DH says I am really strange. Am I? Or are there fellow strange ones?

I just admitted to DH that I really rather like the sound of sirens in the distance and find the way the sound rises and falls quite satisfying, even soothing. Is this really so strange? He says it is.

Obviously when they are ear-shattering they're horrible but far away it's quite reassuring noise, isn't it?

Or am I mad?

Hmmm... I think you may, in fact, be a little strange Smile

Sorry.

BubbleBobble · 08/10/2010 22:20

Nope, I like this too. It makes me feel like there are people out there who are looking after me, or would come to help if I needed them.

SofaKitten · 08/10/2010 22:21

I just like the sound

potplant · 08/10/2010 22:21

I dont like it They always make me think my house is on fire

JaneS · 08/10/2010 22:22

Ah, sorry belle, you're in the minority now. Wink

Thanks Bubble, Sofa.

YABU.
I hare loud sudden noises, so they make me very unsettled. Hate it when you're driving and an emergency vehicle comes from nowhere.

purpleturtle · 08/10/2010 22:22

They definitely have the opposite effect on me, which means you must be strange. Grin

Or maybe it's because they're usually pretty close when I hear them, and it happens a lot.

BelleDameSansMerci · 08/10/2010 22:23

LRD I think you mean "ner ner, ner ner, ner ner" except they don't really make that noise any more Grin

JaneS · 08/10/2010 22:24

Yeah ... I wondered if I hear them funny, because I know that sometimes I don't pick up on the sound very well if it's right by me. So maybe we all hear it a bit differently?

I am strange, purple, it's true. Grin

BubbleBobble · 08/10/2010 22:27

Oh no, I don't like them when I'm close to them! That's horrible because they are too loud.

ElectricSoftParade · 08/10/2010 22:27

When I lived just down the road from the fire station I used to get a bit of the old prickly eye (tears)when I heard the sirens, because I knew they were going out to help people. It is a comfort to know folks are willing and happy to help others. YANBU.

duchesse · 08/10/2010 22:28

Yes you are. We moved 200 miles west to get away from that kind of cacophony. Those and the helicopters constantly overflying on their way to RAF Odiham were pushing me towards an early grave or madness.

JaneS · 08/10/2010 22:30

Grin at belle. Thanks ...

duchesse - helicopters would be a different matter!

I lived in Hackney for a while and everytime I tried to record my answerphone message there would be a siren going past...I kept trying and in the end left it...it was very worrying for poor Mum back in the sticks!

deaddei · 08/10/2010 22:33

When we're in Wales, the fighter jets nearly give me a heart attack.
I get ridiculously angry and shout "bastards" at them.

bethjeff · 08/10/2010 22:33

I live next to hospital and a fire station in the city centre so get an awful lot of neenaw neenaw ner ner ner ner.

It makes me want to move house. You strange peculiar lady!

duchesse · 08/10/2010 22:35

Chinooks mostly they were. Make you feel like your chest is exploding and you're about to have a heart attack before you even hear them.

deaddei · 08/10/2010 22:37

Maybe you have a thing about fireman or paramedics.
Now a thing about fireman is not strange at all.

purpleturtle · 08/10/2010 22:38

We know it's bedtime when we hear the police helicopter overhead. Happens most evenings. Grin

loopyloops · 08/10/2010 22:39

YABU. But I find the ones in funny. They sound like a baby crying.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 08/10/2010 22:40

I love the sound of an aeroplane on a summers day. I find it so soothing and nostalgic.

MistsAndMellow · 08/10/2010 22:40

I love them too.

What I don't like is police helicopters circling where I live. Which is fair enough.

Do you like rain on the roof too? That is soothing.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 08/10/2010 22:40

And the sound of a train in the distance.

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 08/10/2010 22:42

strange

MistsAndMellow · 08/10/2010 22:48

Train in the distance is wonderful! I used to have that to listen to when my parents tried to tear each other / us apart.

It was a lovely reassuring sound. It just went on no matter what and I knew it would take me away one day.
