I am working Christmas day, Boxing day, New years Eve and New years day and the day after (Sunday). I have 27th and 28th off (big bloody deal). I work for the fucking NHS. I hate the BASTARDS.
Last year I had boxing day off.

My husband ordered a turkey who is still running around and called cyril.

OP posts:
Meglet · 17/11/2010 21:57

Sad. Do you get next Xmas off, scant consolation I know but you must have a team rota for the festive seaons Confused.

But LOL at cyril the turkey. Is he going to kill cyril and pluck him?

AgentZigzag · 17/11/2010 21:57

Of course YANBU! But it's lovely people like you who keep us going when we're all arguing with our families and someone gets stabbed with a carving fork Smile

That's shit about your DH and DC missing out having you though, but Cyril must be appreciative.

mollymax · 17/11/2010 21:58

Really feel for you.
I worked for the NHS for 19 years.
my main reason for leaving when I had the children was that I did not want to work any more Christmases.

PaisleyLeaf · 17/11/2010 21:59

That doesn't sound fair.
Anyone up for swapping? I know that before I had my family I actually enjoyed working xmas day.

Alouiseg · 17/11/2010 22:00

That is bad planning! Whoever organised the roster needs to look at your days and have a rethink.

rosie0000 · 17/11/2010 22:00

You are so not BU! My husband works for NHS but his department organise the roster so that people who work xmas day don't have to work new years and vice versa. Any way to complain? Definitely not fair.

streptococcus · 17/11/2010 22:00

I feel your pain. i work in the shitty nhs.

I have planned the conception of my children to get christmas off in my maternity leave.... otherwise I have worked every single xmas day since I started work.

I suggest changing your christmas day this year. either Xmas eve or 27th. let children do stocking only chrismas day if you can sqeeze it in?? or otherwise see if you can swap with someone who doesnt celebrate Xmas?

you have my sympathies

gobbledegoop · 17/11/2010 22:01

That totally takes the piss! you should do either xmas or new year not both. See if you can swap a few shifts, thats what i did. Now i'm just working xmas and have new year off.
(i work for the nhs too)

Altaira · 17/11/2010 22:03

I've worked many Xmas's in the NHS and never seen a rota that would expect someone to work all 4 of the big days.

Go back and complain, it should be allocated more fairly.

Honeydragon · 17/11/2010 22:04

I have planned the conception of my children to get christmas off in my maternity leave.... otherwise I have worked every single xmas day since I started work.

I actually got accused of doing this so I cold have two christmases off by my employer! And jolly nice they have been too.

yanbu

trixymalixy · 17/11/2010 22:07

That sounds really unfair that you have to work both Xmas and New Year's day. usually it's considered fair for people to have one or the other off.

Are there any people in your rota that have both off?

Bobbiesmum · 17/11/2010 22:07

I am guessing you are a doctor? I have found there is often someone who does not celebrate Xmas or lives too far away to travel home, who will swap if approached/begged.
Not at all fair but they will get round it as 27 and 28 are the bank holidays.
Nurses seem to have a fairer system (only work Xmas or new year generally) or not 2 xmas days 2 years in a row unless through choice.
I feel your pain, try try try and swap! I have my fingers crossed for you.

lostinwales · 17/11/2010 22:08

You have all my sympathies too, DS1 and DS3 we're both conceived to get out of shitty Christmas/new years rotas (Millenium Eve anyone?)! Although I appreciate it's a little late for for this year. I'm so glad my department can't afford me at the moment as I am revelling in not having to work Christmas around shitty rotas.

I am actually feeling so angry for you, it's not fair, I hope you get HEAPS of bank holiday extra pay and days off in lieu so you can have a Christmas Holiday week to enjoy when all the stupid Christmas hype has died down. (preferably somewhere warm)

thumbwitch · 17/11/2010 22:12

That is really unreasonable.

I used to work for the NHS as well, and our boss always made sure that if we worked one day over Christmas that was it; and if we worked Christmas EVe or Christmas Day then we didn't do New Year's Eve. I always used to volunteer for Christmas Eve to get it out the way because I was the one of the few who didn't have DC, so it suited most others too.

Sounds like whoever runs your roster is a right bastard.

streptococcus · 17/11/2010 22:17

oh and OP have you tried swapping with someone informally 2 of their shifts for 1 of yours, or a christmas day day shift for a night shift they dont want?
sure you've thought of this already but has worked for friends in the past!

PurpleTaipan · 17/11/2010 22:18

I have worked in many various jobs, and as a few people have already said, you should NOT being doing all FOUR shifts !!

Xmas OR New yr NOT both. Seriously, I would ask about this ASAP.

Hope they can sort it out for you!

Caz10 · 17/11/2010 22:20

I feel your pain, or rather DH does, he is in the fire service and we have not seen hide nor hair of him on Xmas or NY for a good few years now, and he already knows he is working it next year too Sad

The way his shifts work he will be around for part of Xmas Day this year which is something, but it's sandwiched between 2 nightshifts on 24th and 25th so he won't exactly be full of festive cheer!

solo · 17/11/2010 22:23

In the prison service we have an unwritten thing that those with children take Christmas day and then work new year and those without, work Christmas and have new year off. Works quite well.

USoRight · 17/11/2010 22:24

I have offered a friend I will work the 27th for her as she has a family wedding and mums birthday in ireland in that Xmas week. So may be 28th can be my xmas day. Husband was going to wring Cyrils neck, gut and pluck it. Said may as well leave him alone and give him an extra serving of corn, so at least someones happy, even if it is the bloody TURKEY. So gutted and upset, only found out just now, so ranting away for all Im worth Sad

No one will swap, lots in the same position, and no bargaining tool as Im working the bloody lot.

Im only abloody nurse - this is the worse Ive ever had, always got ONE bloody day off!

Its a computer that does the roster - a FUCKING human is too much to ask.

OP posts:
Altaira · 17/11/2010 22:28

Go off sick Grin

thumbwitch · 17/11/2010 22:29

Then the computer should be stomped on! OR a human should be able to moderate it - what a useless way to deal with things!! Do you want to name and shame your Trust/hospital?

USoRight · 17/11/2010 22:32

The bastard computer says 27th and 28th are bank holidays too and therefore equal to the 25th/26th!! I'll complain but can see a huge brick wall cos loads in the same situation. Thinking of stuffing cyrils innards in their stinking computer.

OP posts:
BootyMum · 17/11/2010 22:33

This sucks. And I bet you don't get any extra pay for working these utterly unsocial hours.

I used to work for the NHS, never ever again. They are a completely shit employer imo and take all their hard working staff entirely for granted and often shit all over them as seems to have been done to you here... Just wondering though, could someone human reassess your shift pattern? Seems very unfair Sad and Angry!

USoRight · 17/11/2010 22:33

I'll probably get the sack thumbwich, so will name change and say its NHS Direct. No hospital i've ever worked in has pulled such a shitty trick as this

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 17/11/2010 22:34

Whoever runs your computer should be able to stick some kind of algorithm thingy in it so that IF people work 25thDec THEN they don't also work 31stDec - it's not going to be that hard! Talk to the computer department as well.
