I am working Christmas day, Boxing day, New years Eve and New years day and the day after (Sunday). I have 27th and 28th off (big bloody deal). I work for the fucking NHS. I hate the BASTARDS.
Last year I had boxing day off.

My husband ordered a turkey who is still running around and called cyril.

That is utter shit, I feel really sorry for you.

USoRight · 18/11/2010 11:37

We have a set rota where I work every weekend and would have fallen on these holidays BUT it was suspended for 2 weeks and supposed to be FAIR. Their idea of fair is we work 5 of the 7 busy days. In my case this is all the holidays!! I am off on the 28th so this is going to be my xmas day as others family members will be off on that day (I hope)

Cyril is for the chop anyway and will be stored in the freezer by DH as the farmer said he is 'surplus to requirements'. DH will cook beef instead, as I will be too knackered to cook, but will invite family around then so mini christmas with presents Smile.

I have great sympathy for all the other poor sods working the whole of the holiday period.

At NHS Direct we dont have ward sisters, only team leaders and if I refused to work one of the days I'd be sacked! End of !!!

They are screwing you over here and it is so unfair. I would go and see someone senior and ask for Christmas day off, on the grounds that you will happily work all th3 other days.

If they refuse, then in your position I'd be tempted to chuck a sickie. They will know what you've done, but will be unable to prove it and I think it will be their own fault for being so bloody unreasonable.

MrsGubbins · 18/11/2010 11:44

as an ex NHS nurse I feel for you as well OP, in 10 years I was never expected to work both Christmas and NY, it was always one or the other and if we didn't self roster and cover all the necessary shifts then the unit managers made the decision for you.

I would tell them that you'll work one or the other but not both. I work in nursing management now overseas and I would never expect someone to do something I wouldn't do myself.

USoRight · 18/11/2010 12:05

karma Ive not got the nerve to chuck a sickie, theyre looking for excuses to get rid of us and sickies go down on an overall performance chart! Have tried ringing them all morning and they wont answer!

OP posts:
MackerelOfFact · 18/11/2010 12:08

That's really awful. If I couldn't get the time off I think I'd be handing my notice in and trying like mad to get another job before the end of my notice period! It's not fair to only have 1 day off, and an insignificant one at that.

verytellytubby · 18/11/2010 12:13

Computer says no.

That sounds so shit. Hope you can at least swap one day.

USoRight · 18/11/2010 12:14

I'm off to go shopping, will buy myself a huge cream bun and bugger the diet. Then will feel even more depressed as scales will go back up. Lifes a bitch and then you die. Sad

OP posts:
Sidge · 18/11/2010 12:19

That's really crap, no problem working one or the other (par for the course when you work in the NHS) but working both because the computer says so is shite.

I'm very glad I work in primary care - DH is home for Christmas this year (military) and I'm really looking forwards to our 4 days off together!

happyoverhere · 18/11/2010 12:50

Isnt NHS direct being scrapped? If so you will have plenty of time of next year but not much pay! So I would take the money while you have it. Those of us that run our own businesses work all the time and dont get all the salary benefits you get anyway so YABU!!

RunawayChristmasTree · 18/11/2010 12:59

Pull a sickie

GiddyPants · 18/11/2010 17:09

this is so shit, ok so you could spend another day with the family, not such a big deal, but it seems like your getting all the busy days and the majority of the work?!

I also work for the NHS and due to having a disabled child I'm very part time, and have set shifts to arrange child care.
It doesn't stop the snide comments from childless collegues thoughSad

We work on a points system, full timers have to have 8 points I think, As I'm PT I have to have 3 or one major one minor, which I have provided.

GiddyPants · 18/11/2010 17:10

Oh and SAVE CYRIL!!!!

CarGirl · 18/11/2010 17:19

Surely you would be work pro-rata of a full time persons requirements?

MIL used to get screwed over in the same way, she worked half time but was expected to work the same number of shifts of the holidays as the full time staff Hmm

GiddyPants · 18/11/2010 17:27

yes Cargirl I work 17.25 hrs, so pro rata of FT, But it doesan't stop my collegues saying that I get preferential treatment because I have a young child.
(which bTW is bollocks!)

CarGirl · 18/11/2010 17:31

I love the way the FT forget that you only get PT pay as well!

nextafternursing · 18/11/2010 18:41

Happyoverhere - so we should be glad to work all of Christmas and New Year because we will probably be unemployed next yearHmm Wow you are truly, erm, special.

Seen my rota now[not shocked at all, is as appalling as I suspected it would be]

Been chatting to colleagues. I strongly suspect there has been deliberate moves to not give people what they asked for as days off. Because you can't please everyone, but to piss everyone off takes some effort.

GiddyPants · 18/11/2010 18:52

that rubis next I have 2nd hand experience of NHSD (a couple of people who I work with has worked there) and they said that they were glad to get out of the place, they don't care for their staff, they probably never will.
It's unfortunate that the service will be going, I personally have been helped many times by it.
Also where is all the staff supposed to go?
the NHs is making so many cuts (band 5 &2) already, In the trust that I work for anyway.

GiddyPants · 18/11/2010 19:12

rubish Bear

USoRight · 18/11/2010 19:45

next Not surprised at all. Pissing everyone off instead of just a few is probably on the money. I have a G&T in my hand and dont give a monkeys anymore. Will look at everyones elses rota to see if anyone got everything of and wonder Hmm is she sleeping with the boss!
giddy you got wrong end of nexts stick, she works there too and is a pissed off as me!!!

I remember one year (on a ward) my xmas off duty was working 24th 25th Dec, and 31st and also 1st Jan.

I had boxing day off. My ward manager had the cheek to say thats not bad off duty. She had 2 weeks off over Christmas and New Year.

And she wondered why I handed in my notice.

To the OP. YANBU. NHS frontline staff are just canon fodder to NHS management.

Oh, and reg nurses. Do you realise we are not getting our £38 professional fees reimbursement as per agenda for change this year? Even though it was supposed to be reviewed this November and has not been.

(OK will get off my soapbox).

USoRight · 18/11/2010 20:01

Judging by previous years aged your ward manager was right - I would have considered boxing day off as good off-duty - I've had that alone off many times and nothing else! Didnt know we were reimbursed nmc ransom money anyway. Bear teddy is, just because!!

OP posts:
agedknees · 18/11/2010 20:08

Should have had it reimbursed in Nov 2007, 2008 and 2009. If you have not had it, it is fraud.

ratspeaker · 18/11/2010 20:08

DH said they took the 4 days out of the rota for Xmas and New Year and asked for volunteers
He's now working Boxing day and 2nd Jan.
He'll be off the "official" days of 27th, 28th Dec and 3rd 4th Jan.
He's not sure if he'll be paid extra for the Boxing Day etc as it's not an official holiday ( as is Xmas Day )

ratspeaker · 18/11/2010 20:09

Forgot to say DH volunteered for those days
