To be irritated by Mil dressing DD2 in DD1's clothes

I know it's another Mil moan, sorry - but for heavens sake, DD2 is 20months, and DD1 is 3.5.

I was away yesterday and DP went to pick them up from his parents, who had been looking after them. The kids usually have tea there before coming home, and MIL gets them changed into their pyjamas for the car journey home, as they fall asleep there, and then by the time they get in, it's straight to bed.

So coming home today I find DD1's age 3-4 pj's strewn in DD2's cot. DP said that was indeed what she came home in. DD1 has also, at other times, been dressed in her pj's to go out, and put in daywear for sleeping in. Basically I'm thinking of putting labels on everything, but is that petty?

I dressed my 2 year old in his 6 year old brother's pyjamas last night and it was fine

Your mother in law does childcare. Be thankful and possibly gratefuly. I dressed dd in ds's clothes until she was girly enough for it to be noticed - splashed out on pink socks though so if people were interested they might see she was a girl. [embarassed]

However, just roll your eyes and let her alone - she loves the girls and is helping you out and she's not doing any harm.

You could always get them some PJ's with their names on for christmas :)

People who don't look after the dc day-to-day often make these mistakes. Even my dh - who is a very involved dad - does this.

By all means label clothes, or put them in different labeled bags. But TBH it's a really trivial thing to tolerate in exchange for babysitting.

YABU doesn't really matter unless your 18 year old son is wearing your 6 week old daughters dress and vice versa.

My 1 year old DS2 for some reason really enjoys wearing 4 yo DS1's pyjama t-shirts. If this is the only problem you have when IL's look after your DD's, you're quite lucky.

I agree with mamsnet. I would have been so grateful for any help when my dcs were small, I wouldn't have cared what they were dressed in.

It really isn't important.

My MIL was so irresponsible and downright dangerous with small children I had to watch her like a hawk.

YABU My mum took DS down to the local cafe in his pyjamas when he was staying with her. She just didn't have a clue...to her they looked like casual wear. He didn't care though..he thought it was hilarious and tbh I didn't care either, he had a blast with her and she was just helping out - doing her best

anyway, I'm just as bad....I've put DS1 in DS2s trousers on occasion and wondered after a while why they were so short on him!! I wouldn't mind but there is 4 years age difference between them and I'm the mother...so I should really know better

YABU ...I look after my DGS sometimes ,when they were younger I always put them in the wrong clothes my DD just used to laugh

YABU. My dp still gets mixed up between dd1 and dd2's clothes (and now mixes mine in too - love the fact that he thinks my bum is as small as 13 year old skinny minny dd2's!).

I used to get home from work and find them in all sorts of strange combinations (he was a SAHD) - it never hurt them. :)

They came to a big family function in each other's trousers. They looked ridiculous.

BTW, after babysitting 3.8yo ds1 and 6mo dd, my mum once gave me a telling off for having ds1 wear bodysuits that were so tight they were crushing his balls.

"I'm sorry, but I wasn't going to do him an injury so I didn't do up the poppers." she said. "I wouldn't have put him in it, only you didn't give me anything else for him to wear."

It's very difficult to tell the difference between pyjamas and a long-sleeved t-shirt and leggings for this age group. My cleaner still has to ask which is which sometimes (as pjs don't get ironed), even for my 6 yr old DS.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If you want to you could give her two bags, preferably with each child's name printed on their bag.

I would absolutely love to moan about such an issue, as it is my MIL has never looked after my children for longer than 5 mins whilst I go to the loo so yabvu.

my dh has never been able to tell the difference between ds1 and ds2 clothes and muddles us my socks with dss1 !

whoknows - my handy hint for the sock issue is to throw away all your socks and buy a load in a single pattern, preferably one that no boy would be seen dead in, like hearts or flowers. Or if you need serious socks (in black) to wear under work trousers then buy them with girly pink toes and heels.

I think you need to build a bridge and get over yourself.

Yabu what does it really matter. My 1 year old wore a 4-5 pj top to bed yesterday that belongs to my oldest. My 1 year old loves winnie the pooh saw the top and wanted to wear it - so what?
