to think people are jolly unreasonable about ff/bf?

  1. I don't care what anyone feeds their babies: sardines, coca cola, bm, fm (although it is a bit sad for the babies if it's sardines).
  1. Breast milk is best. If nothing else it has long chain fatty acids that cannot be replicated in formula.
  1. Some people can't bf so fine, use formula.

I can't see what else there is to discuss.

Because it's not the same as serving up fishfingers and chips, it is tied up with a million other things, namely the emotions of a hormonal, shattered new mother and the feelings of success or failure that follow.

But on paper you're right, absolutely. Still doesn't stop me bawling when I think back to it! Blush

MrsC2010 · 13/10/2010 12:24

Me neither. I have never come across this issue in real life either.

Fluffypoms · 13/10/2010 12:28

Agree Hully.

because people enjoy getting on their high horse and love to express why they are a better parent than the next..

whatever works best for parent/child i say!

aquamortis · 13/10/2010 12:30

snort at sardines.

At first I thought of course, yes, nothing else to discuss. Then I thought that you made a bit of a leap with 3. If you are having problems breastfeeding, and need advice, it might feel that there IS more to talk about. And Rockbird is right that there are so many mad hormones involved with it that at the time it feels like something SO MUCH more important than it is (I was lucky and found it relatively easy to breastfeed, but I was a bit bonkers about it - esp about expressing).

Still it would be nice if people managed to control their vitriol on the subject, wouldn't it.

TattyDevine · 13/10/2010 12:32

Sardines also contain long chain fatty acids though... Smile

Breastmilk is not the only substance with long chain polyunsaturates.

Spidermama · 13/10/2010 12:34

I love it when people start threads to proclaim the extent to which they don't care about a particular thing. Grin

Rockbird · 13/10/2010 12:35

Depends on the sardines though, to be fair. Nice fresh Portugese sardinhas or the vile slippery tinned things... :o

Hullygully · 13/10/2010 12:35

It weren't so emotive when I were a lass.

TattyDevine · 13/10/2010 12:35

Its not the fatty acids that can't be replicated in breastmilk, by the way - its the antibodies. Antibodies are a reason in itself to give your child some breastmilk if you can even if its just the colostrum, though the more the better.

I think they should change their "breast is best" to more of an "every breastfeed counts" type stance, even though a lot of the stats are for babies that have been exclusively breastfed for the first year (with food added of course)

SoupDragon · 13/10/2010 12:36

Basically, you're right.

However, there are more issues such as a lack of support meaning a mother feels she has "failed" at breastfeeding and a lack of real information about formula. Also, how baby feeding is portrayed in the media can be misleading.

No, it doesn't matter whether a baby is fed formula or breast milk provided that the choice was made with correct and full information and that it was actually a choice and not the result of no proper support.

Hullygully · 13/10/2010 12:37

Just to be clear, Spidermama, that is not strictly accurate.

I started the thread because I can't see what there is to argue about. There are clear FACTS that may not be liked, but cannot be disputed.

Sardines in chilli oil are best. Yum.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 13/10/2010 12:37

I thought this was Funnys again, but the thread title is too measured

I have a problem with 1. I care when people who wanted to breastfeed are let down and end up formula feeding. I also care when people are presented with ff as the default and so never really consider the alternative. I don't care (no in an arsey way) when people choose to ff - they are happy so I am not concerned.

Hullygully · 13/10/2010 12:38

Long chain fatty acids cannot be replicated, they get broken when the formula is shaken up.

Hully - when I saw this thread title, opened it and saw the OP was you I nearly choked on my BM skinny (yet fatty acid) latte

Hullygully · 13/10/2010 12:44

Hello my lovely! Put a slug of gin in it.

Already done my friend, already done.

pommedeterre · 13/10/2010 13:04

TattyDevine - Totally agree. it would be so much nicer and appealing. All the current campaign does is encourage posters/threads like this on mumsnet. It distracts me from my mumsnet MIL bashing.

Hullygully · 13/10/2010 13:06

yy to Tatty's idea.

faverolles · 13/10/2010 13:08

Sardines are disgusting.

Now chocolate sardines........

Aren't there long chain polyunsaturates in Flora? Maybe there's the answer staring us all in the face?

Chocolate sardines?? Vom.

May I ask why, Shiney? I won't shout, honest.
