talking to a beautiful Somali lady today(they all have hollywood smiles don't they, bloody genetic miracles!!) and she confirmed that whilst her 5 & 7 year old dds don't cover their heads she gets harassed and pressured by men at the mosque that her dds should cover. She said that whilst she doesn't because she loves her dds hair, other women do cover their very young dds. She said the men also say that unless they do it from very young they will not do it when they are the right age!

So it's not only about copying Mummy, just like the rise of the burka it's a renewed stick to beat women with.

technically most geneticists and other scientists think there is one race of humans. There is unsufficient variation between people 1-3% to justify splitting humans into different races. race is a social concept not a scientific one.

Even teh word Caucasian which historically has meant someone from the regions Europe, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, West Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia but has becme bastardised by popular American usgae indicating white European person.

If you called someone Caucasian in Russia for example they would assume you meant someone form the Caucases (many ethnic groups but predominantly Turkic in origin).

I think you may mean an dethnic group rather than a race "a group of people whose members identify with each other, through a common heritage, consisting of a common language, a common culture (often including a shared religion) and a tradition of common ancestry"

As you were.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 21:08

That is true. There is often more variation within races than between.
Still Italian though

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 21:09

kew i think that is the right description.

OP glad you are keeping a tally of the number of Somali women you have met, are you being paid by Migration Watch or just voluntarily keeping tabs.

'We all make broad generalisations all of the time' - no thats just you

LBsmum · 18/10/2010 21:27

agree with Kewcumber the term Caucasian takes in more than white european, meaning white europeans are the same 'race' as indians or even dare I say pakistanis,

fastedwina · 18/10/2010 21:29

well Dh and I are Scottish, living in England. Our dc's were born in England. Officially we think of the kids as Scottish, but they were born here, educated here and have english accents. I'll leave it up to the kids to decide what they feel more comfortable being and what they identify to even though dh is adamant that they are scottish. Could be we are hedging our bets as they have more chance getting to the World Cup playing for England than Scotland I'm afraid to say! Grin

So at what point do you stop being from the country of your forefathers and adopt your birth/chosen country. That would mean there aren't really that many true english folk as most folk descended from, vikings, Romans, Saxons etc. Maybe we should just leave it to the individual to decide what they want to be.

What SDTG and Bedubabe said.

As for the 'little girls want to look like their mums' argument, fair enough. DD (5) likes to wear my make up and trot round the house in my heels.

That's dressing up, though, not real life and no way would I let her out the house like that, or dressed up like an adult in any way.

I do feel very sad seeing little girls on a sunny day smothered in scarves and robes when their brothers are running round the park in shorts and t-shirts. Which is a common sight where I live :(

Saffyronron · 18/10/2010 21:46

I've been depressed and tearful all day. spikeycow and boohooooo and cheered me up no end!

allhallowsandwine · 18/10/2010 21:48

to OP so you did not actually state what confirms you to be you right and what in actual fact you are right about. Confused

seems this post was just an outlet to boast about you talking to a beautiful somali woman and her children with lovely hair? never a prouder moment i expect you where beside yourself.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 21:49

It is quite funny reading back actually Grin

Ripeberry · 18/10/2010 21:52

I'm getting more and more of the oppinion that some Muslims just hate women being better or more succesful than their men folk.

The Burka has to be banned, to free these women!

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 21:54

glad to be of some help saffyronron Grin

fastedwina · 18/10/2010 21:58

but Spikey,

you say you are no bigot as you are married to a muslim. Can muslims not be bigots to other groups then or is it only whites who can be bigotted to non whites? I don't think you are a bigot but your posts almost verge on it which I don't think you intend. You are born England but would be insulted to be called english, why? What is wrong with being english - just calmly tell people what background you identify with. I felt a bit like this when I was much younger growing up in Scotland but learned it was all silly and have tried to leave it behind years ago, no doubt not always successfully but I realise how silly it all is

MoralDefective · 18/10/2010 22:02

Spikeycow...if you are Italian and your DH is Turkish and your children were born in England then what 'race' are they?..
My DP is Scottish,i am English,DCs born and brought up in England with English GFS/BFS.....what will their children be?

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 22:02

I would be insulted because my identity is Italian.
Not sure of your first point. Obviously anyone can be bigoted towards anyone. I was picked up on a comment about Muslims and said why would I have gotten involved with a Muslim if I held those attitudes? I know anyone can be bigoted. You should have seen the cack I went through with my ex family at the beginning.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 22:06

Race? We are white. We are just not English

clemetteattlee · 18/10/2010 22:07

Are you sure you mean "insulted"? It seems a bit odd for someone with British citizenship (which I assume you have) to be "insulted" to be considered British.

MoralDefective · 18/10/2010 22:07

Yes,i see you identify with being Italian, but, don't you see the irony....you live in England but would be insulted if someone thought you were English...my ILS thought i was Jewish when we first met(i'm not)i was not insulted...how rude would that be to Jewish people.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 22:08

Look if you all want to be English you can. Whatever. I'm not, neither are my children. We are "just" British born, our ethnicity is NOT English, regardless of whether people want us to pretend we are English.

clemetteattlee · 18/10/2010 22:09

Have you considered giving up your British citizenship?

MoralDefective · 18/10/2010 22:09

Ok...let's split hairs...Confused what nationality would they be?

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 22:09

No not insulted. Maybe irritated. Because I sound English, people assume. I was asked why I was Catholic in the past, for example.

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 22:10

i think moral is asking what your children's ethnicity is if you are italian and their father is turkish.
