FGS!!! Come and tell DH that toilet brushes are DISGUSTING

thebrownstuff · 05/09/2010 21:43

I know that we've had this toilet brush conversation numerous times....but, Please come and let DH know that I am not being unreasonable to have put our toilet brush in the outside shed.

The sight of toilet brushes makes me feel sick. I bought those clip on flushable toilet brush thingys which I think is the more hygenic and pleasant approach to getting rid of the shit as it were Grin DH claims that everyone he knows owns/uses toilet brushes Hmm

Namechanged for this as I don't want DH (yes you) to know my regular name. Go easy on him as the argument has come up while he's making himself useful cleaning the bathroom, so it's not all craziness from him.

Wow, I didn't even know you could buy disposable toilet brushes! That's outrageous! And expensive.

stubbornhubby · 06/09/2010 16:48

i get the impression many of you women are cleaning the toilet not just for yourselves, but also for all the other members of the family, who leave their skidmarks behind.

beyond toddler age surely every family member should clean up after themselves, and surely the toilet brush is the easiest and simplest thing for the even the clumsiest cludger to wield...

I wouldn't like to see my DS struggling with clip in clip out disposable thingies... but a toilet brush, well that's pretty straightforward.

ChippingIn · 06/09/2010 16:55

DomesticG0ddess - how much are they?

Minipie & Sloany - yes they have them in Germany too - they are great for no skids etc and the flush is good - but they are a lot more whiffy while you're using them!!

sloanypony · 06/09/2010 16:55

Agreed, Stubbornhubby.

DomesticG0ddess · 06/09/2010 17:09

I don't know how much they are, but any product like that which you buy over your lifetime instead of a one off purchase like a bog brush, is an unnecessary cost and therefore expensive! Perhaps you can enlighten me. And I would say the environmental cost is pretty hefty too.

ChippingIn · 06/09/2010 17:16

DG Since when is a toilet brush a one off purchase? Surely even the most dedicated brush user replaces every now and then? and enviromental cost - stones & glass houses really isn't it? I'm sure there are things that you do that impact the enviroment that others don't do...

megonthemoon · 06/09/2010 17:16

I could write what I think but sloanypony has said it all for me :)

A rinsed loo brush is surely much less of a germ hazard than changing nappies with the high likelihood of getting it on your hands/clothes/whatever and I'm sure a very high percentage of us on mumsnet have changed a very large number of nappies... Did all you loo brush haters bleach your babies' bottoms to get rid of the germs or something? :o

elterwater · 06/09/2010 17:26

DomesticGoddess - I too didnt know you could buy disposable toilet brushes. Although I am quite happy with my duck thingy (using a wad of paper so no CF).

DomesticG0ddess · 06/09/2010 18:21

I am sure there are ChippingIn (although actually you have no idea how I live do you!), lets not get into that old chestnut. I was simply surprised that they even exist and seem a bit of a costly gimmick to me. On my toilet brushes you can change the head so no, I certainly wouldn't buy another bog brush as they're stainless steel and rather stylish I might add Grin. But anyway, what a conversation to be having!

Triphid · 06/09/2010 18:34

I had no idea that I might be so judged by having a loo brush...

As it happens, I've been reveiwing whether or not I should have one as I've just moved house and threw out my last one (it was time anyway).

And now I just don't know what to do! I simply can't imagine not being able to do some scrubbing. And those disposable things you've been describing sound ridiculous.

The thought of chucking even more bleach down the loo as an alternative to a brush seems all wrong on many levels.

Wondering if the least evil of all is to continue doing what I always have. Only I didn't know I was being so judged!

ValiumSingleton · 06/09/2010 18:35

I agree. My mother uses them. Nobody with any knowledge of micro biology at all would touch them (literally).

vile.

sloanypony · 06/09/2010 18:36

To be honest, I dont want to diss anyone for using a disposable Toilet Duck flushable thingy if they are more comfortable with that method and it works for them, though there probably is an environmental cost, there is too for disposable nappies, bleach, tumble dryers, I for one have found since becoming a parent I have done a lot more environmental "bad" than before.

But if people (like me) have tried them and they HAVEN'T done the job for them, and HAVEN'T made their toilet clean, I dont see why I should get grief for using a method that does work for me and that does get my toilet clean.

Bleach alone doesn't do it. Toilet duck doesn't do it. So I choose to use a toilet brush and a bit of cleaner/bleach which DOES work. Hence my toilet is cleaner than it otherwise would be. Is that so wrong?

I know it's not, but think about it. Dont be so superior. It works for you. Great. This works for me. My toilet is clean.

Triphid · 06/09/2010 18:53

But Valium surely anyone with any knowledge of microbiology would also feel the same way about touching the door handles of toilet doors? Honest question. A scarey number of people don't wash their hands after going to the loo...

Maybe I digress.

NotanOtter · 06/09/2010 21:07

valium oooh do give us the gory details. I cannot believe those who say they are hygienic

I have ALOT of people in my house and clean loos without lo brushes- this DOES involve bleach but if loos are cleaned everyday where is the problem

caked on poo is a rare occurrence in our house and i wonder ( genuinely) why that is?

I don't NEED a brush...

notsocrates · 06/09/2010 21:36

YABU

I have a loo brush in every bathroom in the house. They are functional.

I would hate to have some permanent squirty chemical thing in my loo. Yuk, that would be nearly as bad as air fresheners. Double yuk, but perhaps that is a whole other thread.....

Mind you, a disposable brush sounds interesting (who knew?). They should do that with nappies too.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 07/09/2010 08:07

Valium - what's your knowledge of microbiology? My fil and sil, both microbiologists, seem to manage ok with toilet brushes. They probably just, you know, wash their hands afterwards.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 07/09/2010 08:11

Anyway, i reckon you all just need to eat more fibre.

NotanOtter · 08/09/2010 19:30

looked at one in costa today and nearly vomited
uggins of gopping loo roll all festering at room temperature

no ta - not in my bathroom!

ValiumSingleton · 08/09/2010 20:15

I wash my hands too Confused

After I've flushed and opened the door. Do I have to say what my 'qualifications' are? Irish qualifications you wouldn't recognise.

emmanana · 08/09/2010 20:50

Asda value toilet brushes are 59p each. Not exactly beautiful, plain white plastic. I replace mine at least every fortnight, if not weekly. And on the days in between, as I put bleach in the loo as I'm going out, I leave the brush submerged in the bleachy water. When I do the deep clean of the bathroom once a week, I just drop the old loo brush and holder in a bag, and straight in the dustbin...

ChippingIn · 09/09/2010 00:04

Emmanana - if you are doing that, you should have a look at the disposable ones and see what you think of them, they don't have such an impact on the environment as throwing away a whole brush and container.

cleanloo · 10/08/2012 09:08

Hi everyone, why are you all still using disgusting toilet brushes?
There is now a brand new product called a ToiletMaid which is just a blade no messy bristles! simples!! even my errant husband now cleans the loo after himself. What bliss.

Chattymummyhere · 10/08/2012 09:45

No Loo brush here, we just chuck a bottle of bleach in it every time...

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 10/08/2012 09:57

Hi cleanloo, fancy you coming along and reviving a two year old thread just to plug your product! Woweee! Hmm

shewhowines · 10/08/2012 09:58

Bleach works for me.

Toilet Brushes are so so so so so gross.

Maybe some of you have nice shiny clean ones, but all I can see in my minds eye, are the scummy shitty ones left to fester by the toilet that you are expected to sit on. Yuck
