I see it more and more often in aibu.

"to of eaten this"

"to of gone out today"

To give a couple of examples.

OP posts:
Katisha · 27/12/2010 13:30

Have course!

I of seen the light.

nightmarebeforechristmas · 27/12/2010 13:32

yanbu for not liking it, but why start a thread, grow up ffs

HecTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 27/12/2010 13:33

Yes. It's a bit irritating.

How much of it is the education system / the parents / the parents' education?

People are not born knowing these things. If someone truly does not know when it is 'have', when it is 'of', the difference between they're, their and there, and so on and so forth, then somewhere along the line they have been let down.

And not everyone has the, erm, er, ability? to recognise that they are making such mistakes, so I don't think there's much point being annoyed with them about it.

Maybe MN should introduce a written english test before anyones allowed to join?

Must be awful, all the angst it causes the highly educated on here

I think the op should count herself lucky that she has time to get annoyed about grammatical errors.
And yes I made this error on the thread I started, bows out out slowly backwards begging for forgiveness Xmas Wink

ChippingIn · 27/12/2010 13:46

There should be a message when you join MN - telling people where to find smug pedants corner!!

claig · 27/12/2010 13:51

I of erd said that even the Labour manifesto was rife with such errors. That is one of the many reasons I of not voted for them for some time. Some say they should never of got rid of Chris Woodhouse.

Animation · 27/12/2010 13:54

Oh, for God's sakes - go and have a turkey sandwiche.Hmm

Animation · 27/12/2010 13:59

Yes, definately pedants corner - or, "I am rather too pleased with my goodness and intelligence" corner.

Binfullofgibletsonthe45 · 27/12/2010 14:15

I wonder if I could ask the first few posters to check their spelling, typos and open brackets please?

Xmas Grin

Hey - I didn't start it!

Binfullofgibletsonthe45 · 27/12/2010 14:18

Mmmmm turkei sanwitch .....with pickalilee. Yum...

I concur!

sue52 · 27/12/2010 14:48

I find it rude when self appointed grammar experts point out errors.

sparkle12mar08 · 27/12/2010 14:54

I hate it too but never point it out on a thread. I have bben known to correct a there/they're/their mistake on occasion though. Hec's right, the education system has badly failed those who can't distinguish or understand such basic concepts though.

coco2901 · 27/12/2010 14:56

YANBU it's almost as annoying as 'brought' instead of 'bought'

GabbyLoggon · 27/12/2010 14:58

we all have our little grammatical irks. I dont like invite for invitation. it sounds wrong but some educated geezers use it.

I don't get why people get funny about having bad grammar and spelling pointed out. If I'm doing something wrong, I want to know so I can avoid doing it wrong in an important situation.

It isn't 'wrong to point it out all the bloody time'. It surely only needs to be pointed out once to an individual, then they'll know for the future anyway. If no-one pointed it out at school that's a shame, but doesn't mean it is necessary for someone to go through life unaware of the error, simply because no-one bothered or dared (for fear of an aggressive response like usual suspects) to point it out.

diddl · 27/12/2010 15:17

OP-YANBU to find it annoying.

How can people with English as a first language get it wrong?

classydiva · 27/12/2010 15:19

Get a life, there are far more important things in life to fret about, and how people write on the internet is not one of them.

People like you really bake my noodles, if you can understand what they mean what is your problem?

senua · 27/12/2010 15:29

YANBU.

As others have said, if a thread title or opening posting have glaring errors then I usually Judge but bite my tongue and trot on. I take the attitude that if they can't be bothered to communicate properly then I can't be bothered to communicate back.
I'll let you decide whose loss that is.Grin

diddl · 27/12/2010 15:29

"and how people write on the internet is not one of them."

Is it internet slang then?

Thank goodness for that-I thought some people were mixing up have & of.

xstitchsnowscene · 27/12/2010 15:33

Not as annoyed as I am with dd's teacher after she told her 'of' and 'off' mean exactly the same.
