I see it more and more often in aibu.

"to of eaten this"

"to of gone out today"

To give a couple of examples.

OMG xstitch

But she might have a point if to, too & two all mean the sameGrin

usualsuspect · 27/12/2010 15:41

Jade80 I think its even more of a shame that the grammar police could put some people off posting on MN . I couldn't care less how people post on an internet forum ..Its not important Smile

BubbaAndBump · 27/12/2010 15:43

I'll join in the head banging with you xstitch - teachers have a duty to be correct with grammar and spelling (and I'm one of them, so I try to make sure I double check anything I'm not sure of).

ExpatAgain · 27/12/2010 15:45

yanbu and you are not being the grammar police, it does really grate..

MumsieNonna · 27/12/2010 15:59

Oh yes, that unknown verb to 'of'. It really rubs me up the wrong way too. Don't get me started on its and it's.

YANBU. Mumsie runs away to Pendants' corner.

diddl · 27/12/2010 16:05

What I don´t understand is that surely you write have or´ve so often it becomes ingrained.

So how does it get to of?

Or is it accepted txt spk?

CoteDAzur · 27/12/2010 16:05

YANBU. If they are old enough to have children, they should have the capacity to learn and remember to write "have".

autodidact · 27/12/2010 16:07

It is extremely grating. I tend to assume people who use it haven't had much education or are dyslexic though and so try to move on from my involuntary wince of horror.

usualsuspect · 27/12/2010 16:15

I'm sure the op from the original thread knows the difference now

How horrible to start a thread about someones mistakes and then all join in with the slagging off

vesuvia · 27/12/2010 16:16

It's almost as annoying as Old Etonian politicians saying "gonna" instead of "going to".

Where can one obtain a decent education nowadays?

CoteDAzur · 27/12/2010 16:17

I haven't seen the original thread but now they know better. RL friends were probably wincing for years and never got the nerve to tell them. It's not a bad thing that MN did.

usualsuspect · 27/12/2010 16:19

I'm sure her RL friends don't give a fuck

They probably do give a "fuck", unless, of course, they are just as ignorant free of the rules of spelling and grammar, not to mention the meaning of the word "of".

CountryDweller · 27/12/2010 16:32

Some of us don't give two hoots. (Yes thats two, not too or even to) There is more important things in life to get worked up about. Xmas Smile

FellatioNelson · 27/12/2010 16:32

YARNB to be irritated by it, but unless it was ny own DCs I would not point it out directly to anyone.

FellatioNelson · 27/12/2010 16:33

Sorry that was very garbled and full of typos!

amijee · 27/12/2010 16:42

If this is actually a genuine post ( which i doubt) then what an incredibly snobbish thing to say.

So now the only people who should use mumsnet need to be educated to a certain standard?

There are all sorts of people from all educational backgrounds using this forum. How dare anyone criticise or even point out their grammatical or spelling errors? You can save that for your own kids.

No wonder mn is criticised for being so middle classed.

TrillianAstra · 27/12/2010 16:43

You are talking about "the original thread" as if it happened once and this is a personal attack.

It happens a lot, and people should know the difference. If they don't know how to say it correctly they should want to, IMO.

amijee · 27/12/2010 16:47

"If they don't know how to say it correctly they should want to, IMO"

If people want to improve their english, isn't up to them to attend some classes in it rather than have it shoved down their throats by some superior people?

southeastastra · 27/12/2010 16:48

blimey isn't there anything more interesting to discuss than this??

CoteDAzur · 27/12/2010 16:49

Who on earth would "attend a class" to correct their mistakes in ONE word? Hmm A mistake that they are not even aware of, in all likelihood???

amijee · 27/12/2010 16:52

I think most people would be aware if there were gaps in their education - especially the 3 R's.

Udderly · 27/12/2010 16:52

Someone sent me a work email once telling me about a 'pacific' product!

SantaClausImWorthIt · 27/12/2010 16:56

Don't need to attend a class, they can learn it here for free!

I hate it.

I also loathe it when people use 'your' instead of 'you're'.

I know it's just an internet forum, and we all make all kinds of mistakes because we're posting quickly - but these betray a lack of basic grammar.

Sorry if people don't like it being pointed out.
