To think that skinny doesn't equal pretty?

One of the prettiest most attractive women I know, is not super skinny, a size 14 she is. Lovely curves and a beautiful face.

A girl I know said about her today 'Yeah, she'd be lovely if she was skinny' Hmm

No, she's lovely the way she is. And whilst there are plenty of very slim women who are stunning, I dont think that you have to neccesarily be skinny.

Unfortunately it seems that in this society you have to be really thin to be considered beautiful and glamourous. I am a size 12, and spend so much time feeling worthless because I'm not as thin as I'd like to be, and that's not right is it. Im happy with every other aspect and that's enough for me!

So to all women who are not as small as maybe they want to be, you can still be just as beautiful, the most stunning woman I know is a size 14.

No, I don't think that skinny makes you facially pretty, but I do think that being very fat quite often hides a pretty face behind rolls of blubber.

And before you all pile on me Grin I say that as a woman who was not so many years ago, 36 stone.

I know what I am talking about.

I don't think I'd like a nice arse at 80

MandyMcFly · 13/08/2010 23:08

Would you consider a size 14 'fat' though? I mean its not super skinny but I dont think it would detract away from an attractive woman.

People are so obsessed about size. Surely it depends on the proportion of the body.
Size 14 is not fat,but a person who is 5ft3inch and under may look slightly overweight.

FallingWithStyle · 13/08/2010 23:17

I was thinking about this the other nght when I watched that vic andbob programme.

Ulkrika Johnson and Penny Smith were on it. I imagine they are roughly the same age and were both considered gorgeous when they were younger, and while they're both still really attractive women with lovely figures I definitely found myself thinking that Penny Smith would look much more attractive (or more sexy perhaps?) if she were slimmer. Or skinny I suppose, as she's certainly not fat.

I feel like a right twat posting that Blush but it did make me think skinny a la Ulrika does often add to someones appearance. Though I know lots would disagree with me.

mamadoc · 13/08/2010 23:19

Ulrika Johnson.

Now there is a woman single handedly proving that you can indeed be too skinny!

mamadoc · 13/08/2010 23:20

Oh x-posts completely different opinion

MrsIndianaJones2 · 13/08/2010 23:20

Skinny = beautiful today, sadly. I've seen the most monstrous mingers called 'beautiful' when what people mean is 'thin/slim/great figure'. Roll on the next fifty years when things will flip back - they always do. Size 14 is one size down from the UK average, but it's amazing HOW many shops don't stock it. It always sells out in the sales...

ninah · 13/08/2010 23:20

well a tall big boned 14 is going to look slimmer than a short petite 14
and a 14 now is larger than a 14 say 20 years ago
it's all relative, isn't it?

mazzystartled · 13/08/2010 23:22

um, ulrika's about 10 years younger, i think
ergo looks 10 years older than she is

FallingWithStyle · 13/08/2010 23:24

Mamadoc Grin excellent xpost!

Just checked - Penny is 6 years older.

bratnav · 13/08/2010 23:25

YANBU. My most stunning friend is a 16/18, absolutely beautiful.

Also, check out Gigantaurs profile on MN, statuesque and beautiful and not a skinny girl.

FallingWithStyle · 13/08/2010 23:27

Oh no, actually 9 years between them!
Well, Penny looks very young.

mayorquimby · 13/08/2010 23:28

well no it doesn't equal pretty on it's own but it's certainly a factor for many people. Don't see how you can get angry about someones personal preferences really.

Skinny doesn't always equal pretty, however there are plenty of pretty, skinny women out there and equally many pretty, voluptous women.

I do think that slender/skinny women generally look better in clothes/outfits though which can add to overall attractiveness. Most clothes seem to hang a bit better without big DDs/generous tums/bums to get in the way!

And I say all that as a size 14/16.

mamatomany · 13/08/2010 23:37

I don't know, somebody has made skinny the ideal, it's not the media or teen magazines because we as women could change that fashion if need be, so it's either men who prefer thin women or it's other women themselves putting the pressure on.
I've just had a baby and am the biggest I've ever been, a 15, can't quite zip up a 14 yet and frankly I would hate to stay this size, nothing sits right, my thighs rub together, I still have a belly and my arms keep catching my tits when I type.

mamadoc · 13/08/2010 23:39

FWS I was watching vic and bob too and I guess thinking completely the opposite to you.

Just goes to shoe beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
dh agreed with me but he knows what's good for him Wink

expatinscotland · 13/08/2010 23:39

What MintChocAddict and forehead wrote.

Skinny can be as pretty as voluptuous.

It's all about the person in question.

I dislike all this size crap, and I'm a 16, because I had a tall, slender daughter and she's learning that people come in all shapes and sizes, that's not what makes a person attractive or unattractive.

mamatomany · 13/08/2010 23:40

Wasn't Marilyn Monroe a size 8 in todays money though ?
Women are getting bigger.

A 12 in the US is an 8 isn't it ? I'm sure I read she was in fact tiny but quite fat compared to British women of the day.

mamatomany · 13/08/2010 23:52

No it's the other way round an 8 in USA is a 12, I think
