL is possibly having an affair? Perhaps he was in attic and spare room trying to get a signal on his phone for illicit texting etc?

glub · 28/12/2010 16:36

secretly film him? i know that's the only thing i would be working on doing!

TheParasiteofChristmasPast · 28/12/2010 16:37

maybe he is on ali - is he a heifer? not sure about the attic bit, maybe he wanted to stuff some insulation down his knickers to absorb the fatty excrement?

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 28/12/2010 16:38

makes me think secret smoker/drug taker/talking to secret girlfriend on phone - though why he needed to do attic/spare room as well as bathroom has me wondering about other scenarios too...

biggirlsdontcry · 28/12/2010 16:40

OK I'll try answer a few questions before i go back to deep cleaning the dc's bedroom (make them nice for Bil to go snooping Wink)
Yes Sil & Bil are a bit strange tbh , they are both in their 50's with grown up kids .
No drugs involved as far as i know but he is a heavy drinker . She's tea total .
Dh is a carpenter as is Bil so dh reckons Bil was trying to find his tools to see what he has & maybe ask to borrow some Hmm could be that but why go to all that bother to get up into the attic ? He could have just asked Confused .
By the way the door was left wide open it looked as though maybe he was disturbed & had to make a quick get away .
Yes you can all come to the party & watch/follow Bil for me if you like Grin

ledkrsbellyislikesantas · 28/12/2010 16:45

surely could have waited for 90 mins to text gf tho? This is hilarious we have him down as gangster no 1 and hes probably just a nosey twunt.

ledkrsbellyislikesantas · 28/12/2010 16:48

is it a door or a hatch? Does sil or bil know what you keep in there? What is the dress code for the party Grin

tulpe · 28/12/2010 16:50

ledkrs - not if GF is some kind of bunny boiler though who is threatening to tell wife/end her life if he doesn't reply immediately thereby demonstrating that she is the all important one....... :o (guess who re-watched Fatal Attraction recently :o )
