A good job there aren't many men on MN

1000 replies

Truckulent · 22/11/2010 08:00

I think men would be shocked at the level of resentment leveled at them on MN. Almost a seething mass of contempt at times.

I'm a man, been on here for years. And I was surprised by it.

AIBU to think it's a good job there aren't many men on here, or would more men posting help men and women understand each other better?

The average UK salary for a male manager currently £10031 more than that of a female manager.
Skilled Trades where the gap ranges from 22.7 per cent to 31.2 per cent.
The largest pay gaps for full-time, part-time and all employees are in the 40-49 age-group at 18.4 per cent, 23.7 per cent and 29.5 per cent respectively.

We have legislation that is supposed to combat this, who is going to fight this injustice if not the feminists?

Are womens salarys not lower because they often take career breaks in order to raise children. This means that they have less experience and so even though they may be doing the same job they are on lower pay grades than men as they don't have as much experience.

Beachcomber · 24/11/2010 16:39

Of course changes and improvements have been made to legal protection and political representation of women - feminists fought very hard for these changes.

I don't think we have quite reached the cultural and social stage where feminists can STFU and go home though.

Beachcomber · 24/11/2010 16:55

"As far as I can see, black or ethnic communities do not seek to segregate and align themselves with others who share similar physical attributes"

TSH have you ever been to Chinatown or the South Side of Glasgow (where the biggest British Asian community in Scotland lives) or Bradford?

TheFeministParent · 24/11/2010 16:57

cikals....I would imagine pay comparisons are for the same job otherwise it wouldn't be a pay gap.

daftpunk · 24/11/2010 17:04

Ok BC I won't waste my time arguing the points - because you're right - there's no argument to be had with information I didn't request.

I wanted you to tell me that men can do xyz but women can't. And I didn't mean have the right to walk the streets at night without fear of attack - everyone should have that right - not just women.

And if I wanted, I could go out tonight and attack another woman ( or man ) plenty of women do - I could make porn films - I could run a brothel - I could do anything a man does.

TheFeministParent · 24/11/2010 17:14

DP....Hey only gay men are allowed condoms in the Catholic church.

You could expect to earn less for the same job.

Woman is the n----r of the world
Yes she is...think about it
Woman is the n----r of the world
Think about it...do something about it

We make her paint her face and dance
If she won?t be a slave, we say that she don?t love us
If she?s real, we say she?s trying to be a man
While putting her down we pretend so hard that she's above us

Woman is the n----r of the world...yes she is
If you don?t believe me take a look at the one you?re with
Woman is the slave of the slave
Ah yeah...if you believe me you better scream about it

We make her bear and raise our children
And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen
We tell her home is the only place she should be
Then we complain that she?s too unworldly to be our friend

Woman is the n----r of the world...yes
If you believe me take a look at the one you?re with
Woman is the slave to the slave
Yeah, you better scream it

We insult her everyday on TV
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When she?s young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb

Woman is the n----r of the world...yes she is
If you don?t believe me take a look at the one you?re with
Woman is the slave to the slave
Yes she is...if you believe me, you better scream all about it

We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance

daftpunk · 24/11/2010 17:27

Did you know good looking slim people are more likely to get a job over fat ugly people ( fact )... not sure what you feminists can do about that one

Beachcomber · 24/11/2010 17:32

DP you are being obtuse.

Ok, if you like, in theory women have the same rights as men (in the UK anyway). In practice women are discriminated against and disadvantaged by a male dominated social system which grants unearned privilege to men and which metes out unearned disadvantage to women.

Most people find the above quite easy to grasp.

Here is a simple example;

Both men and women have the right to go about their business without being sexually assaulted. Sexual assault, despite the legislation against it, still happens. It happens to more men than women - this situation is largely tolerated by society. Sexual assault is considered an occupational hazard of being a women. Many men feel entitled to sexually assault women. Laws have proved a limited tool for changing this situation.

mathanxiety · 24/11/2010 17:33

I thought it was good looking, tall white men preferably sporting an old school tie who were more likely to get a job?

Beachcomber · 24/11/2010 17:37

No, it is short black women from inner city schools mathanxiety. Honest - there is a law which says they have the same rights as anyone else.

I think it's a minority of white, privileged men who have ALL of the power.

Coming from a very working class background I don't feel especially privileged, apart from living in a free society etc.

Especially reading about some of the salaries people are on. I think the percentage of people who went to university from my school was about 1%.

I suppose this is where multiple jeopardy comes in?

Lot's of black Americans voted for Barrack Obama because they felt a black president would be a better representative for them than a white president.

Black communities were very proud and over the fecking moon when he was elected.

Beachcomber · 24/11/2010 17:46

And that was not only black communities in the US.

mathanxiety · 24/11/2010 17:49

Why, TSH? Is it because it doesn't rhyme?

ccpccp · 24/11/2010 17:52

Things have changed since Lennons time mathanxiety. Women have it so much better nowadays.

Perhaps Paul McCartney can do a modern day one?

daftpunk · 24/11/2010 17:56

Actually BC - positive discrimination would mean that the short black women probably would get the job - extra points if she's a lesbian and disabled.

positive discrimination is the worst sort of discrimination - and so patronising.

TheFeministParent · 24/11/2010 17:57

TSH...So what is the real beef you have with people who want real equality for women?
