To disown DD or move to Hampshire immediately?

She came home from first day in Y1 at (Greater London) school yesterday and said "Teacher arksed me"...

ShockShock

My inner pedant is appalled.

DH's reaction is to want us to move "back" to his neck of the woods so she grows up speaking proper, like. Is he over-reacting? Wink

If she'll end up with the Portsmouth accent then yes. If he means near Winchester however, then no.

thisisyesterday · 10/09/2010 11:35

no, he is not over-reacting! move immediately!!!

emmyloulou · 10/09/2010 11:41

You would actively want a Hampshire accent? I have travelled a fair bit and live in more affluent home counties and everyone says ,my accent is a cross between a cockney and a farmer.

The Portsmouth accent in particular is horrific.

jeee · 10/09/2010 11:43

I would agree entirely with your DH. However, I believe that one finds a better class of accent in Surry.

lamplighter · 10/09/2010 11:45

I am from Hampshire - send her to me - I shall do the whole Henry Higgins/Eliza Doolittle.

She will never drop an aitch again. I promise.

jeee · 10/09/2010 11:45

Ummm... Surrey Blush. That's what you get from living in areas of less desirable accents.

Lovecat · 10/09/2010 11:53

:o jeee

I totally agree re. Portsmouth.

DH grew up just outside Basingstoke and speaks in a very posh BBC announcer-stylee (think a masculine Liz Hurley-type accent - she was in his class in primary school - tis his claim to fame!). I'm from the NW btw, and although I talk 'correctly' apparently I don't say bath and path in an acceptable manner - shame, cause we could buy a mansion up there for what we've got down here!

Right, the house is going on the market... although given yesterday's thread about the state of the housing market, I may have to take you up on your offer in the meantime, lamplighter!

Hey stop this Portsmouth bashing Wink
I lived there till I was 21, I admit I have moved away but there are some people that hide it well I admit it does slip out on occasions though. My mum has a very strong pompey accent my DH from Manchester cannot understand her Grin

lamplighter · 10/09/2010 12:08

lovecat

Good decision - I shall fetch the chair to tie her to teach her deportment

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/09/2010 12:12

What is a pompey accent then?

DD came home from school and said 'awright, blood' to me. I don't even know what that means.

emmyloulou · 10/09/2010 12:23

Pompey accent is similar to a cockneys with a farmer twang so I have been told on my travels.

It's hard to tell the difference between it and a thick London accent.

MrsMellowdrummer · 10/09/2010 12:25

Lovecat, did your husband go to Kempshott infant/juniors? I was there too, but not in the same year as the lovely Liz...

wonka · 10/09/2010 12:25

LOL GetOrf
The beautifull sons of an Irish mother call her 'muummy' not Mammy and are begining to sound a bit like Worzel Gummage Hmm

pompadourprincess · 10/09/2010 12:26

I was just about to post the same thing Loulou, strange as pompey's not that close to london but it is an island ( motorways join portsea island to mainland) so it does have its own little thing going on, I actually miss living there a bit.

MrsMellowdrummer · 10/09/2010 12:28

.... and my accent is highly educated, of course! Wink

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/09/2010 12:30

Is Portsmouth an island??

Christ, what a lot of things I don't know.

MrsMellowdrummer · 10/09/2010 12:32

Tis an island yes, GetOrf...

Just joined to the mainland, mainly by the M27.

SnailWhaleTail · 10/09/2010 12:32

I could post a similar message and we live in Hampshire!

DS1 is developing a VILE Pompey accent, he keeps saying 'Oi mate, that fing's moiine...' and I keeps saying in brittle tones 'Haven't', 'Home', etc.

He is 5. The shame.

emmyloulou · 10/09/2010 12:33

Or you can use the Gosport ferry.......ahh the memories.

SnailWhaleTail · 10/09/2010 12:34

OMG I have developed it too!

I honestly don't 'Keeps saying...' I just 'Keep saying...'

Bonkerz · 10/09/2010 12:36

i grew up in basingstoke and my accent has been called posh before although i now live in leicester and get laughed at for the way i pronounce things!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 10/09/2010 12:38

Whale Island is in Portsmouth - I think it's an actual island.

Arksed is just dialect - I'm sure my friend's grandma used to say it back in the 80s.

You should move to Bristol. Lovely accent there, OP Grin

MrsDinky · 10/09/2010 12:40

if they start saying "I wants to go..." then there is no hope.

I used to live in Pompey and can slip back into it when I'm back there, aaargh.

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/09/2010 12:40

I love the Bristolian accent. It's great. Combined with the fact that 99% of Bristolians are friendly and will stand there and chat to you.

I love the place - used to work there.

MrsDinky · 10/09/2010 12:43

Portsmouth is on Portsea Island, joined by 3 roads to mainland, at low Tide only divided by about a metre of water. whale Island is next to it.
