the thread titles are all so serious and worthy and make me feel frivolous and unsisterly.

Me too! It's been very interesting. Also off to bed as the cats and DD will no doubt be up before 6... night all

Biology makes men and women different. Evolution and history have had their effect. Women can do anything they want these days. Truly. If they want to put in the time and effort. Shit, you can even go to war!

To me, then we get back to biology. Many women WANT to dedicate themselves to their babies. There is nothing wrong with that. So why is the measure of success to have equal numbers in the boardroom? Why is the measure of success not to have happy people doing what they want? CEO vs SAHM. Why is one considered to be worthier than the other? Just down to cold hard cash? Surely not?

MillyR · 29/08/2010 22:09

Sammi, yes I was being a bit lazy and not bothering to write a fuller explanation in the first place, or maybe I was hoping someone would explain for me!

But yes, Lenin, what happens in society is shaped by society.

Porto - the worthiness of SAHM vs WOHM isn't debated on the feminist forum half as much as elsewhere on mn.

if i went on pushchair forum and shouted anti-bugaboo at any one who didn't love the 4 wheeled, multicoloured fully accessorised cart...that would be funny

Sammyuni · 29/08/2010 22:15

To be honest Portofino there isn't much SAHM V WOHM thing on the feminist section that's one thing that they are not guilty of in fact many of the frequent posters are self confessed SAHM and there isn't much negativity to anyone because of that.

Portofino · 29/08/2010 22:17

msrisotto, that is an example only. But issues to do with pay and women at the top is a constant topic. The issue about the type of jobs women can/do do vs the careers that we should have is a big thing.

I never mentioned WOHM vs SAHM. I was more commenting on the notion that we have equality when we have 50/50 at the boss level. I do believe that we have less women at boss level, not because of the oppressive patriarchy, but because more women actually prefer to concentrate their attention on their children.

Appletrees · 29/08/2010 22:26

It works both ways and people should have another go at it if they've been put off before.

Made myself thoroughly obnoxious at the start because I was so irritated by what I saw (and still see) as a terrible distancing and sealing off of debate from the real shitty horrible shitty shit that is life for millions of women throughout the world.

I really didn't give a gnat's gonads for the topics under discussion and it pissed me off that women claiming the feminist crown didn't show any interest outside them. (do bear in mind this is hardly an objective account...)

However I would day it's worth persevering.

To all those saying, oh it's so mean to moan without naming.. I think you're a bit misguided.. tis only now I'm registering the subtle differences between the regular posters and - even - register their names. So I would suggest it DOEs feel like a general bugger off from a vague group and is not about individuals.

Ps who said about the italics? I quite agree.

Appletrees · 29/08/2010 22:33

"self confessed" sahm?

That's a bit revealing. Blimey. Bless me father for I have sinned:)

scottishmummy · 29/08/2010 22:34

Two-thirds of mums are in employment. More than two thirds of working-age women with dependent children (68 per cent) were in employment in the second quarter of 2008. so isnt factual to say "more women actually prefer to concentrate their attention on their children" not borne out by official stats

Portofino · 29/08/2010 22:50

Scottishmummy, I have a FT job and it could be said career. I could have gone for umpteen "better" jobs but I prefer to be home after school for my small child.

There is no feminist issue at play here. If I and DH do full on career thing, then I have to pay someone to look after dd. I choose not to. I WANT to pick her up from school and have that time.

And I think about those opportunities to spend weekdays in NY, and drink cosmopolitans and could cry, but it is still my choice! Not the oppressive patriarchy.

Western thought is heavily influenced by dialectical materialism, which is based on binary opposites iirc? Also all that Foucault-type stuff and Derrida, Self and Other etc. That might explain the tendency to see the world in these terms more than science per se.

That is quite possibly the wankiest post I have ever written.

scottishmummy · 29/08/2010 23:20

im hugely influenced by need to pay mortgage, shop, and do what i want.i live in a 1st world culture of course capitalism is pervasive.and i chose how i participate.i xhose not to give it all up,down size, less consumer durables.because i dont want to

SM, I made a choice a long time ago not to matyr myself on the altar of mmummy and to continue to earn the dosh. And I still do. Then, I HAD to. These days it is more of a lifestyle choice, but dd is in school. Heh. What e;se am I going to do with myself.....I get headhunted though but never go for it....
