the thread titles are all so serious and worthy and make me feel frivolous and unsisterly.

Because some of us don't like shouting.

Goblinchild · 29/08/2010 09:39

Some of us are fighting other battles in RL, and are up for debates but don't relish a shouting match with strangers on the interweb.
Come over to SN and tell me my son shouldn't be in mainstream, and you'll hear me shout. Grin
Or tell me that Feminist principles don't belong in a classroom to my face.
But yelling at other women because their views of how the world should be and how to achieve it aren't mine?
I save my anger for those I perceive as blocking the way, not those travelling a different path to the same destination.

I hid it months ago. I found it negatively affected my blood pressure, and I have enough real life stuff for that. I dislike being pigeon-holed.

'Goblinchild - If I ever shouted you down. I apologise. That is never my intention. I like debate but if I have ever over-stepped the line I do sincerely apologise.'

I mustn't have made myself clear enough.

If the majority of the posts on the feminist board where similar in style to yours, I would be as regular a poster as I am on the sn boards.
You are exactly the sort of academic, civilised and reasoned debater that I would want to engage with.
Or to put it another way :
SGM You Rock!

Ha ha Sorky...I wont need them...they don't read my posts.

I'm with Margaret Thatcher, she said feminism had done nothing for her..( or words to that effect) so, if the most powerful woman this country has ever had thinks like me - I'm doing alright..

PedlarsSpanner · 29/08/2010 09:50

part of it is the throwing around of academic credentials, you know, the I studied this, I did my phd in that, I have done research in the other (I saw this yesterday on the rape within marriage thread)

certainly makes me and my university of life education and experience feel inadequate, not up to the job of debating, irrelevant even so I don't bother

sorky · 29/08/2010 09:52

Well I've posted a thread up about the Feminax advert being unacceptable because of it's double standards.

Know what Ive been told? Lighten up!

You can't have it both ways. You can't defend the men bashing accusations aimed at the Fem topic and laugh at an advert because it ridicules the opposite sex.

If the person ejected from the window was a woman there'd be hell on!

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 29/08/2010 09:53

To be fair, DP, you're generally accused of being a troll at least once per thread you're on.

Not by me, of course, cause I've met you before and know you actually do believe the stuff you type. Smile

don't be intimidated by PhDs etc., they are often wrong
"an ounce of common sense is worth a pound of theory"

daftpunk · 29/08/2010 10:06

This is it sorky, it's all so hypocritical and full of double standards. Not sure if you posted on the the thread about the feminist who protested at a funeral (the deceased was a man who slept with prostitutes).....it was on that thread I realized I was talking to people who were militant to the point of obsessional...it was time to get out and hide their threads.

I hope if a man protests at Germaine Greer's funeral they'll be as forgiving....but I very much doubt it.

Crazycatlady · 29/08/2010 10:07

YANBU.

I have browsed the feminist boards a couple of times and it reminded me why I don't ever want to be labelled as a feminist. It's the all-woman, anti-men agenda that's so alarming. And it's so angry.

It's a shame, as there are situations and circumstances where women are still at a disadvantage, but I don't think feminism of the sort displayed in the feminist forum is going to do them any favours.

All the shouting and hand wringing about rape and abuse and the 'patriarchy' sounds faintly ridiculous coming from a bunch of women who are safe at home in their cosy houses with a steady income and happy life. And bleating on about the vote etc is just old news. It turns people off.

An inclusive, forward-looking, positive agenda to discuss the role of women in today's world would be interesting and relevant, but that's not what the feminist forum seems to be all about.

thank you claig

I was half-expecting to be told in no uncertain terms that no one can make one feel inferior without one's consent or some such

sorky · 29/08/2010 10:10

I didn't see it DP. Will have a search later on.

daftpunk · 29/08/2010 10:11

For many, Germaine Greer is synonymous with feminism. Crazy nuts like Lorena Bobbitt have been hailed as feminist heroes. Like it or not, feminism has become associated with man-hating, and the number of man-hating groups is growing and growing - just google. For that reason, it wouldn't be a surprise to see male protesters at Greer's funeral. I doubt they'd bother, but hey ho.
