Women only buy music because of how artist/band looks.

AIBU to think that the looks of an artist/band is a major factor when it comes to the music buying of (most) women?
I have to say that looks/sex appeal does not enter into it for men- yes, they may feel Kylie is v. v. attractive with a nice bottom, but there is no way they'd buy her album on the basis of that.
The X Factor last night made it this clear to me- Matt Cardle is a handsome, pleasant enough seeming guy certainly but he is very karaoke, isn't he? (I am assuming that the majority of his voters were female) James Blunt is the same.
I reckon that women buy into looks when it comes to musical purchasing and not particular talent. AIBU?

yes

Parsgirl · 13/12/2010 13:41

Well you are if you are talking about me cause I don't. I have a Proclaimers album in my collection Wink

Hassledge · 13/12/2010 13:42

I am a massive fan of Elvis Costello, but I wouldn't want to shag the man. Ditto Van Morrison.

And of the newer stuff I like - mostly I don't even know what they look like. I don't watch MTV or anything - I hear something on the radio, or my DCs introduce me. And tbh I tend to prefer female vocalists, but am straight, so no, your argument doesn't work at all I'm afraid.

Vallhala · 13/12/2010 13:42

Erm... can someone explain my liking for Prince, The Jam and Oasis then? Hmm

Admittedly I'm a big fan of The Boss too, but imho that he is seriously HOT is just a fortunate extra. :o

GlynistheMincePie · 13/12/2010 13:43

most definately

Hmm

and i think you are wrong about men not buying music by women they fancy.

i'm sure my DH does listen to all those Kate Bush cds...just not sure where Wink

nickeldonkeycarrymary · 13/12/2010 13:45

no, i go on the sound of the song.

waitwhat · 13/12/2010 13:45

I am a huge rock fan and most of the people on my Ipod are not that attractive lol

However i was forced to watch this series Of X factor thanks to Ds1 who insisted it be on the telly - I voted for Matt because i totally would....Xmas Grin

Ormirian · 13/12/2010 13:45

Some women might do. But that's their problem if they are then landed with a load of crap music to listen to.

backwardpossom · 13/12/2010 13:45

YABVU, but you knew that...

waitwhat · 13/12/2010 13:47

My dh swear blind the only reason girls aloud videos are on his Iphone is because he likes the choreography Xmas Hmm

AmazingBouncingFerret · 13/12/2010 13:48

I go on the basis of if I like the song, I'll listen to it, dont give a toss what the artist looks like.

No idea what this Matt bloke looks like because ive managed to avoid X Factor this year.

PaisleyLeaf · 13/12/2010 13:48

No, I don't think so. I even have music by artists I've never seen.

X-factor is a different thing. It's not about the music. They're looking for a marketable package. So looks/backstory etc are a part of it.

hogfather · 13/12/2010 13:49

YABU!

My personal CD collection ranges from Nirvana to the Beatles to Faure and back to Bon Jovi, Lou Reed incoporating muscials, Michael Ball and Lady Gaga on the way.

If I didnt like the music there is no way I would buy an album even if it was the cutest bottom on the front - I would just buy a poster instead Wink

Funnily enough I've never considered whether I think Mozart is fitter than Beethoven ...

marantha · 13/12/2010 13:50

I don't think I'm being that unreasonable-look at the boy bands we have. Anyway, I mean it as applying to a lot of women, not all.

OTheHugeManatee · 13/12/2010 13:51

You're absolutely right. Men never make judgements about a woman's value based on her appearance, do they?

Women are much shallower.

Hmm
marantha · 13/12/2010 13:52

Glynis Kate Bush is seriously talented -the looks are just an added extra.

Yes, I like Midlake and Fleet Foxes purely because of their beards. Infact I don't buy any music from anyone unless they have a beard. Wink

AbsofCroissant · 13/12/2010 13:53

Bumps - Mozart is waaaaaaaaaaaaay hotter than Beethoven. Have you not seen the movie?

Generally, when buying music, I tend to go by what it sounds like. Revolutionary I know.

marantha · 13/12/2010 13:53

OTheHugeManatee, I am not saying that men do not judge women on looks. Far from it-just that I do not think they will buy a female artist's record just because she is attractive.

kenobi · 13/12/2010 13:53

If you're looking at boy bands as an example, then you're not talking about women buying music because of the way bands look, you're talking about tweenies, who are most boy bands' predominant audience. That's an entirely different kettle of fish.

Tortington · 13/12/2010 13:53

two words

WAND ERECTION

squirrel42 · 13/12/2010 13:54

Is this along the same line as the stereotype about how women buy cars - they go for cute looking models or by what colour it is, while men assess things by the performance and how it handles?
