I think it's getting totally out of hand. I think that HE should be accesable but that's what the students loan company is for-no? i have no money; I have a student loan. When I start to earn enough again I shall continue to pay it back.
I have no problem with demos but attacking a car etc is not helping the cause.

Why make such a promise then if he could never keep it janello? It wasn't a surprise that we were operating with a deficit. The spending of every department is publicly available every year in their published accounts as are the debt figures. It's just whether or not you can be bothered to find them.

nightmarebeforechristmas · 11/12/2010 12:10

riv I agree I wish people would realise they are only a car crash away.

christmaseve · 11/12/2010 12:14

All these policies are turning peoples opinions. I am not in the least bit perturbed about people paying for their childs education. I have friends who send their kids to the local indie, they can afford it so why not. Our comp is a good school and their results are similar. I always told DD that once you get over 18 it will be a level playing field. However I couldn't help thinking that due to the level of tuition fees, a family who can afford to pay school fees can quite easily help support a student to keep down the maintenance loans.

On the current sytem this wasn't such a problem to take the loans for accommodation, the bursary system that has also been withdrawn, might have kept it down but it will escalate the debt now.

SCL is correct. Once a child reaches 18 then all support is withdrawn, CB, Maintenance, Tax credits all the help that kept a family home running for the low paid. I will just be able to support myself and keep the home together but won't have a penny over to send to DD to help with her living costs. I will if I sell my home and move into a small flat and I'm seriously considering doing this. This could reduced her debts down by 20K to 50K Angry.

janello · 11/12/2010 12:20

He said it to get elected and bercause so many people seem to live in a dream world they believe politicians when they make promises even if its clear they won't be able to keep them.

christmaseve · 11/12/2010 12:23

Cameron promised not to touch EMA but they lied about that. Forgot to add EMA to the list of help, still waiting to hear officially that they are taking that off DD next summer. I know it's gone for new applicants.

Are people not forgetting that is a coalition government. During the election Cable said that nothing would uncuttable, the tories have kept some of their ringfences but have had to concede others

Igglystuffedfullofturkey · 11/12/2010 13:06

Sorry but why bother to vote then if you don't get what you expected from your choice? Politicians should remember they're paid out of the public purse and are there to serve the voting public not screw us over.

christmaseve · 11/12/2010 13:15

In our constituency the labour candidate gets so few votes that it's a 2 horse race between Lib Dem and Tory. We vote Lib Dem to keep the tory out as a labour vote is a wasted vote. I respect our Lib Dem candidate, he works hard but we are starting to think that a the Lib Dem vote was now the wasted one.

happystressedmum · 11/12/2010 14:30

Typical tories - keep the rich richer and thall the poor poorer. Clegg should be sacked for lying and betraying all those people who vted for the Libs who promised NOT to raise tuition fees. Its disgusting!

I dont condone violence but if the demonstrations were peaceful it wouldnt have got the coverage.

if the tories asked all their banker and other rich friends (Sir Philip Green) to pay their taxes and not hide their money in off shore accounts they could wipe the alledged deficit!

mumzy · 11/12/2010 15:11

IMO the people responsible for all of this mess are the politicians and all the parties need to take their proportion of the blame.

labour because they dumbed down the education system and allowed people to believe 50% of the population should go to university knowing full well it could only be funded (along with tax credits and other pet projects) if they continue to get the big tax revenues paid by bank taking mad risks in the financial markets. In order to ensure they continue to get these taxes they they deregulated them and egged them on. The conservatives for protecting the mega rich tax dodgers instead they should be making them pay their fair share of taxes then maybe we would'nt have to triple university fees. The lib dems for making promises which they knew even before the election that in the real world they couldn't keep and for getting into power under false pretences.

If there was an honest politician out there they should tell the public the truth which is we as a country can't afford to fund 50% of population to go to university to study whatever you like, but we can afford to fund say 20% to study subjects which this country needs to stay competitive. So 70% of the total funding will be given to sciences, medicine & maths and 30% to arts and social sciences. It will take a generation for the benefits to be felt and as such probably would'nt be of interest to any politician who can't see beyond the next general election

WingDad · 11/12/2010 15:17

I support the fact that they have the right to protest, and I think it's quite good that they are exercising that right.

However, the riots are totally unacceptable. It's counter-productive for the peaceful protests that are going on, and draws attention away from the real message.

And the absolute dick who was photographed swinging from the flags on the Cenotaph deserves to have his face smashed in. Just saying...

Abr1de · 11/12/2010 15:25

Why shouldn't we get uptight about damage to property? It's public property which the tax payer will have to replace. That's our council tax and income tax.

Desiderata · 11/12/2010 15:28

Quite right! If those goons are the future of the country, then I'm glad they ain't getting funded by it.

Igglystuffedfullofturkey · 11/12/2010 16:33

"If those goons are the future of the country"

What were you like as a teenager? Angelic? Model of society?

How ridiculous to write off a whole generation because of the actions of a few.

UnquietDad · 11/12/2010 17:09

I wonder how many people who go on demos actually know how to contact their MP and put their views in writing? There's no excuse now for not doing so. You can email your MP for free. It depresses me how few people even know who their MP is or what party he/she is from.

Plus there is an unpleasant streak of robotic bash-the-toffs tribalism in the current spate of riots. Where were the crowds on the streets against the anti-libertarian measures brought in by Labour?

UnquietDad if anyone, anywhere, has ever got a satisfactory reply to an MP letter I'll eat my shoes.

and personally i'd rather have student riots than EDL (English Defence League) ones.

melezka · 11/12/2010 17:19

I wrote my MP. You know that saying about peeing yourself in a dark suit?

tiredemma · 11/12/2010 17:22

I feel so angry (probably irrationally so) at the sight of that scrawny, spoilt brat swinging from the Cenotaph. So angry.

What is to be gained from behaving like an absolute fucking moron?
