In our kitchen drawer is a mushroom brush. What the hell are they all about?
I find it easier to peel them
I suppose it is just more crap to fill a kitchen drawer with

Never peel mushrooms - that's bonkers, just flick off some mud - a brush might be useful, but your hands are plenty.

Ice cream scoop can be really good, if you have a good scoop - the Ben & Jerry's one from their factory is excellent, gives nice solid balls even on hard ice cream, which the spoon you're going to eat it with won't.

With square eggs - heart shaped ones are also good (two chopsticks and some rubber bands)

CremeEggThief · 02/03/2012 21:06

Anyone who bothers to wash and/or peel mushrooms is being unreasonable. Fact.
I use my banana tree and ice-cream scoop all the time, but I have never used the microwave omelette making device I picked up a few years ago for a quid or two. And I rarely use the egg slicer or pizza cutter, but DH does. I could also count the number of times I've used my grill on one hand, and we've been here 2 and a half years.

choccyp1g · 02/03/2012 22:14

Poached egg holders are the most -regularly- -bought- useless gadget in this house. I have tried at least 3, and the eggs stick into them all just the same, so you may as well just bung the egg in the boiling water and clean out ONE pan, rather than faffing around and cleaning 4 plastic or metal or glass holders.

choccyp1g · 02/03/2012 22:15

And for the most uselss gadget on mumsnet, I vote for the amusing crossing out. Why the F is it one * but two -- ??? eh???

LentillyFart · 02/03/2012 22:15

More weirdness. Ancient thread bumped to advertise ebay shite?

Frontpaw · 02/03/2012 22:20

Lemon zester. At least, that's what I think it is.

RuleBritannia · 03/03/2012 16:45

A previous poster mentioned a wooden spatula - the sort for use in non-stick pans. Ours is used for scraping wet grass from the bottom of the hover lawn mower. Never was used in the kitchen.

ZOMBIE

THREAD

GinPalace · 03/03/2012 16:48

I was given a flexible 3 inch rubbery tube for xmas once. From my mum. Apparently you put a garlic clove in and roll it round to get the skin off. It doesn't work. That was a very useless gadget and went in the bin, sorry mum.

GinPalace · 03/03/2012 16:49

still its alive again now isn't it. :)

GinPalace · 03/03/2012 16:50

I quite enjoyed fessing my xmas pressy hatred - where else could I do that in RL. Grin

Incidentally how do zombie threads get out of the grave?

trixymalixy · 03/03/2012 16:55

Gin I got one of those the year before last for Xmas and it is brilliant. Peeling garlic cloves was one of my most hated jobs and the silicon garlic peeler does it so quickly and easily.

GinPalace · 03/03/2012 16:58

Really!!! I tried to use it I really did! It took ages and still had flakes clinging to it - I got rage in the end. I don't find it a bad job to do without the gadget though. What a funny tipsytopsy world we live in. Grin

Trills · 03/03/2012 17:02

Haha, I was enjoying reading this thread and saw that I had already posted on it!

GinPalace · 03/03/2012 17:10

trills Grin like back to the future!

daisyrain · 03/03/2012 17:18

I rub the mushroom half heartedly on my clothes for about 2 seconds to get the mud off & dont care if it isn't.

Then quiz DP as to why he leaves mud on spuds?

:(

lesley33 · 03/03/2012 17:31

I use my mushroom brush a lot - great for small mushrooms that are too fiddly to peel

LentillyFart · 03/03/2012 17:45

What kind of fruit loop peels mushrooms?

trixymalixy · 03/03/2012 17:47

Really gin!! When I opened it I was a bit Hmm, but it works really well.

Mushroom brushes however I really don't see the point of....

Shutupanddrive · 03/03/2012 18:56

Those poached egg things are ridiculous, why not just use a pan of water and get a nice slightly runny egg instead of a plastic, hard round one?

GavisconJunkie · 03/03/2012 19:12

I love cooking and do a lot. I also love mushrooms. I can honestly say I have never ever heard of a mushroom brush! Nor had I heard of a strawberry huller.

I now want one of these, guess which one?

aquashiv · 03/03/2012 19:17

Egg cups.

Shutupanddrive · 03/03/2012 19:24

Egg cups? What do you put your boiled egg in then aquashiv? I have found shot glasses come in handy!

Dolcelatte · 03/03/2012 20:12

Egg 'helter skelter' - and soup maker which is a kettle with a stirrer which doesn't quite reach the bottom, so you end up with a lot of gooey stuff (now consigned to the cupboard and taking up valuable space). Both bought by DH who likes gadgets. And let's not mention the toast implements - basically, you use these on a slice of buttered toast to create an imprint of a heart, I love you....well, it was a nice thought, I suppose.
Oh and there's the cup which you plug into your computer to keep your cup of coffee heated....
Also, an egg timer which changes colour according to how you want your eggs bolied - soft or hard - but they always come out the same.
But yes to pizza cutters!

GinPalace · 03/03/2012 20:17

trixymalixy ahhhh - the silicone tube thing is brill.... it's me who is useless

My lemon zester on the other hand - invaluable!!

There is a gadget to keep your coffee heated at the computer???!!! Dolcelatte you have opened my eyes.
