To think that skinny doesn't equal pretty?

One of the prettiest most attractive women I know, is not super skinny, a size 14 she is. Lovely curves and a beautiful face.

A girl I know said about her today 'Yeah, she'd be lovely if she was skinny' Hmm

No, she's lovely the way she is. And whilst there are plenty of very slim women who are stunning, I dont think that you have to neccesarily be skinny.

Unfortunately it seems that in this society you have to be really thin to be considered beautiful and glamourous. I am a size 12, and spend so much time feeling worthless because I'm not as thin as I'd like to be, and that's not right is it. Im happy with every other aspect and that's enough for me!

So to all women who are not as small as maybe they want to be, you can still be just as beautiful, the most stunning woman I know is a size 14.

Nope. MM was a US 16 which is a UK 12 :o

bratnav · 14/08/2010 00:11

Its why I like to shop in GAP, I'm a 10 in there :)

thelunar66 · 14/08/2010 00:26

sizings are gone to hell these days.

I've got a size 14 PE skirt from my sixth form days (1978). it is TINY! it fits over one of my thighs now - SIZE 14!

yet in M&S and BHS a size 10 is a bit big now.

sizes have definitely changed and don't let anyone tell you otherwise... my 1978 PE skirt is the proof.

maryqueenofyachts · 14/08/2010 00:35

MM might have been a UK size 12 in the 1950s/60s, but not in today's inflated sizes, I bet. She had a petite frame.

ninah · 14/08/2010 00:38

yes I have some size 8 jeans from around 1980 and they are like pipecleaners
also I think proportions were a bit different, tiny waists, smaller cup bras?
having said that I can fit my mother's home made 50s dresses

kittya · 14/08/2010 00:42

Ulrika has had a facelift and everything!!

Heracles · 14/08/2010 00:47

Charlotte Church was hot till she lost all that weight. Get some meat back on you girl.

Dinkytinky · 14/08/2010 01:10

I agree with hectate! Some verrrry huge people end up looking the same because all the fat hides it.
Hoowwwever- I'm with you op, my friend is a plus size (16) model an she's the most stunning girl ever. But it's all subjective, I'm size 8 and 5ft and don't do badly (with dirty old wolf whistlers anway Grin )

blinks · 14/08/2010 01:30

after a certain age skinny can look haggard, hence the use of fillers etc.

Kaloki · 14/08/2010 01:31

Monroe, going by her measurements, was a modern UK size 10.

ragged · 14/08/2010 08:28

DH's only comment on skinny women is always: "No tits".
So... not inherently superiorly attractive, no.
I am having this conversation with DD who keeps pointing out proudly how skinny she is. I tell her to think in terms of wanting to be "fit" instead, which means having lots of energy to do things you want to in life. You don't get lots of energy if you're quite fat or you don't eat enough. I hope she gets the message :(.

PinkyMe · 14/08/2010 09:19

I always think that you've gone too far when your body starts looking like a young girl/boy 's.

Let face it Men are attracted to curves, it's us women who buy into this ridiculous aspiration to look like supermodels. I do think designers have a great amount of blame here. Why do they only make their clothes to suit these body types, greatly excluding all others?

nikki1978 · 14/08/2010 09:33

Some people like skinny, some like slim, some like chubby, some like fat. Everyone can look pretty but I think people look best when they are at a healthy weight (but I would include people at BMIs over 25 too as I don't agree that people are necessarily unhealthy at these weights). I am 5ft 3 and think I look my best at a size 12 which for my height is pretty curvy but I just don't like skinny (maybe because my mum has bordered on anorexia most of her life and at a size 6-8 I just don't think she looks healthy and happy). I am small boned so maybe in beauty magazine/media terms I would look better at a size 8 but I don't want to be that thin!

But I don't think it is fair to say skinny women are not attractive or that curvy is best. Everyone should find a weight where they are healthy and happy but that they don't need to starve/obessively exercise to be there. I would rather die than live on a diet of raw veg and miso soup just so I could be tiny. And as we get older a bit of weight definitely suits. Look at veiny Sarah Jessica Parker.....

TitsalinaBumSquash · 14/08/2010 09:37

YANBU - Women with curves can be just as pretty, like Nigella for instance i would fancy her if i was a guy she is gorgeous and has a great figure.

GeekOfTheWeek · 14/08/2010 09:38

Bigger can be beautiful.

Slimmer can be beautiful.

Everyone in between can be beatiful.

My bf is 5'3" and a size 16. She is the most attractive person i have ever seen. Truly, truly gorgeous and in our single days pulled many a fit bloke Grin

I am 5'7" and a 14 but look better as a 12 and look hideous as an 8.

sanielle · 14/08/2010 09:41

I have seen beautiful women of all sizes.. However as we age women who are very thin do tend to age a bit more, or at least look older in the face and hands. Don't you think?

stillbumbling · 14/08/2010 09:46

YANBU.

I'm as skinny as it gets, never been happy about it. No boobs, legs like a starving women from a developing country.

Women are programmed/encouraged to dislike themselves, whatever they have.

BUT, you don't have to diss skinnies to make bigger women feel good about themselves. And vice versa.

Wouldn't the world be amazing if we just encouraged women to be happy and healthy and to celebrate our differences.

majafa · 14/08/2010 09:47

I also have a pair of size 12 jeans from the 80's,
A year last Feb I was a modern day size 12, I could get in them, so sizes have definatley changed in the last 20 yrs or so.

PinkyMe · 14/08/2010 09:48

Sanielle I agree, particularly women who are very thin and also sun worship. Not a very good look at all.

McSnail · 14/08/2010 09:53

Actually, I think some women SUIT their skinniness and they'd look weird if they were rounder.
Saying that I know a woman whose face hints at amazing cheekbones and she WOULD be beautiful if she lost some feature-obscuring fat. And I also think clothes look/hang better if you're not really fat.

I'm not fat or skinny, by the way.

violethill · 14/08/2010 09:54

Ulrika Johnson and Penny Smith?! No contest.

Penny Smith looked about 10 times more attractive.
Ulrika is way to scrawny. I bet without all the tv make up she looks very haggard and drawn. Also you have to remember a lot of these super skinny women have only done it through surgery or other artificial means anyway. Remember Ulrika a couple of years ago with several spare tyres and knockers down to her knees? I think generally, if people stray too far from their natural build, they don't look right. Someone who is naturally skinny looks different from someone who has dieted like buggery or had liposuction. And equally, someone whose shape is naturally curvy looks different to someone who has a smaller build but has piled on some weight.

deaddei · 14/08/2010 09:57

I am skinny (but not pretty) Sad

daftpunk · 14/08/2010 10:02

My dh said the only woman he'd leave me for is nigella, he loves "curvy" women...... Just as well as I'm 5.6 and 11 stone.....36D..... gotta lay off the Ben and jerry's....

If you're pretty you're pretty, but you look "prettier" skinny..... Imo

superv1xen · 14/08/2010 10:06

Its strange isnt it how most women seem to aspire to be really skinny, yet men generally prefer curvier women!

I do think clothes hang better if you are slim though.

I am only 5ft 2 and sadly I look a bit plump if I go above a size 8 :( so at the moment I am a small size 8 but I have to work at it!

ShrimpOnTheBarbie · 14/08/2010 10:14

One of my closest friends is about a 16/18 and one of the prettiest people I know in real life.
I, however, looked shocking in a 14 after my babies were born. I am now back to my 'fighting' size 10. The shops tell me I'm an 8, however. I know I'm not an 8 - not a 'real' 8, anyway because my face stops looking 'pretty' and goes scrawny if I'm under a 10 - and that hasn't happened - and I also lose my boobs. I do have a teeny frame (child sized hands for eg), even though I'm 5.7.
