To cook spuds in goose fat for vegi BIL at xmas

MeMudmagnet · 30/11/2010 11:30

I'd imagine most vegi's would think IABVU?

DH's family are with us for Christmas. They'll be 11 of us to cook for and BIL with obviously need something to replace the Turkey, no problem.
He'll also need separate gravy, hardly any bother.
I usually make a couple of stuffings and make sure one is meat free, again, no bother.
He also likes to have some vegi sausages to replace the pigs in blankets.

I like to do a good job with xmas dinner and I love doing the spuds in goose fat.
I ponder over this every time we have them for xmas. It's a PITA having to pretty much cook a separate vegi dinner alongside a traditional one, find space in the oven and get all the timings right.

Would it really hurt, for one day, if he was unknowingly more flexible?

The rest of the year when we see them, I just make something vegi for all of us, but this is xmas dinner and I like going to town a bit.

So;
a. Would he notice?
b. Would it be really, really bad?

YABVU, but I am FAR more [shocked] at his wife for saying it was okay to do so - what a F'ing bitch she is Shock

as already said, it could make him very ill (ife long Veggie DH was once in a hell of a state when he was accidently given the wrong Chilli in a pubHmm & he only ate a few forkfuls

if you really can't be bothered to do vegge ones too, then I'm sure he;d be much happier you were honest & let him make the decision himself, I know I would

[clasps Getorf to bosom to protect from trollhunters]

there there.....

MilkNoSugarPlease · 30/11/2010 12:17

Snort @ the thought of GetOrf being a troll :o

RockinRobinBird · 30/11/2010 12:18

YABU to do it and not tell him but he is BU to rock up and expect you to cook a whole separate christmas dinner given the other 11 guests and one oven. Any chance he could make his own and bring them to be warmed up? That's what I would do

And bitch/cunt? Some of you need to cool your heels a bit. God knows what you'd say if it was actually a life threatening situation. You'd explode.

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/11/2010 12:18

Yes agree quint OP should just cook a christmas dinner (with seperate spuds) and if he doesn't like anything, he just leaves it.

I did make stepson a nut roast one year, I burnt it and the kitchen stank of burnt brazil nuts for about 2 days. And he didn't eat it.

Vegan is incredibly hard to cater for - there seems to be dairy product in everything, including bread of all things.

Mind you, at least all my haribos are safe (every cloud)

Lizbertnobacon · 30/11/2010 12:18

QS - it is horrible to feed a vegetarian meat or animal products knowingly and not to tell them. It is not horrible to not cater for someones dietary preferences. So what op is suggesting is horrible!

QuintessentialShadows · 30/11/2010 12:19

vegan friendly pom bears anyone?

AbsofCroissant · 30/11/2010 12:20

GOML's a troll Shock

Wow. that is some rather dedicated trolling going on there. Good work.

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/11/2010 12:20

waaaa they're calling me a troll.

I'll FLOUNCE next

I had no idea by the way that vegetarians could get ill from eating meat after a while. I will have to tell stepson. He got pissed as a newt in the summer and woke up surrounded by empty nandos bags. He was mortified. Grin

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 30/11/2010 12:20

Back in the day, when I was vegetarian, I'd have enjoyed the spuds in blissful ignorance.

if I suspected they'd been cooked in goose fat, I'd utilise my excellent denial skills and reason with myself that no animal died to give them to me - since the cook would be using the same quantity of fat anyway.

I don't think you should do it. But to consider it doesn't make you a bitch or a twat or anything else for that matter.

Get some Aunt Bessies. That'll learn him. Grin

pastaplease · 30/11/2010 12:22

YABVU. Incredibly callous and rude.

As someone else has said, groundnut oil is the best for roast potatoes anyway.

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 30/11/2010 12:24

Groundnut oil is good for crispy crunchiness, but for flavour and delicious gooiness you need animal fat. I usually do some roaties around the joint/bird, and some in a separate tin in groundnut oil. Best of both worlds.

Well, if you're doing MN Bingo, you can give yourself a point!

I did this to my veggie sister and BIL last year. The whole family brought something to the meal except them so I thought they deserved it.

(Ducks and hides...)

susitwoshoes · 30/11/2010 12:28

DP is a very strict veggie, he always gets a bit embarrassed when people do something fancy for him alongside a roast - he's more than happy with the veg and some veggie gravy from granules.

As it's family, and it's just one day - could you not do your roast spuds NOT in goose fat - I've actually never had them in goose fat but I've also never had a grim, non-goose fat roast spud - would this be an utter disaster for you? And just do one veggie stuffing? And sod the sausages? I mean, would your world fall apart?

ItalianLady · 30/11/2010 12:29

If you are happy to cook other stuffing, other meat, other sausages, why not other potatoes?

YABU and disrespectful.

fayc84 · 30/11/2010 12:29

I cooked Christmas dinner for my whole family for the first time last year and totally forgot about the goosefat when cooking the roast spuds and promptly served them up to my veggie mum. Half way through she asked if they were cooked in goosefat and I admitted my mistake - had made her something different to replace turkey but totaly forgot that the potatoes wouldn't be suitable - and she just said 'oooh, you can tell, they're lovely' before helping herself to some more!

I reckon if there's no space in your oven for a whole extra set for BIL then just tell him how you've cooked them and let him decide, or offer extra sprouts instead. Sounds like you're planning to cook plenty to fill him up anyway.

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/11/2010 12:30

I have done all those on your list except the flounce and deflounce.

Think roast spuds need to be cooked in some animal fat - they are not the same in oil imo.

I cooked chicken liver pate once and dstepson was utterly disgusted at the sight of it, bless him.

jessiealbright · 30/11/2010 12:30

Why not do ALL the potatoes as vegetarian ones?

FindingMyMojo · 30/11/2010 12:30

if he eats suet he'll probably eat goose fat - can't you just ask him though?

5DollarShake · 30/11/2010 12:30

Goose fat has such a distinctive taste, which is why I don't use it to roast potatoes, even though I'm not and never will be veggie. To me, it tastes like old chip fat. Obviously if he has never had it, he wouldn't recognise the taste, but still, it seems a risky move.

bupcakesandcunting · 30/11/2010 12:30

What's with all the calling the OP a bitch and a cunt?

Her BIL is a vegetarian not a vegan, right? So I am assuming he probably wears leather shoes, eats sweets and cheeses with animal by-product in, drinks milk from sad cows and all manner of shit. OP was suggesting giving him a bit of goose fat, not force-feeding him a side of a cow.

For the record, DH is a veggie but acknowledges that animal by-product is present in a lot of foods so doesn't kick up a stink if I crumble a chicken OXO into the gravy. Thank fuck he isn't as precious as half of the drama queens on here.

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/11/2010 12:32

I only cook a roast dinner about twice a year, so oose or duck fat spuds are sacrosant.

skydance · 30/11/2010 12:33

You can't give him the goose fat ones, that would just be really nasty, he would definately be able to taste it.

If you can't fit vege ones in the oven on the day what about cooking a few the night before and then microwaving them to heat up. Same with the vege sausage actually. Yes they wouldn't taste quite as good but much better than giving the goose fat ones.

If I were your BIL I'd just have the plain pots/mash and veg, I wouldn't expect anything extra that would be plenty.

The christmas pud is a bit different, are you sure it wasn't vege, most are nowadays, but even if not he wouldn't have been able to taste the animal product in it like he will be able to with goose fat pots. (although I wouldn't have eaten it, but I can see where he's coming from there)

I think he is expecting a bit much, but I suspose if you've offered he thinks it's ok, I was a bit Shock at the seperate pigs in blankets that he's asked for though!

Please don't give him the goose fat ones I would be so upset you are completly betraying his trust.
