this

I bought it to get married in. probably loads of you will be Shock at wearing such a thing for getting married in, but its only going to be a very small wedding, just me, DH to be, our kids and parents in a registry office. and I just wanted something pretty but not too dressy, was going to wear it with black opaques and black heels. I also can't afford to spend too much money on an outfit.

but I look like a sack of spuds. and i am DEPRESSED.

and DP bought his suit last week and looks jaw droppingly, staggeringly gorgeous in it. Blush and I don't want to look shit next to him :(

It's the sort of dress that would look bad on most people.

I don't dislike it, but you'd need no tummy, VERY toned arms. Basically an abnormally non-bumpy body

Beb · 23/11/2010 10:27

It looks oddly proportioned - most size 8 girls are slightly shorter (unless you are tall AND skinny, in which case Envy. The dress looks too long for someone who is quite short (it certainly would be too long on me). Send it back, I'll have a look and see what else is out there.

hobbgoblin · 23/11/2010 10:34

Bodycon dresses only look good on thin 19 year olds imo. They don't have any hips generally.

Also depends on height of your waist I think - bodycon makes short waists look dumpy, same if large chest.

I like the 'look' you seem to have wanted to achieve though. I saw a really nice 60s style cream dress recently - maybe in River Island -that would be lovely on somebody petite.

Bodycon could look tarty if not careful I think.

Francagoestohollywood · 23/11/2010 10:35

I agree with Cereal, you need to try your wedding dress on first. Lanvin collection for H7M, any good?

JamieLeeCurtis · 23/11/2010 10:35

yy hobgoblin - it needs to skim not hug

Francagoestohollywood · 23/11/2010 10:35

H&M

DooinMeCleanin · 23/11/2010 10:36

Asos have some nice, cream/white dresses. Some of them are really pretty.

CerealOffender · 23/11/2010 10:37

also i remember weeping when i put on my wedding outfit, i had the same bag of potatoes moment. then i got some spanx, a great bra and put some make up on and it looked fantastic!

GrendelsMum · 23/11/2010 10:38

Reality is absolutely right. That particular dress is going to look bad on anyone.

One thing my grandma (who worked for many years in fashion) taught me, is that if you look bad in a dress, the problem is with the cut and fabric of the dress, not with your body.

Idea One

Idea Two

Idea Three

Are any of these along the right lines style-wise for you?

pommedeterre · 23/11/2010 10:39

Very have some too in styles not too dissimilar. All very short though...

superv1xen · 23/11/2010 10:40

yeah i am short height wise, five foot 2, and i have a short body (so i guess, = short waist) although my legs are strangely long. Confused i also have toned arms from pole dancing although sadly dont have a flat tummy.

it looked so pretty when i took it out of its packaging as well, believe it or not, it doesn't look cheap in RL.

i have already had the fashion and beauty ladies on the case, but so far haven't found anything.

It sounds as if you have what Gok Wan would term a "smokin'" body. It's all about a style to suit though

JamieLeeCurtis · 23/11/2010 10:49

I think it should have a v neck if you are big boobed. Then not too short. if there's going to be boobage. You sound like you have a real hourglass figure

HumphreyCobbler · 23/11/2010 10:49

remember that it is the dress that is crap, NOT your body

Doozie · 23/11/2010 10:50

My Mum wore something similar in the 60s, crepe with lace overlay but the material was very expensive. She made it herself and looked amazing! And it was soft pink which suited her skin tone much better.

Maybe it's the colour or lack of that's not doing you any favours?

Wear your favourite colour - it might be more 'you' and compliment you better. My Mum had a traditional religious wedding and even she ditched the white. You can imagine how that went down in the 60s in the very conservative place she lived....

Sorry no ideas for alternatives, but good luck and congratulations!

HowAnnoying · 23/11/2010 10:50

what about this

HumphreyCobbler · 23/11/2010 10:50

yes that neck v unflattering to one with norkage

HumphreyCobbler · 23/11/2010 10:51

I would go and try on lots and lots of dresses to find your style, then you can shop around for a bargain.
