the thread titles are all so serious and worthy and make me feel frivolous and unsisterly.

the transgender studies reader (stryker/little) is good. some historical stuff in there too - different cultural perspectives, how cross-dressing was viewed as a strength in different societies etc etc. and then some up to date theoretical/ social stuff.

msrisotto · 29/08/2010 21:10

The incidence of Intersex people and how it is covered up with surgery and stuff makes me question a lot of binary gender constructs.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 29/08/2010 21:11

MillyR, apparently you can get various religious humanists! I had no idea till just now, but I guess there's no reason why not.

Thanks OLKN. I don't think in general in life I would need to declare myself as a particular thing. If I had to describe my beliefs I would say that I am interested in a number of social justice campaigns, but I would not call myself a humanist because it is very much a philosophical stance. I am more interested in the ethics of collective and revolutionary practice. But I think any of us could be any of those things and still be a feminist as well.

skintbint · 29/08/2010 21:18

that's why i'm so intrigued... why?

I am relaxed posting here,it's less shouty and less accusing than other forum,Easier going. Unfortunately, the other thread is harder going. The lists of statistics and links to must read book lists, as if can only achieve consciousness by reading and citing them.

I don't blame Science, but then I am biased. I think the pushing into 2 categories is a consequence of the legal system and capitalism.

Are you being sarcastic LG? I am sure what I said didn't really make much sense as I offered no explanation as to why! But perhaps you just have the background to know why I am blaming capitalism.

I reckon the pushing of the 2 categories goes a long way back. Firstly, as children learn about the world, they have to categorise things just to be able to get by as it would be far too complex to comprehend everything at their stage. Similarly, I think the pushing of 2 categories is pushed by medical science which was biased when technology was limited compared to now and scientists went about 'proving' this that and the other and weren't looking it from the angle of - maybe there isn't a binary split. As a society now, we're almost too invested in this to go back on it.

TiggyD · 29/08/2010 21:54

Lots of feminists arguing over who agrees with themselves the most. Everybody who doesn't agree with them stays clear. Think I'll give it a ms.

Goodnight.Smile

msrisotto · 29/08/2010 21:59

course it is yeah I agree because there are so many other countries which don't subscribe to the binary gender thing. But it is a way of thinking about it which does make sense to me.
