I love watching most stand up, but God that man makes my teeth chang. I can't even watch him for more than a minute. He just laughs the whole time and walks around a lot.

Am I missing something?

Where are the laughs? At the end?

I mean...sell out tours???

Que?

I love Michael McIntyre. It's refreshing to see a comedian who can be funny without it being at someone else's expense. Agree that his mannerisms can sometimes grate.

Tommy Tiernan may have been funny once (although personally I could never stand him) but it's been many years since he last was. Billy Connolly has gradually disappeared up his own very wealthy arse. Ricky Gervais is just creepy.

Dara O Briain is fab though. His live shows are great as so much of them are improvised from audience participation that they all quite different.

lolcat · 15/09/2010 10:38

are all quite different

cupcakesandbunting · 15/09/2010 10:41

Also hated Rhod Gilbert at first but after he put in a guest host appearance on Buzzcocks, he grew on me. I could listen to that voice all day. Preferably whispering obscenties into my lughole.

15 Storeys High.

"Hello Mum. It's your third youngest Errol here. The Chinese one. Did Barry get that job? He's the one with the lisp. I hope so, I like him.

mangoandlime · 15/09/2010 10:56

haha! @ 'Weak lemon drink' !!

FellatioNelson · 15/09/2010 11:21

I've not watched a whole Jimmy Carr routine, but what I have seen has left me squriming uncomfortably. He has something of the smug school bully about him I think. Plus I can't stand looking at his face.

OrmRenewed · 15/09/2010 11:22

He's reasonable funny. Like comedy wallpaper/.

ProfYaffle · 15/09/2010 11:37

I've just added 15 storeys to my Lovefilm list - thanks.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 15/09/2010 11:50

:)

mayorquimby · 15/09/2010 11:54

I went to Jimmy Carr last week and laughed a lot.
Different strokes and all that

NordicPrincess · 15/09/2010 12:03

i really really fancy michael mcintyre...hes lovely...

FellatioNelson · 15/09/2010 12:05

He reminds me a bit of an ex-BF actually.

kveta · 15/09/2010 12:22

Michael McIntyre is ok - saw one of his stand up shows though and it wasn't as good as we expected. I think he's great in short bursts - like Rhod Gilbert and Frankie boyle, who aren't all that in proper length shows, bu are fine in bitesized chunks. Latest Eddie Izzard shows have been very disappointing.

current likes are: Dara O'Briain (he is AMAZING), Ed Byrne - Different Class was good, Russel Howard, Sean Lock (nearly crashed listening to one of his shows on CD), Bill Bailey - used to be good, was not convinced by Tinselworm, and will watch his latest with an open mind, but Part Troll had whole audience crying with laughter! I like that glaswegian bloke Kevin Bridges too - but I do just love the accent more than anything else.

DH likes Jack Dee too - but that's partly because DH is not a native English speaker, so needs comics to enunciate clearly so he can understand them!

Lee Mack and Lee Evans are both dreadful, and Jimmy Carr and Ricky Gervais just leave me cold.

upahill · 15/09/2010 13:31

kveta Why do you think Lee Mack is dreadful?

Everyone I know seens to love him round here.

Could it be a northern thing?

upahill · 15/09/2010 13:32

I don't think anyone has mentioned Peter Kay?
What's you're thoughts?

knit1purl1 · 15/09/2010 13:34

Fifteen Storeys is sublime.

I didn't think so much of Dara O'Briain until hearing him on Infinite Monkey Cage. So maybe sometimes it is a comedian's non-comedy persona that effects what we think about their act? Perhaps that's why MMc irritates me - is it a)because he seems like a kid who grew up wanting to be a famous comedian and copying mannerisms from his heroes or b) maybe he really isn't that funny.

I'm going to go with b) and cut my weak lemon drink with a shot of Blue Rat

knit1purl1 · 15/09/2010 13:39

upahill - don't know what others think but Lee Mack is obviously a clever comic. In which case why does he need to fall back on tired homophobic/sexist bollocks to get a laugh? Jimmy Carr is often the same and only Stephen Fry ever calls him on it.

Excitingly inventive homophobic/sexist provocation, now you're talking.

mayorquimby · 15/09/2010 13:41

"I don't think anyone has mentioned Peter Kay?"

funny enough on Phoenix Nights and the first time he toured his material about ten years ago.
However having released the exact same dvd 3 times and toured the exact same set 3 times I must admit I've lost any respect I had for him as a comedian.

kveta · 15/09/2010 13:44

I just don't like him upahill - his material is drab, and his voice grates. DH doesn't mind him though - it's more me that finds him tiresome. and didn't he write that atrociously bad so-called sitcom Not Going Out (or something along those line)? even the trailers for that left me agape at just how unfunny they were. It made Miranda seem sublime in comparison.

Also not a fan of Peter Kay, although like you say, may be a north/south thing. I'm from Glasgow, but now live near London, so just don't really get a lot of the northern comedians.

Docbunches · 15/09/2010 13:45

I love Peter Kay. He has the rare talent, IMO, of being a both great comedy actor and stand-up comedian. The only other person I can think of who does this really well is Robin Williams (of course there must be loads more examples, just can't think of anyone!).

ProfYaffle · 15/09/2010 13:59

I used to really like Peter Kay, saw him years ago before he was famous hosting Sing Along Sound of Music at the Lowry, then saw him on the Mum wants a Bungalow tour when it very first kicked off.

Loved him.

But I agree, he appears to have outed himself as a one trick pony. Desperately needs new material.

Sean Lock was amazing live, I was in pain from the laughter and very nearly drowned in my own snot.

Oblomov · 15/09/2010 14:08

I like Peter Kaye.
I also, independantly, find him very very attractive. as I do Phil Jupitus. But then I have always liked big funny men. very odd.

FellatioNelson · 15/09/2010 14:10

I don;t find Peter Kay attractive at all, but I do find Phil Jupitus attractive. OB, what are your thought son Danny Baker.Grin

upahill · 15/09/2010 14:16

Oblomov. If you like big funny men you may like Ben Verth who I came across at the Edinburgh Fringe.

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/09/2010 14:20

I don't think Peter Kay is that funny (think you have to be noprthern to get 'put the big light on') but his delivery is good. Think though (based entirely on his brits performance) that he is a miserable nasty bastard underneath all the bonhomie.

I never used to think MM was funny, but he has grown on me.

Jimmy Carr - urgh. His face is like the Pilsbury Gough Boy made large. Like David Walliams. I imagine that their waxworks in madame Tussauds look more realistic than they do.

Funniest comedians - currenly, Dara o'Braiain (sp). And Billy Connolly of years ago - his drunken walks makes me laugh just thinking about it. And that young Glaswegian chappy.

I loathe Lee Evans - find him really creepy. What the bloody hell is he on also to sweat like that?
