to think Mothercare are threatening MNHQ ?

cumfy · 04/10/2010 17:12

There is a current AIBU thread which originally had the title:

to be absolutely furious with c&&&ing mothercare?? (sanitized)

Within an hour or so after I emailled their PR dept highlighting the poor customer service detailled therein, the thread title was changed to:

to be absolutely furious with &&&&&&& mothercare??

My interpretation is that Mothercare tried to get the thread pulled, but instead MNHQ agreed to amend the title
Coincidence:o

Note there are many <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/search?q=site:www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/+intitle:cunting&num=100&hl=en&safe=off&client=opera&hs=EvS&rls=en-GB&prmd=v&filter=0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">AIBU threads with cunting still in the title; so seems unlikely this was simply a "language" issue.

@cumfy

I think the principal issue is defamation.

In the eyes of the law MN is seen as a publisher, with ultimate power to edit content.

Basically, MC just need to whisper "defamation" and MN will have to capitulate or face messy law suit and legal bill.

My point is, it does seem likely (IMHO), that Clare Francis (MC) did in fact whisper this word to MNHQ.

No she didn't, honest. No threats, no pressure, no intimidation. Just a polite request as to whether we would mind removing the C word as it was coming up in Google in juxtaposition to their brand. To be honest we would feel v unreasonable were we not to comply. Cunting Sainsburys never got changed because they never asked! We did, of course, suggest they address the particular concerns raised by the thread in question.

cumfy · 05/10/2010 23:41

Justine

Thanks for clarifying that Clare contacted you and made:

"Just a polite request" :)

Did Clare indicate whether they would look at the case ?

I wonder if mothercare employ someone to constantly google the word 'mothercare' throughout the day to see what comes up. Can just hear that call.
'erm yes boss, it appears the www think we're cunts'

eventide · 06/10/2010 00:46

Do Mothercare pay to advertise on MN by any chance?.......

keepingupwiththejoneses · 06/10/2010 00:49

Do these big companies actually employ someone to surf the internet and look for these things?

RubberDuck · 06/10/2010 08:03

Justine: can you please comment about the Ocado thread?

JustineMumsnet · 06/10/2010 08:07

@eventide

Do Mothercare pay to advertise on MN by any chance?.......

No

JustineMumsnet · 06/10/2010 08:08

@cumfy

Did Clare indicate whether they would look at the case ?

Am sure they would have but I'll check - I didn't speak to her.

JustineMumsnet · 06/10/2010 08:13

@RubberDuck

Justine: can you please comment about the Ocado thread?

Pretty much the same thing happened with Ocado - they asked if we'd mind altering the title. Call us old-fashioned but would seem very impolite to not comply.

CountessDracula · 06/10/2010 09:42

Maybe a lot of cunting Mothercare threads all over other sites would be the way to go...
they would have to be very busy on the phone after that.

RubberDuck · 06/10/2010 09:47

Shame Google Bombing isn't very effective any more...

BecauseImWorthIt · 06/10/2010 09:48

People do get paid to monitor the www - it's important for them to see how their brand/company is being talked about.

I can see why MC would want the title to be changed - but I don't think MN should oblige. Sorry, Justine.

And this is especially the case if the OP's original complaint is not dealt with.

RubberDuck · 06/10/2010 09:50

Agree 100% with BIWI.

lowrib · 06/10/2010 09:57

Scottishmummy - "you think mothercare "monitor" mn?why."

They most likely do.

See this article on the BBC if you're sceptical "Why companies watch your every Facebook, YouTube, Twitter move"

They don't mention mumsnet specifically, but I'd be very surprised if such a large a business specifically targeting parents didn't monitor us, at the very least for mentions of their own brand name.

Stretch · 06/10/2010 09:59

WTF is google bombing?

RubberDuck · 06/10/2010 10:00

Google Bomb

RubberDuck · 06/10/2010 10:01

So you could arrange it that the search term "cunting Mothercare" takes you to the customer services part of their website Grin

FoghornLeghorn · 06/10/2010 10:04

I LOVE that Justine used the word cunting ....

teeheeheeheeheehee Grin

catinthehat2 · 06/10/2010 10:05

Hang on one little minute there.

I think it is purely, as Justine says, down to MN's good manners in deleting this because it's impolite.

We know full well what 7 *'s in a row in a title means now.

If there was a thread entitled "Cunting Catinthehat" I would be pressing that report button repeatedly until it was amended. And I do believe it would be quite quickly.

Don't see the difference.

catinthehat2 · 06/10/2010 10:07

Ah lowrib as you are around, can you please confirm if you are

a) Low Rib, or
b) Lowri B

It has been bothering me for a quite a while

TIA

RubberDuck · 06/10/2010 10:08

It depends why there was a thread entitled "Cunting Catinthehat". I'd probably be less sympathetic if you'd conned £1000 out of someone, tbh.

An offensive title clearly got the attention of someone in Mothercare. But what's really offensive is that the actual complaint didn't.

lowrib · 06/10/2010 10:08

It was the cunting that made me open the thread in the first actually Grin

vbusymum1 · 06/10/2010 10:08

Surely Mothercare would do themselves much more good by coming on and sorting out the original problem rather than complaining about customers complianing.

I was on the BT complaint tread last week and the chairman of BT himself came on and took immediate ownership of the problme.

Clare Francis - I hope you're reading this and will think about whether your priorities are in the right order.

Please have the decency to get it sorted, I didn't read the original thread but now I will thank twice about shopping at Mothercare.

RubberDuck · 06/10/2010 10:09

LOL snap lowrib (and now I'm wondering about your name too).
