Susan Boyle would have got nowhere as she would have no novelty value. Sorry.

Same really with Ann Widdecombe and her new found dancing career.

sparkle12mar08 · 24/11/2010 14:39

If you weren't rude, obnoxious and ignorant neither would you...

seepinglumpymammaries · 24/11/2010 14:40

except Anne W is at least funny

She has totally sorted her eyebrows out though hasn't she. Didn't realise till I saw that clip of Britain's Got Talent yet again. Usually I'm so dazzled by Amanda Holden's fillings/armpits I dont notice.

Alouiseg · 24/11/2010 14:42

I think you're spot on actually, it was the novelty factor of a frumpy old woman singing incredibly well that amazed most people.

There are plenty of incredible backing singers around who'll never get any where near the level of stardom that SB has.

We all love a happy ending.

coatgate · 24/11/2010 14:42

Agree - I don't think her voice is that special, and it is not as if she writes her own stuff. Surely it is not just the way she looks though, it is the way she is.

bigchris · 24/11/2010 14:43

I loved her perfect day on cin

TattyDevine · 24/11/2010 14:44

Yes its sort of a bit "rags to riches" isn't it which people love.

seepinglumpymammaries · 24/11/2010 14:47

I really think that people are sold on the novelty value (a bit like a socially acceptable freak show) rather than her personality or (limited)musical ability

Nice. She's a normal looking middle aged woman. Put your picture up and we'll all have a look at you. FFS.

gorionine · 24/11/2010 14:59

I agree with Jajas, it seems that any excuse to put someone down is fine.

TheEvilDead2 · 24/11/2010 15:03

This is pretty mean spirited. And tbf the VAST fucking majority of pop singers (possibly all at the moment) would be no where near the charts if not for their looks. Good, bad or "wacky"

MrsFlittersnoop · 24/11/2010 15:05

Utter bollox.

Ever taken a close look at some of the world's greatest opera singers?

Being a plain, overweight middle-aged woman has never been an issue in a purely meritocratic musical environment where the only thing that counts is TALENT.

MrsFlittersnoop · 24/11/2010 15:06

And skill of course. Years and years of training. Unlike the crap reality TV fantasy world where everyone is a potential winner.

GypsyMoth · 24/11/2010 15:07

ugh.....horrible

Well my response to that is 'and?'.

She can sing. At least as well as most of the people on these shows. So all in all I think it's a good thing that she isn't all air-brushed perfection.

faverolles · 24/11/2010 15:14

If the judges on BGT had listened to her with their eyes shut, she wouldn't have got through.
I don't mean that to be mean at all. I am far fatter and uglier. She's got an ok voice, but IMO it's not good enough to have taken her where she is now.
Her performance on CIN was awful. She was out of tune and badly out of time. She and the choir behind her might have well have been singing different songs.

I don't dislike her at all, and think there are some unnecessarily unkind comments about her, but there's certainly nothing special about her.

MardyBra · 24/11/2010 15:20

I'm fat and ugly big built and nothing special and can sing reasonably well. Maybe there's hope for me yet Grin.

' Same really with Ann Widdecombe and her new found dancing career.'

Ann widdecombe has been an MP for about 25 years ago and has been a cabinet minister. She has done loads of TV work and is very witty, as well as being a newspaper columnist.I don't think it is come dancing which has catapulted her to celebrity status

MardyBra · 24/11/2010 18:05

But she probably wouldn't have progressed so far in the competition if her appearance and demeanour weren't quite so amusing to some people (although personally I think the joke is wearing somewhat thin)

nikki1978 · 24/11/2010 18:06

I did one of those "Which sleb do you look like" apps on the iphone and got Ann Widdecombe! My friends pissed themselves laughing. Pic is on my profile - I really don't think I look like her! Grin

booyhoo · 24/11/2010 18:08

susan boyle has an absoloutely amazing voice. regardless of appearnace i think she would have got just as far as she did. her voice is what people listen to when they buy the music.
