In our kitchen drawer is a mushroom brush. What the hell are they all about?
I find it easier to peel them
I suppose it is just more crap to fill a kitchen drawer with

Fiveinthebed, I'd love that. Not for strawberries but tomatoes. I have lost count of the number of times I have gagged when I get a bit of tomato belly button on my clacker.
The most useless thing I've got knocking around is a cherry stoner. We lived in Switzerland and our area was famed for cherry production. That's my excuse for foolhardiness anyway.

Quenelle · 24/09/2010 12:58

Life's definitely too short. I usually just knock the larger lumps off and slice. It's clean mud they grow them in anyway.

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/09/2010 12:58

I don't wash, peel or brush my mushrooms.

I just chop 'em up, flicking off any large bits of dirt.

I am still alive and well.

Scootergrrrl · 24/09/2010 12:59

Proud - she just tosses it all together and roasts them, although if using a frying pan, she heats the oil first. Go, you culinary innovator, you!

proudnglad · 24/09/2010 13:00

Grin Thanks Scoot

southeastastra · 24/09/2010 13:00

a pizza wheel

MrsMellowdrummer · 24/09/2010 13:00

Grin at clean mud, Quenelle!

(I know what you mean though!)

minipie · 24/09/2010 13:01

Grin Heracles

no really

it's one of these

no more cracked boiled eggs (or waiting for them to get to room temp)

ForgottenTomato · 24/09/2010 13:02

I'm with those who just remove the big bits of dirt from mushrooms.

Shh, don't tell DH. He'd have me soaking them for a week in dettol if he could.

grottielottie · 24/09/2010 13:03

Does DH count as a useless kitchen utensil?

nocake · 24/09/2010 13:04

The most utterly useless kitchen utensil is an Alessi Juicy Salif juicer. Not only is it ridiculously expensive but it also slips on the work surface, distributes juice everywhere except into the bowl underneath and starts corroding the moment anything acidic (like fruit juice) touches it.

orienteerer · 24/09/2010 13:04

My MiL has given me an avocado slicer and an electric egg boilerConfused. Both useless.

randomimposter · 24/09/2010 13:05

I HATE hulling strawberries. I'm off to Lakeland to buy one of those to fill the space left from chucking my mushroom brush...

Shodan · 24/09/2010 13:06

Thank god for Quenelle and GetOrf.

I was sitting here wondering why anyone would attempt to clean a mushroom.

Then I thought maybe I was a bit of a slattern. And alone in my slatternly ways, to boot.

But now I can rest easy.

AMumInScotland · 24/09/2010 13:06

I'm tempted by the strawberry huller, but even more by the garlic peeler displayed on the same page. Does anyone have one of them, and if so does it work? I hate getting the peel off the wretched stuff!

orienteerer · 24/09/2010 13:06

southeastastra - I use our pizza wheel every week, so much easier than a knife

mumeeee · 24/09/2010 13:06

You are not suppopsed to peel or wash mushrooms apparently it removes a lot of the nutriants, Just wipe with kitchen towel.

SweetnessAndShite · 24/09/2010 13:08

Not only Lakeland to blame for this but also Betterware! I have a ridiculous bread knife with a metal guide attached that's supposed to help you cut a straight slice. What a load of tosh...

And I'm with GOML. I don't wash, peel or brush mushrooms. If they're being cooked I figure the heat will do enough of a cleaning job (plus I'm lazy!)

Shodan · 24/09/2010 13:08

Aha.

I see ForgottenTomato is also One Of Us.

(But then, maybe the clue was in the name?)

muggglewump · 24/09/2010 13:10

I love the toaster bags. I got mine from Poundland though so no bother if they'd been crap.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 24/09/2010 13:14

Electric egg boiler (with automatic cutoff when done) is helpful for some people (e.g. my father, who has Parkinson's and is a bit iffy with boiling things on a hob), but I agree pretty much a waste of time for the general population.

bamboostalks · 24/09/2010 13:15

If you go to Holland, you'll find everyone with electric egg boilers but not electric kettles.

differentnameforthis · 24/09/2010 13:16

minipie, you don't need that! Use a metal spoon in to lower the eggs in the water & leave it in there.

Never had a cracked egg. Just leave the spoon to cool before you take it out!
