Women only buy music because of how artist/band looks.

AIBU to think that the looks of an artist/band is a major factor when it comes to the music buying of (most) women?
I have to say that looks/sex appeal does not enter into it for men- yes, they may feel Kylie is v. v. attractive with a nice bottom, but there is no way they'd buy her album on the basis of that.
The X Factor last night made it this clear to me- Matt Cardle is a handsome, pleasant enough seeming guy certainly but he is very karaoke, isn't he? (I am assuming that the majority of his voters were female) James Blunt is the same.
I reckon that women buy into looks when it comes to musical purchasing and not particular talent. AIBU?

You may be right when it comes to the audience of the X Factor but I don't think you are right about women in general. I suspect that X Factor audiences are also the types that like Boy Bands which are similar on the talent/looks scale.

I would have thought that sort of woman just one small group - I reckon it exists but most of us have more complex tastes than that!

I also don't know what half the people in my record collection actually look like and some of the ones I do know I certainly didn't buy for their looks!

LadyWellian · 13/12/2010 14:07

Am frankly boggling at this. Most of the new music I buy is stuff I've heard on the radio and I don't generally have a clue what the artist/band looks like. I wouldn't recognise a member of Kasabian if I tripped over them in the street.

OP, YABU.

DD voted for Matt in X Factor based on voice rather than looks (surely if it had been an image thing, a 10yo would have gone for One Direction?). Is Matt meant to be sexy?

We were not sorry he won. Rebecca might be easier on the eye but Matt was the better singer.

MollysChambers · 13/12/2010 14:07

I do think that sometimes you are attracted to blokes because you like their music when perhaps you wouldn't give them a second look otherwise.

But the music comes first.

giveitago · 13/12/2010 14:08

Don't agree - but then again if you buy music soley as you want to shag artist then ok.

The majority of women, I would imagine, buy music as they like it - (so they want to shag female artists do they). Oh goodness. Or perhaps if a women wants to buy a fabulous female siger - then what. Perhaps there are NO female musicians (???????) Last 4 albums I've purchased are by female artists - certainly don't go on their looks.

Oddest post I've ever seen.

DuelingFanio · 13/12/2010 14:09

kenobi I do like a bit of beard. His is fantastic

CatIsSleepy · 13/12/2010 14:10

pubescent girls, maybe. I would like to think that actual fully grown women listen to music, because, well, they like the music

most of the stuff I listen to I don't know what the bands look like tbh

LBsmumblingxmascarols · 13/12/2010 14:10

YABVU - how patronising to women, I don't give a hoot what someone looks like, its the music counts

news flash X Factor doesnt equal music
X factor equals xmas bonanzar for Simon Cowells bank balence

What an annoying assumpion,

Poo stick to Blunt too

marantha · 13/12/2010 14:12

Niecie, yeah, I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Lady Wellian - Serge from Kasabian is oddly attractive in an acquired taste kinda way. Tom...not so much. And yet strangely I still love their music. Go figure...

marantha · 13/12/2010 14:13

LadyWellian. I cannot agree that Matt is better singer. Not for a second. He is flat and horribly out of tune and has been for past couple of weeks.

NadiaWadia · 13/12/2010 14:15

YABU It's all about the music for any sane person, surely? Are you saying women appreciate music less?

And if anyone were to buy the music based on looks, I should think men would be more likely to do that. Not saying they're shallow or anything ....

BTW DD had X Factor on last night and I thought this Matt Cardle was very ordinary looking indeed, and his voice was fairly ordinary sounding as well.

AMumInScotland · 13/12/2010 14:17

Since when have boy bands or X Factor been about music?

PURPLESWAN · 13/12/2010 14:18

"girls" maybe but "women" really....how depressing.

My taste in music is 98% based on songwriting and voice, looks would be a 2% bonus.

I guess that would explain why so much sh*t is so successful...and am very proud not to be a part of it Grin

When companies like sony started buying out the "proper" record companies I can remember saying it would be to the detriment of music because it became totally about profit.

Stock Aitken & Waterman put another nail in the coffin and Simon Cowell is continuing the trend.

All I can say is if you are aware that you ARE being maninpulated in this way...shut your eyes, open your ears and get some taste before its too late!

giveitago · 13/12/2010 14:19

Women obviously have no appreciation of music I suppose. Who the feck is matt. The last three bits of music I bought were classical guitar solos - to compliment my rap stuff. But then again, I'm female so obviously want to shag these spanish guitar soloists who are long dead.

How odd.

Thing is I think I'm the average woman.

Again odd (aka fucking shite) post.

PURPLESWAN · 13/12/2010 14:25

Matt is one of the many people from the hideous x factor who are incapable of singing, look OK and will be working in Butlins in 6 months tim, Simon Cowell of course will be even richer.

Real music fans, who you know BUY lots of CDs dont watch it which is why it basically falls flat.

Its watched by people who like celebrity on the whole rather than music lovers.

Portofino · 13/12/2010 14:29

Personally I buy stuff via iTunes and have no CLUE what any of the bands look like anymore. I could be sat next to the Kaiser Chiefs or Snow Patrol on the bus and not have a danny. I like their albums though.

badcoverversion · 13/12/2010 14:32

I thought about this and realised that I do rather fancy a lot of the boys I listen to... Yannis from Foals, Devendra Banhart, Sufjan Stevens, Perfume Genius, Andrew Bird, Noah Lennox from Animal Collective/Panda Bear and the fit Indian fella from Yeasayer...I even dig on dead hotties like Gram Parsons.

But can I just say that Matt Curdle is a sweaty, pasty, candy floss haired pub singer and about as sexually alluring as a battered, sodden fanny.

iPaddle · 13/12/2010 14:36

More men than women vote on Xfactor.

giveitago · 13/12/2010 14:41

Yep with portofino - I'm buying what I like Given there was a lag with technology and my age I'm there buying old stuff (talking 70's and 80's) and just catching up with technology.

I do know my music but I was young in the '80s and early '90's and it makes me sad that the op is basically saying that women know jack shit about music. I'd say the oppositite. I'm a late 80-'S and early 90's woman and I find it offensive that women criticise other famale choice on music. We individually like what we like.

Perhaps OP is just talking about herself.

kenobi · 13/12/2010 14:44

narky puffin, good point well made.

Duellingfanjo - where do you stand on the BeeGees?!

I liked Matt X Factor's voice, it's very Bono from U2. But I don't want to have sex with him, his head is too big for his body which always freaks me right out.

AbsofCroissant · 13/12/2010 14:46

Thinking on this - the musicians I have had crushes on, it's more followed from the music. E.g. male muso writes very beautiful song, I hear it, buy it, then after multiple listenings develop a crush.

Anyway, the OP is rubbish and is clearly mixing up "13 y/o girls" with "women".

BonniePrinceBilly · 13/12/2010 14:46

Did I miss the memo about this being moronic AIBU posts day?

LadyWellian · 13/12/2010 14:51

marantha we only watched it yesterday (under pressure from DD) so I can't comment on the rest of the series. But Rebecca was really off key, particularly in the quiet bits. It's all relative and I certainly won't be buying any records on the back of X Factor.
