To expect DD's teacher to use the name we gave her?

DD has a double barreled surname...hyphenated. She began in year2 of her school this year and then another child with the same first name joined the class....so her teacher began Calling them Anna B and Anna M....my daughter being Anna M...now...technically my DD is Anna M-S....should I say something or not? Anna M appears on lists, and charts and everything...and DD does not seem to mind but not sure how DH would feel.

Here's the thing...we are going away for a year and returning to the same school for year three...so should I just leave it for now? Or say something?

I don't feel quite comfortable with the teacher doing this...I guess it's to make things easier but it seems a bit rude to me...tell me ....what do you think and is it worth mentioning or should I just indicate to her new teacher next year that we prefer her full surname used?

I am bad at approaching things like this...I always come over as hysterical and anxious...

you know what

if a parent came to me and said this I'd think oh for god's sake and [roll]

get over it

eviscerateyourmemory · 07/11/2010 17:36

I think that it would be unreasonable to bring this up with the teacher, and I suspect that the teacher would be a bit Hmm if you did.

Having a child with a very popular first name is going to involve them being known at times by an initial too, it seems even more involved to use a double barelled abbreviation.

MrsWeasley · 07/11/2010 17:37

I personally wouldn't say anything to the teacher.

In one of the classes I work in we have a similar situation. The teacher and myself write Jack R and Jack M-S on their work. However the children write Jack R and Jack M.

Does your DD have a middle name?
My brother had a popular name 3 in his class, 2 with the same surname so instead of first name and first letter of surname they were first name and first letter if middle name,
My brother is still John D 25 yrs later

BangingNoise · 07/11/2010 18:01

YABU. Her surname starts with M, therefore she is Anna M.

IAPJJLPJ · 07/11/2010 18:30

Could be worse. We had a Lucy in the class and then another Lucy started. Unfortunately they are now known as Nice Lucy and Lucy. I.e the one that is just Lucy isn't as well liked!!

Onetoomanycornettos · 07/11/2010 18:35

Oh dear, that's terrible for poor old 'just' Lucy!

spanieleyes · 07/11/2010 18:38

Last year, out of 8 girls in my yr 6 class, three were called Jessica, and all preferred to be known as Jess, unfortunately two were Jess C! Life was trickyGrin

Please say this to her teacher. It'll give her something to laugh about in the staffroom.

When I think of the letters M and S together I think of multiple sclerosis so I think it would sound rather strange.

piscesmoon · 07/11/2010 19:03

It is actually nothing to do with names-the teacher just wants a really quick way to jot it down-if she has to start jotting 2 capital letters and a hyphen it rather defeats the object!

pointydog · 07/11/2010 19:13

yabu

This is about having a quick way of distinguishing the two children and their work, not about attempting to change someone's name.

PinkieMinx · 07/11/2010 19:20

YABU - you say you have a tendancy to be hysterical and anxious - the time is now.....

A1980 · 07/11/2010 19:39

She is Anna M. Double barrelled or not, her surname begins with the letter M.

Where is she on the school register? Bet she's between the L's and the N's on it.

YABU with that level of pedantry

ChippingIn · 07/11/2010 20:04

YABU

It is the first letter of her surname, that is all the teacher requires to tell them apart and that is all she is doing.

classydiva · 07/11/2010 20:06

Seriously what is the problem? There is not one so why make one? If your daughter does not mind then leave it be. There are starving kids in the world and if this is all you have to be concerned about think yourself lucky.

cumfy · 07/11/2010 20:55

I really think you should see someone about this. You seem to have OCD.

pigsinmud · 07/11/2010 21:04

Yabu. It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. The teacher will think you mad if you say something to her!

SlightlyJaded · 07/11/2010 23:37

Seriously? This is your 'problem'?

Lucky you Shock

elphabadefiesgravity · 07/11/2010 23:42

YABU. We have 3 Charlies, we call them girl Charlie, boy Charlie and Charlie M.

Its just a shorthand way of differentiating.

Tori27 · 07/11/2010 23:43

You are over-complicating things for the teacher - I would be more concerned about whether DD was getting a good education.

Life's too short to stress about little things.

begonyabampot · 07/11/2010 23:44

is this for real - was sure this was just another silly piss take.
