www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1317312/Waitrose-forced-ditch-halal-lamb-Duchy-range.html

Why on earth are people objecting so much? Do they really think that the standard method of killing an animal is any less cruel?

Quite mad.

Alouiseg - While your at it could you point out that adding security that creates bigger queues just creates a bigger target area on the ground? That any marginally competent organisation would be able to get liquids airside? And 9/11 was done by 'The Muslims' in the same way that the Tamil Tiger Maoist insurgency suicide bombing was done by 'The Athiests'.

MaMoTTaT · 03/10/2010 19:57

no you said

" I would prefer to have meat that was humanely (imo) slaughtered."

so you'd prefer that someone didn't cook up their home reared chicken for you......

How do you know there wasn't a satanist working in the slaughter house chanting curses over the meat you bought, or someone that believes in pixies dancing round it in the warehouse? Or that the delivery driver wasn't a Christian who said a short prayer before he set off on the road?

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 03/10/2010 19:58

How on earth has this thread descened into using the familes of the victims of 9/11 as emotional blackmail?

You're equating a few prayers over a steak with mass murder?

Come on, you're making a fool of yourself now.

There is no difference in the way the animals are actually slaughtered:

'We do not allow Waitrose animals to be slaughtered without pre-stunning. It is important to note that there are two methods of Halal slaughter; pre-stunned and non-stunned. All Waitrose lamb is pre-stunned and will have been rendered insensible to pain in line with the recommendations from Compassion in World Farming and the RSPCA. We have allowed the halal blessing at the point of slaughter so that abattoirs can sell the parts of the animal that we cannot sell therefore minimising food waste.

Aside from the blessing, the method of slaughter would not differ from non-halal slaughter. Our priority at slaughter for all meat is the welfare of the animal and have insisted that all of our abattoirs are independently assessed by the Humane Slaughter Association which is a voluntary measure.

We have consistently been recognised in the industry as the leaders in animal welfare, having recently won 'Most compassionate supermarket' from Compassion in World Farming. '

MaMoTTaT · 03/10/2010 20:01

right - so what is the difference between than and an Atheist like yourself home rearing a cow/pig/goat/sheep/chicken and killing it yourself, how many would use a stun gun first????

MmeBlueberry · 03/10/2010 20:01

Why pick on me?

I said I do eat Halal meat, but given the choice, I would prefer not to.

I have no wish to eat my next door neighbour's chickens (or eggs) beacuse I know they eat my dog's poo.

Run along now and find someone else to nitpick with.

abr1de · 03/10/2010 20:03

Waitrose do stun the animals first, even under this Halal method.

you haven't answered my question - you talked about them being humanely killed.

So you would prefer not to have a chicken killed, prepared and cooked (and on your plate 3hrs later) - shame - it's lovely when it's that fresh. As that would be killed in the same way (but without the "ritual" - prayer part of it)

MmeBlueberry · 03/10/2010 20:08

I seriously can't be bothered with your stupid questions, Momat. As I said earlier, do run along.

desertgirl · 03/10/2010 20:08

Flook, the halal meat is killed in accordance with UK law, otherwise it wouldn't be legal; AFAIK there isn't a get out from the law which applies to halal slaughter.

Alouiseg, you tell the airports what you like, it may surprise you to know that they aren't only looking for Muslim terrorists.

MaMoTTaT · 03/10/2010 20:09

oh and fyi Alouiseg - I will be the first to hide the thread

Alouiseg · 03/10/2010 20:09

You can't slaughter your own animals in UK. They have to go to a licensed slaughterhouse.

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 03/10/2010 20:11

You can slaughter a chicken.

PinkieMinx · 03/10/2010 20:18

Wouldn't hurt us to all have a little pray a few times a day either would it - I mean how does it really affect us all Hmm

MaMoTTaT · 03/10/2010 20:19

why is it stupid?

You said you'd prefer to eat and animal that has (in your opinion) been humanely killed. You don't consider Halal to be humane.

Halal is pretty much the same as a hand reared/home killed animal - just without the blessing.

I was simply asking whether you would prefer not to eat those animals as well, or is it just the Halal ones?

ilovesprouts · 03/10/2010 20:25

omg glad me and my fam are veggies

Alouiseg · 03/10/2010 20:29

I'm glad we're Atheists.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 03/10/2010 20:30

Why do i need a reason to not want to eat halal?

1 Have you ever seen a Halal butchers! not pretty, i can tell you, the one in south harrow stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 I DON'T WANT TO!

3 I DON'T WANT TO!

I think that about covers it!

This is Great Britain, i don't have to conform if i don't want to

thanks xx
